What the heck did I just watch? And more significantly, I am really confused as to where and when that was supposed to be? Is that what Americans think we are like? Or did I miss the point.

OP posts:
Fredy45 · 20/01/2020 08:18

Up to the last episode now.

Lovely Adam and the dog and lovely Eric and also lovely Eric's mum. So right with the sparkle.

I LOVED ep 7 with Otis and Ruby and the girls at the bus stop. Have really liked the Aimee storyline.

Not so keen on Issac as a character. Seems too pantomime

Will finish the last one tonight

Egghead68 · 20/01/2020 09:34

It's really growing on me.

NancyDrewCrew · 21/01/2020 10:36

Loved it. Just binge watched. The actor playing Adam, Connor Swindells, is very good. Him and Alistair Petrie, who plays his father, have very similar body language and facial expression at times. Very cleverly done/great direction.
The actor playing Adam is going out with the actress playing Aimee (also called Aimee) in real life. Aww, bless.

Mooserp · 21/01/2020 11:26

I really enjoy it - just wish they didn't release the whole lot in one go, as I couldn't help myself and have watched them all already.

The locations and almost permanent sunshine do make it very nice to watch.

There did seem to be excessive amounts of wanking in this series!

Boglins · 21/01/2020 11:38

I love the friendship between Otis and Eric, they are both so accepting of each other and not afraid to show affection or emotion. The scene on the hotel steps in S2 was very sweet.

I love the style of it now but it was puzzling at first, I want all of Gillian Anderson's wardrobe, although I'd need the figure to match!

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 21/01/2020 12:09

They have a really lovely friendship.

I say the same about Gillian Anderson’s wardrobe. I keep thinking “ooh that’s gorgeous. But I’d need to grow a foot upwards and lose a foot widthways” Grin

Mooserp · 21/01/2020 12:59

I don't think she's very tall.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 21/01/2020 13:02

But I’m very small Grin she must have a tiny frame.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/01/2020 18:09

She's 5ft2 according to Google.

MrsEsss · 21/01/2020 20:12

I've really enjoyed this. I just wish there were more episodes! I love the diversity in the programme and that it's just normal and doesn't need to be mentioned. I like all the characters which is really unusual for me. And, yes, I love the friendship between Eric and Otis.

It took me a while to get into the styling of it in the first series but I love it now.

MrsEsss · 21/01/2020 21:55

I can't help but smile when I'm watching Eric. He has the kindest fact and the most beautiful smile.

CodenameVillanelle · 21/01/2020 22:00

Eric is nothing like Titus andromedon they are just both gay and black Hmm
I absolutely loved this show...there were moments that I didn't like but things like Lily's ridiculous porno Shakespeare and the social workers (I am one, inaccurate portrayals of social work on TV is my bugbear) but on the whole it was great. Even better than series 1. I think the timeless/placeless theme works really well.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 21/01/2020 22:12

Who were the social workers? I can’t remember.

NancyDrewCrew · 21/01/2020 22:41

Titus = self-centred, overconfident, diva/drama llama, prone to melodrama but can also be compassionate and generous
Came out late, was closeted
Eric = openly gay, came out at 13, builds confidence in series 1, good friend but not the best friend who is black and gay trope (neither Titus or Eric are as they have their own storylines and own agency) funny, vulnerable, religious, brave

Both have a great laugh/smile, Titus is probably crueller in his sass, Eric is direct too, both have a sense of style. Titus sings (Burgess deserved emmy for the Lemonading episode dammit) Eric plays the French horn. Both had love stories (Mikey, Adam/Rahim).

Both actors deserve plaudits.

NancyDrewCrew · 21/01/2020 22:46

So no, I don't think they are tropes as they are completed rounded characters and I don't think they are that similar egghead but they do have style and sass in common.

The social workers were the ones on the phone at the caravan site who came foe Els at the end wire. They were the child snatcher stereotype in the last episode only.

NancyDrewCrew · 21/01/2020 22:49

Oh and Ncuti Gatwa is... 27.
Nothing new - many actors have to play young, but for him to do 10 years younger so well and credibly: chapeau Smile

MrsEsss · 21/01/2020 23:12

Wow, I never would have guessed he was 27. Obviously all of the actors are older than the 16 year olds they are portraying, but I think they all do it very plausibly.

NancyDrewCrew · 22/01/2020 00:30

Yep. He refers to Asa as little bro - Asa (Otis) is 22 irl.
They all do a grand job.
Asa Butterfield reminds me of Craig Roberts and Skyler Gisondo (similar geeky virginal roles in Red Oaks and Santa Clarita).
The cast are all protected with the sex scenes too - very much talked through, choreographed almost, with workshops and coordinator on set with them. They might be in their 20s but still nice to hear and that the scriptwriters are female.

MrsEsss · 22/01/2020 06:41

I'm also surprised that the show has an 18 rating. I know there's a lot of sex (obviously!) but it's not gratuitous, it's completely within the context of the story line and you don't actually much. There's no sexual violence or bad language and there are some really positive messages and excellent role models. I know ratings don't physically stop people under the recommended age from watching but I find it bizarre. I'd put it at a 15 probably.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 22/01/2020 09:57

that the scriptwriters are female.

I think that really shines through. You can tell women were heavily involved in this production. There is no feeling of it being written for the male gaze. It’s lovely.

Mooserp · 22/01/2020 13:52

Eric is great and Ncuti seems equally lovely

Morgan12 · 22/01/2020 14:00

Where the hell is Eric's dad?

sakura06 · 22/01/2020 20:38

Absolutely love it. Binge watched Season 2 over 4 nights. Love the actors, love the characters, love the setting, love Gillian Anderson's wardrobe 😍

NancyDrewCrew · 22/01/2020 21:24

Good question morgan His role is recurring - but not in this series at all - maybe Remi was the focus and Eric's dad will be back series 3 - he was last seen arguing with Eric (?) cannot remember full details. The actor maybe wasn't available when filming? (DeObia was a henchman cameo in Jumanji 2 and has been filming recently with Guy Ritchie)

TheGriffle · 22/01/2020 21:56

I love love love it. Loved series 1 and thought the second was even better. Eric and Otis’ relationship is wonderful to watch and Jakob is just wonderful!
