Did anyone catch Agatha referring to a detective she knows in London who located Mina? Now I wonder who that might be...
Yes. There was a Sherlock pipe in one of the boxes he opened as well.

CaveMum · 01/01/2020 23:30

Loved the Sherlock reference and apparently there was a Doctor Who nod as well but I missed it.

xsquared · 01/01/2020 23:30

I have several editions of the book, including this beautifully illustrated one by Yvonne Gilbert, who also illustrated the "Relax" sleeve for Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

I have seen the BBC 1977 adaptation with Louis Jourdan and the film one by Francis Ford Copolla, which follow the book closely, the former more so than the latter.

When Jonathan first appeared on screen, I thought it was Renfield. I wonder whether we will meet the other characters from the book or whether they will have been replaced somehow?

OccasionalKite · 01/01/2020 23:31

Cooroo - "But yes - Mina's wig is dire. Intentionally?"

I googled Hammer horror heroines, for images.

Yes, I think the wig is intentional!

Enjoyed this, and ironic/homage references especially.

Still glad I'm not alone in the house, though!

Worst bit - the fly in the eye, shudder, aarrgh.

xsquared oh that looks amazing!

Deadringer · 02/01/2020 00:17

It's mad but I am enjoying it all the same.

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/01/2020 00:31

For some reason Dracula reminds me a bit of David Walliams Confused

StarbucksSmarterSister · 02/01/2020 01:10

BoreofWhabylon

OMG yes! He does!

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/01/2020 01:12

I found it quite disturbing!

AriadneAufNaxos · 02/01/2020 01:31

Didn’t need to see Dracula naked though was quite disappointing how weedy he looked haha?

Weedy? He wasn't weedy. Far from it.

madeyemoodysmum · 02/01/2020 08:44

I'm enjoying it but I wish the story was a bit more true.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 02/01/2020 08:55

It's Dracula..... how true can it be?

It's true in the sense that it really plays up the ridiculous camp gothic aesthetic of the book.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2020 09:05

I do find things with constant nod nod wink wink references to other texts a bit draining (scuse pun) after a while. It's a bit of a boys' club of Gatiss and Moffatt fans sometimes. On its own merit it was silly , didn't really have anything fresh to say, but passed the time well enough. Don't think it deserved the Guardian's 5 * review!

That said, Dracula almost only exists as a text in the imagination/myth, so far have writers over the years moved from the original.

Pinkbonbon · 02/01/2020 09:15

Finding the vanhelsing character a bit irritating. Plus it feels like one if those 'let's make her a woman character so we can say - look at us we're so inclusive'. That and the whole gay insinuation about the relationship with Dracula and what's his name.

I'll attempt a second episode though.

Yes! DH and I both laughed out loud at that!

woodhill · 02/01/2020 09:22

Really enjoyed this even though it was a bit hammy

IcedPurple · 02/01/2020 09:36

Don't think it deserved the Guardian's 5 review!*

I don't think I can remember the last time when a 'prestige' BBC production didn't get a 5 star review in The Guardian.

Agree it wasn't that good. Pace was quite slow at times and the CGI was quite intrusive. 4 star tops in my book, but then I don't write for The Guardian!

Chienloup · 02/01/2020 11:18

I loved the campness of it. It was ridiculously silly, in a good way. DH found it too gory and went to bed-he doesn't do well with thrillers.

iklboo · 02/01/2020 11:22

Could also have been Madame Vastra Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 02/01/2020 11:38

The 90s Coppola version is still the most faithful to the book, as far as I know. It's also the only time I've found Gary Oldman attractive, except maybe for his turn in Harry Potter!

CodenameVillanelle · 02/01/2020 11:51

I absolutely loved it. Sister Agatha was brilliant, Mina had more personality than Winona Ryder's version, Jonathan is the right mix of moral and wet, and Dracula is excellent. I love watching new adaptations of classics where the female characters are given actual personalities, rather than cyphers for male fantasies. We could do without Lucy seducing all the old men with her sexy vampire ways.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2020 11:53

Very true iced
