What the heck did I just watch? And more significantly, I am really confused as to where and when that was supposed to be? Is that what Americans think we are like? Or did I miss the point.

Anyone seen it?

I didn't get it at all. Using sex to shock doesn't impress me though.

Fredy45 · 18/01/2020 20:37

Awwwww I love this! Just about to start watching season 2

I sort of had to suspend my disbelief in s1 because of the us high school in wales with no welsh people and amazing houses thing but it's so sweet.

Gillian Anderson is a GODESS

Egghead68 · 18/01/2020 21:02

The school and houses seem American, everyone has an English accent and it is supposed to be set in Wales! WTF? Gillian Anderson is very funny though.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 18/01/2020 21:04

Its an American high school idea but English production. Kind of set in the 80s with the fashions but the technology of now - I love it and thank you for reminding me that its on again!

stormsurfer · 18/01/2020 21:27

I love it too! The characters are so sweet and vulnerable underneath the whole in your face sex stuff. And it is so funny.

Apparently the 80s clothes, the music choices and American high school style are supposed to be an homage to the John Hughes teen movies of the 80s - like Breakfast Club etc.

Helloitsmemargaret · 18/01/2020 21:33

Agree it is brilliant TV, deals with some really important issues (homophobia, consent, female pleasure, identify etc) in a really considered way.

The Amy story for example about 'performance sex' in the context of modern teenage girls is great.

And Gillian Anderson is indeed a goddess.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 18/01/2020 21:36

I’m watching season 2 now.

It completely confuddles my brain. American styling, set in U.K. 70s/80s/90s fashion/cars/decor but modern technology. Confused

But I’m finding it hilarious! Some really great writing.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 18/01/2020 21:37

Oh I love that!!

stormsurfer · 18/01/2020 21:45

I agree @Helloitsmemargaret - it deals with so many issues with consideration and is not preaching or judgemental.

cloud1183 · 18/01/2020 21:57

I just finished the second season and thought it was absolutely fantastic. I think it’s the only tv show where I love and am invested in all the characters. Not happy with the final scene though 😱 Can’t wait for season 3

PerspicaciaTick · 18/01/2020 22:02

I have just binged S1&2. I really enjoyed it, but more for Lily, Aimee and Viv than the main characters.
I loved the bonkers UK/US mash up, especially the very peculiar geography.
And yes, Gillian Anderson is a goddess, although slightly morphing into Miranda's mum at the start of S2.

Someonesayroadtrip · 18/01/2020 23:22

Haha. Well least I didn't watch it alone. I missed it was supposed to be set In Wales, even more hilarious. So I take it all this confusion is deliberate. It just distracts me from the story line, I'm clearly not very cultured.

Great for teens too, almost wholesome

chumbawum · 18/01/2020 23:41

The houses are at Symonds Yat near Ross on Wye and the school is Newport.

It's not actually set in Wales just generic and it's meant to be ambiguous and sort of American yet British.

I love love love it.

splishandsplash · 19/01/2020 02:28

They wanted to make it as timeless and as geographically inconspicuous as possible. It was more to focus on the subjects they discuss than the location or timings. It's based in the UK but with the set up of the school it could be American, they did this so the teens in both the UK and America can watch and benefit from the subjects they are discussing.
(It was discussed in an interview with the creators after S1)

Egghead68 · 19/01/2020 05:34

I can see that they wanted it to appeal to the US market but I think they should have just set it in the US as all the “mismatches” are a bit distracting and jarring imo. The quasi 80s(?) setting is a bit copycat of “Stranger Things” and again I don’t think they would have lost anything by just setting it now. Why overcomplicate things? Enjoyable storylines though.

Ritascornershop · 19/01/2020 05:39

I was entranced by the wallpaper in Gillian Anderson’s house, just gorgeous.

Fredy45 · 19/01/2020 17:31

I got up to ep 4 but fell asleep half way through so need to rewatch.

Lovely Eric and lovely Adam. Am warming to Jackson too.

The episode with Aimee and the bus was well done I thought and her reactions seemed pretty realistic (minimising it but feeling distraught at the same time).

I like Otis and Orla together but it doesn't bode well does it :(

Fredy45 · 19/01/2020 17:31

Oh and Gillian Anderson's wardrobe. That's what I want to look like (I don't fyi)

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 19/01/2020 17:49

Eric is fantastic. I love him!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/01/2020 17:54

It's not American.

It's fab, we binged the second series and loved it as much as the first.

It was filmed that really hot summer,it would've been very different without all the gorgeous sunny days.

I think it covers really good topics, there's a reason all the teens are watching it.

Looks like there will be a season 3 too.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/01/2020 18:02

I spent ages trying to work out who Eric reminded me of and realised it's Nadia from Bake Off!

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 19/01/2020 21:38

I love it.

Egghead68 · 19/01/2020 22:06

I think the gay best friend is like the one on the Incredible Kimmy Schmidt
