The stranger plot hole * spoiler alert *

Have just watched The Stranger and found it completely addictive. Loved it. But one things riles me. While I realise there are many plot holes including how so many people have so many dark secrets in such a small town, that is fine, it works for the sake of the plot. What I find hard to square is the Corinne lied so convincingly about her pregnancy for so long, bearing in mind she is a nice person, good mum, loving wife etc. To do something like that day in day out to your family you’d have to be psychologically disturbed surely. What do you think?

Did she have a fake belly? I know she had a fake pregnancy stick, but don't see how she could pretend to lose the baby if she appeared to be showing? That would have meant hospital obviously.

I never really got why Dennis Pennis killed Jennifer Saunders. Why didn’t he go after her daughter instead?
Any why did the police spend ages on the case of the boy in the coma, expecting misconduct, when he actually fell down a slope by accident. Surely they would have ways and means of telling the difference?
Still a good show though. His books are amazing, much more detailed and gripping but do also have some implausibilities. They are mainly set in New Jersey so not sure why the tv show has given them a completely different feel.

I’ve forgotten if the blackmailers went after the Sugar Daddy as well?

diddl · 26/02/2020 09:01

" Why didn’t he go after her daughter instead? "

Because the daughter wasn't being blackmailed, so didn't know who they were.

He was trying to find them because (I think) that they were also blackmailing one of her "sugar daddies"?

Callimanco · 26/02/2020 09:17

Dennis Penni's killed Jennifer Saunders because he was being paid by the sugar daddy to find out who the blackmailers were and stop them. He needed the money to pay for specialists to assess his daughter who had a mystery illness, later revealed to be that her mum was feeding her rat poison.

The dad and the detective framed Dennis for killing Tripp and, presumably, Corinne?? Thereby leaving said daughter in the clutches of evil Mum which didn't seem to worry them but then I don't recall who knew and if said Mum was ever reported to the police.

What was the point of the young black woman who constantly faked pregnancies and why did her husband hit the Dad when he opened the door to him?

I also found it gripping at the time but the ending left us sat going "huh"?

Michaelbaubles · 26/02/2020 09:18

The sugar daddy was the ethical app guy with the pregnant wife. Katz was investing and needed to make sure the story didn’t get out because it would have meant them losing their investment, so he was trying to take care of the problem of the app guy being blackmailed. I don’t know how that led him to Heidi though...

spiderlight · 26/02/2020 11:35

It wasn't the alpaca that was missing the tooth, it was the person who'd bitten it. This was how they eventually identified that it was Tripp's son who'd killed the alpaca.

I thought the ending was very disappointing as well. I was waiting for some fabulous dark twisty reveal but it was just a bit meh, really.

LittleSweet · 26/02/2020 11:59

It just didn't seem credible that an intelligent, independent, professional woman, without mental illness or personality disorder would pretend to be pregnant to keep her man. She just didn't seem manipulative or psychopathic enough to then fake a late miscarriage. She would surely have had a hospital stay.

RapidRainbow · 26/02/2020 22:00

@Callimanco I think I can clear some things up, I've given this lots of thought Grin

Dennis Penni's killed Jennifer Saunders because he was being paid by the sugar daddy to find out who the blackmailers were and stop them. He needed the money to pay for specialists to assess his daughter who had a mystery illness, later revealed to be that her mum was feeding her rat poison
Yes

The dad and the detective framed Dennis for killing Tripp and, presumably, Corinne?? Thereby leaving said daughter in the clutches of evil Mum which didn't seem to worry them but then I don't recall who knew and if said Mum was ever reported to the police. The police were shown in the background with IIRC the teenagers saying the police know and she will be safe now, or something to that effect.

What was the point of the young black woman who constantly faked pregnancies and why did her husband hit the Dad when he opened the door to him? When her husband visited their house, he hit him and told him to stay away from his family. When he later met up with pregnancy faker, he asked what that was all about and she shrugged it off as "she didn't think he was good to me and that I should leave him". So not half as dark as was implied!

Another "huh?!" I will add is why did Dennis Pennis shoot Heidi in the cafe? She was cooperating. He wasn't the implied crazed killer we were led to believe from that as later when he had the cop and wife in his house he didn't shoot at them when he had chance!

Yes completely agree that the was not "more to this" faked pregnancy.

I was also expecting something that connected everything together with a twist and was dissapointed by the endings. Highly watchable just finished badly!

MyOtherProfile · 29/02/2020 23:55

The more to this but was because she thought the neighbour had told Adam about the pregnancy to warn her that he could screw things up for her if she didn't keep her mouth shut about him nicking the money.

Can't remember how he knew about the fake pregnancy though.

Just watched 'Safe' and that was a bit better

I think some of the issue is that the books (I think) were set in the States, with American characters, and some of the things that made sense there, don't over here. The gated communities, the lavish parties, some of the names, some of the cultural background.
