Couldn't see a thread, anyone watching?

BBC2 now, based on a true story.

Watching now missed the first 5 mins, have I missed anything?

DarkDarkNight · 16/12/2019 21:25

I’m watching the ITV thing and have this recording. Is it worth watching?

Cluelessbeetroot · 16/12/2019 21:27

So far it’s so very sad

covetingthepreciousthings · 16/12/2019 21:30

I don't know if I'm going to be able to watch the whole thing tbh, it's very sad.

I'm about 10/15 minutes behind. It's so sad already, poor lad not wanted by his mother Sad

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 16/12/2019 21:49

Is the mother supposed to be a bit slow or something? She's just sitting there smiling while everything kicks off around her. I also missed the first five minutes so unsure if more background was given then.

Shaun Dingwall is really frightening with his little ponytail! The kid is great too.

SouthWestmom · 16/12/2019 21:50

Some of it is annoying, like the terminology. And asking him in front of the parents if he was ok.

Some stereotypical appearances which is irritating

The rest is really good am enjoying it

runwithme · 16/12/2019 21:51

It is so hard to watch. Those poor kids.

Cluelessbeetroot · 16/12/2019 21:51

This is based on a true story, including the axe assault on the older brother by the stepdad. How on earth was he allowed to go back to their home ??

covetingthepreciousthings · 16/12/2019 22:03

I vaguely remember reading about the case when it was in the news, but will have to re-read.

I thought the same about the mother, something not right there.

@EoinMcLovesCakeJumper Most women whose children end up in care or under SS have learning difficulties/low IQ - a really startling 85 per cent.

It's based on the Jerome Ellis case, who was 14 when he chopped his stepdad's head off and got 6 years.

covetingthepreciousthings · 16/12/2019 22:20

I wonder whether he will be eligible to receive a new identity when he's released? (Like James Bulgers killers did)

It looks like he'll be due to be released next year judging by the dates of the case.

OP posts:
Cluelessbeetroot · 16/12/2019 22:21

Yes, googled the case and looks like he has been given a new identity.

DancingintheSpoonlight · 16/12/2019 22:39

Can someone please clarify what his mum said to him before walking away after the verdict? I know she said she lost her babies but didn't catch the last bit?

Thought it was really well done but obviously heart breaking.

Cluelessbeetroot · 16/12/2019 22:42

I think Ray said “I did it to protect you and Nathan” and his mum said something like “it doesn’t matter if we’re not all together anymore”, I might be completely wrong though

covetingthepreciousthings · 16/12/2019 22:42

I know she said she lost her babies but didn't catch the last bit?

"It's not much good. If we're not altogether Ray"
I think.

covetingthepreciousthings · 16/12/2019 22:43

I wonder how close this is to the real story, I also wonder how the brothers feel about this coming out & whether they were consulted at all?

OP posts:
fridgegrazer · 16/12/2019 22:43

What a thing to say to him - and then she just walked off!!

DancingintheSpoonlight · 16/12/2019 22:44

Thank you guys!

fridgegrazer · 16/12/2019 22:46

From what I just read the details of the killing seem the same as well as the verdicts - and the stepfather's trial for the axe attack on the older son.

covetingthepreciousthings · 16/12/2019 22:46

Just been looking at the cast list on IMDB as I thought his solicitor looked familiar, he is Niko Pilastri in Killing Eve!! Totally didn't recognise him.

Blimey that was some powerful TV. I watched it feeling very privileged that neither my life nor that of my stepchildren was ever as chaotic as Ray and Nathan’s upbringing.

TooMuchBloodyChoice · 16/12/2019 22:50

I didn’t realise it was a true story. It’s awful that he was failed by his parents and that it lead to this situation. However from what I have seen of YOI is that they do try and help the children in their care by providing a range of support and activities.

I hope Jerome has had intensive therapy and is able to have a happier adult life.

ineedaholidaynow · 16/12/2019 22:53

How could the stepfather have been allowed back in a house with children in it?

covetingthepreciousthings · 16/12/2019 22:53

That was a really powerful drama, but I really feel like I need to just spend the next half an hour or so watching something jolly before I go to bed.

Even my DH managed to be compelled to watch it to, but he did just turn to me and say "well that was fucking sad".

What a sad story. I hope he does have a new identity when he's released.
