Just watched the episode where the Duke and Duchess of Windsor are featured. So far they are the worst casting for me - they have aged far more Than anyone else?

paradyning · 26/11/2019 21:40

Oh I loved Derek Jacobi

AppleKatie · 26/11/2019 22:22

I want to love it. I’m trying to love it. But there’s something not quite right.

Nanalisa60 · 26/11/2019 22:31

Yes I have lost two afternoons this week!! Three episodes Monday afternoon three today!! Nothing better then a good old binge with a pot of tea and a packet of chocolate biscuits!!
I should feel guilty but I don’t!! Supposed to be getting house ready for putting up Christmas decks this weekend!!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 30/11/2019 14:02

Loved the episode where Charles went to Wales.
I think the actor playing him was brilliantly cast.
Loved the young Anne. I hope we get to see more of her rather than as a supporting character.

I still don’t like OC’s portrayal of the Queen.
Bearing in mind no one knows what she is really like outside her close circle; I feel that OC is playing the Queen in a very hard manner.
Agree with pp that the portrayal of Charles is very sympathetic.

Crabonastick · 05/12/2019 11:43

I’m finding that season 3 is making me dislike the queen and really like Charles.

Episode 3- I didn’t even know that had even happened Sad

SlightlyBonkersQFA · 05/12/2019 18:30

Yes good casting except for OC i feel.

I

I dont think wallis and edward had aged too much. He was the queens fathers older brother after all

Doingtheboxerbeat · 08/12/2019 05:24

I have just binged on the Crown since last Friday nights accidental Gogglebox snippet of the Crowns take of the Aberfan disaster.
I have laughed and cried and been slightly turned on( by Prince Philip, played by both actors). The episode featuring his mother, Princess Alice, Charles and Wales, gave me serious feels. It also filled in gaps of my own knowledge I didn't really think about, such as why is the Queen mother a former queen and why isn't Prince Philip not a king etc.
Not a royalist by any means but also not a republican, I just feel more than slightly blessed not to be born into such a strict, oppressive regime and wonder WTF Kate and Megan et al were thinking.

bakingdemon · 19/12/2019 15:21

I liked this a lot less than the first two seasons. It just seemed like they'd buggered about with the timelines so much (obviously was reading about the real events on my phone while watching) and that really really annoyed me. And HBC is so distinct looking and sounding that I could never forget that it was her.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 20/12/2019 22:40

Just seen the episode with Charles in Wales. Loved the relationship with his tutor. I wonder how true the fractious relationship between him and his mother was. They way she is portrayed makes her seem really cold and unfeeling. Very sad.

pinkpillowpuffs · 21/12/2019 21:34

Just perusing this thread, although finished season 3 a while ago. I totally agree about the blue eyes thing re the queen. It seems a small thing but it isn't really. I keep wondering why the hell they didn't just give OC blue contact lenses?! It seems so obvious to me that you would do that, why would you not? Unless I'm missing something...

Butterfly005 · 23/12/2019 12:40

I read something about the eye colour - I think they forgot contact lenses when filming and then when they tried CGI it didn't look right. They decided in the end that it was better if it looked right even though factually wrong. Olivia Colman is pretty well-known, would probably look a bit strange if she had blue eyes!

paradyning · 23/12/2019 16:51

I think she tried the lenses and felt she couldn't 'act' or 'emote' or whatever these actors do through them.

Hels20 · 26/12/2019 09:05

I liked the series. Toby M grew on me and OC was ok. I like most things that HBC is in - and I thought she was good in this. Favourite episode was the Princess Alice one. Agree about Anne - she came across well. And I think the Writers portrayed Charles very sympathetically. Poor man - and being shuffled off to Wales to be tutored by a Republican who didn’t want to do the job.

But I found the choice of events - a bit odd. Abervan was very good but I can’t believe they jumped to 1976 (the year of Margaret’s separation) and didn’t even mention Anne’s marriage to Mark Philips...surely a bit strange.

Flamingnorahs · 27/12/2019 22:19

On season 3 episode 5 just now. I just cant take to OC which is a pity as I usually like her in everything else. I agree with pp, she just looks bloody miserable! I actually feel sad when I see Olivia Colemans name instead of Claire Foys on the intro! I'm far from a royalist but CF and Matt Smith's (who I though was brilliant) portrayal made me warm to the royals (a wee bit!) HBC is just being HBC I'm afraid. John Lithgow was absolutely amazing as Churchill. Also, does anyone agree that the scene when Margaret first goes to photography studio was sexy as hell??Blush

Flamingnorahs · 27/12/2019 22:21

I had actually put a blush face not a sad one after my sexy confession about Margaret and Tony..!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 30/12/2019 21:49

Slowly working my way through while on Christmas leave. I think for me OC just always looks cats bum mouth as the Queen. There's no warmth. She permanently looks pissed off at her lot. It's a shame as even if QE hates the role, she seems very gracious and warm with it. OC doesn't portray that. Zero chemistry with her and TM too.

MS had the physical presence of PP but TM does the voice so much better.

HBC is just perfection as PM. Absoloutley spot on casting there for me regardless of how old she looks.

Mockers2020Vision · 01/01/2020 13:04

Never knew before about Andrew Parker-Bowles and Anne. Looking forward to Charles and Sarah Spencer, then Randy Andy and a cast of thousands, etc.

Wendyasbury · 04/01/2020 23:24

Just binged this whole thing this last week or so. Wow fantastic. Very much enjoyed it. The biggest things that stood out for me was that the children of the queen and Philip were raised by staff, completely by the looks of it. I kept waiting to see them with their parents but nope. And every time they would head off on a trip I was waiting to see the children go with them but no. They were gone for months! And one episode where the queen gives birth ( I think to the 3rd child) Margaret walks into the room and they start chatting, the new born is in a crib the other side of the room! I thought that scene was so sad. When you have just given birth you instinctively want the baby close to you. I feel very sad for their children and can't understand that lack of parental instinct .

I loved the original cast of Claire Foy and Matt Willis, have never seen either of them before. It made me warm to prince Philip a lot and Charles, when you see how they grew up. Fascinating stuff.
