I really enjoyed it. I’ll be interested to see if they’ve dispensed with Lucy Westenra altogether.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 02/01/2020 14:23

Am a bit wtf over the accusation that Dracula is weedy... he's in fabulous shape for a man of 52 (or 400).

I would welcome a deviation from the whole Lucy storyline. I don't like the character or the dodgy science of all those blokes giving her blood transfusions. Yes, I do know they didn't know about blood group compatibility back when it was written but I feel like a modern adaptation has to deal with it in a way that doesn't look completely ridiculous. Better to have a different narrative I think.

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 14:29

I think Claes is probably v fit and strong. Maybe the darkness etc makes it appear different on different screens.

I'm going to read the book.....

the actress playing Agatha seems so familiar but looked on IMDB and haven't seen her before.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 02/01/2020 14:37

It’s a brilliant hammer horror ham up.

nitgel · 02/01/2020 14:40

Seemed to be a bit of a mess to me. Silly and not at all frightening.

Disillusioneddaisy · 02/01/2020 14:44

I'm torn! Parts were really good, other bits seemed quite silly. Will give it another go tonight. Didn't realise it was written by Mark Gatiss, I love the LOG and inside number 9.

Agree that sister Agatha is legend. Shame about soppy Mina 😂

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 14:48

I've never seen a Hammer Horror. Parents said they were really scary but others have told me it's all just a piss take.

CodenameVillanelle · 02/01/2020 14:50

Dolly Wells who plays Agatha is a comedian. She has done some sketch comedy with Noel fielding and she did a sitcom called Doll and Em with Emily Mortimer

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 15:12

Villanelle ah, thank you! I think I've seen her on a panel before.

xsquared · 02/01/2020 15:18

I hope we can see a stronger Mina. She's meant to be the brains of the company when they go on the quest to destroy Dracula and has an active role, so I hope they won't just make her into a damsel in distress.

AriadneAufNaxos · 02/01/2020 15:58

Don't think it deserved the Guardian's 5review!

Yes it did ! The Times gave it 5 stars too. The reviews have been universally favourable.

AriadneAufNaxos · 02/01/2020 16:00

I hope they won't just make her into a damsel in distress

I didn't get any sense from last night's episode that she will be a damsel in distress.

Patsypie · 02/01/2020 16:02

It was brilliantly shit! Barker reminded me of the evil twin on Doctors though! Drac was pretty hot!

Powerplant · 02/01/2020 16:06

Love it but only if OH is with me I’m a real wimp!

SuePerb · 02/01/2020 16:08

I thought it was ridiculous but really enjoyed it. Dracula at the gate was a nice touch I thought (!) and Agatha was fab.

(the wig?! and soppy Mina?!).

It's one of my favourite books although this bears little resemblance to it .

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 02/01/2020 16:08

I really really wanted to like this but, aft r my initial post here, I switched it off when he was naked at the gates of the nunnery.

IcedPurple · 02/01/2020 16:13

I switched it off when he was naked at the gates of the nunnery.

What?!?

That was the best bit!

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2020 16:19

The reviews have been universally favourable. well, as with A Christmas Carol not on here and also not on Twitter, where things are rather less Gatiss worshipping and rather more mixed!

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 02/01/2020 16:22

That was the best bit!

😂😂 Not right at the start of the naked bit....

IcedPurple · 02/01/2020 16:24

I think TV reviewers in major newspapers tend to come from the same sort of right-on Oxbridge set that BBC execs come from, and their opinions aren't neccessarily representative of the general viewing public. Plus, they might be reluctant to give a bad review when they know they'll be meeting up with Crispin and Jocasta at that new artisan Peruvian quinoa place in Knightsbridge next week.

IcedPurple · 02/01/2020 16:25

Not right at the start of the naked bit....

True, but the best things come to she who perseveres....

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 02/01/2020 16:31

😂😂

There is always iPlayer.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2020 16:32

iced Grin

xsquared · 02/01/2020 17:10

No, but she has been called soppy further upthread and again after my post.

stumbledin · 02/01/2020 17:34

Had i know it was written by Mark Gatiss I wouldn't have bothered with the first 15 minutes. Its that same old supposedly smart but actually very male adolescent attitude that made Sherlock such a really bad programme.

But am not surprised both the Guardian and the Times gave it a high rating. This is how these programmes get made. All the lads having a good laugh and we are supposed to join in.

Xmas tv has been total shite this year.

(Came on the thread to see if I should go back to it and again there is nothing really interesting to watch. I might watch that slow tv programme from C5. An hour of scenery in Scotland filmed from a train cant be anymore boring!! Grin )
