Just caught up then realised the thread was full.

Sister Monica joan’s flowers.

Cried like a seal.

My garden didn’t bloom and for me the sunshine failed. My buds were perfect but not for here.

And the hairy bud who grew and blossomed in my care soaked up the love.

Missing the three of you more than you know. X

Just caught up on the last couple of episodes.
My school had a smoking staff room and a non smoking staff room (although I think it was dying out)- late nineties, early 2000s.

I think the council were a bit short sighted over Nonnatus House... They would have to pay more for full time nurses than Nuns!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 25/02/2020 07:37

The hospital I trained at had a smoking room for staff up until 2003 at least!!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 25/02/2020 07:53

I think that in the 21st Century there would be lots of help and support for doctors with addiction issues. However, not sure that would have been the case in 1965. Also, there is a difference between having an addiction (self-funded) and stealing hospital/clinic supplies to support it!

Is it my imagination or did this series seem shorter than usual?

Re smoking inside, I can recall that the school staffroom was just a dense fug of smoke if ever one had to go to knock on the door. If you ever travelled on a very busy train, the only place you would likely find a seat would be in the smoking carriage.

I have just been watching back episodes of Silent Witness (the Sam Ryan early years) and there's lots of indoor smoking to be seen there (as well as stars in the making - Russell Tovey and Benedict Cumberbatch to name but two!).

I’m going to say this again - I think they should go backwards with future programmes and cover the 20s and 30s with young Sisters Evangeline, Monica Joan and Julienne. Much more interesting and no Dr Turnip-gurner-Turner.

I couldn’t see the point of the druggie doctors plot line at all. It didn’t bring anything to the program

I can only think that it was put in so that we were more appreciative of Dr Turner's selfless commitment, fabulous acting, saintly doctorhood and general omnipotence without the need to resort to raiding the drugs cupboard.

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 25/02/2020 12:40

Dr Mcaddiction went from the odd pill, to regular pills, to intravenous overdose in 3 weeks.

Three weeks for us but longer in CTM time, given Sr MJ's garden took place in August and someone said in Sunday'e ep that it was November.

5foot5 · 25/02/2020 13:52

I used to have a cat that liked Acker Bilk.

Pebble21uk · 25/02/2020 14:43

When I was at primary school in the 70s I had a headmaster who was obsessed with Acker Bilk. He used to play us an LP of 'Strangers On The Shore' every week in assembly!

Izzy24 · 25/02/2020 15:17

Didn’t Dr Turner have early lung cancer several series ago?

FredaFrogspawn · 25/02/2020 15:30

I don’t remember that!

MyOtherProfile · 25/02/2020 16:35

Yes there was definitely a scare and he wasn't aware of the smoking risk.

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 25/02/2020 16:37

Defeated lung cancer without any treatment. That man is a God, I tell you.

Saucery · 25/02/2020 16:37

There was an ITV drama on a few years ago where the GP had lung cancer too - Home Fires?

Juliette20 · 25/02/2020 16:40

My father in law died when the cleaner came into the room and my husband and brother in law went out for a cup of tea

My dad died while we were having breakfast at home, we'd been there the night before. I think he was out of it by then on morphine anyway and it didn't make a difference either way. One of the care assistants read to him while he passed Sad. They were so lovely.

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 25/02/2020 17:00

It looked as though it was setting us up for a 'Dr SuperTurner has lung cancer' storyline a few years back, with him shown chain smoking at every conceivable opportunity, but then Timothy sat him and Sheila down and begged them to give up smoking as the health concerns were beginning to be known/suspected, and they did

Elderflower14 · 25/02/2020 17:30

When my DP was in the hospice at the end I had planned to spend the night and sleep in the chair next to him... As he didn't seem too bad I went home... The nurses rang me at 3am to say he'd died... 😔 😔 😔
DPs son in law collected my Mum and I and we all went to meet with his children to say goodbye... I regret so much not being there... The hospice staff were amazing.....

I thought that about the fireworks.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/02/2020 18:16

The kids would have had their own bangers, throwing them around the street.

FredaFrogspawn · 25/02/2020 18:43

I remember 1960s fireworks. They weren’t too bad. Catherine wheels, rockets and sparklers.

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 25/02/2020 18:55

Those were the days - Catherine Wheels which would fly off mid spin.

Flowers to the posters who’ve had losses. My beloved fil died from cancer - horrid way to go.
