I'm so looking forward to seeing this when it returns next Sunday!

My understanding is that Harry hated Eton and is on record as heaving publicly said so.

I read somewhere that Diana and Charles were advised he wasn't academic enough for Eton and to look elsewhere, somewhere more sporty, but then she died, and Eton said they'd have him on compassionate grounds to keep them together.

ManonBlackbeak · 23/11/2019 18:16

Apparently season 4 will be showing the tricky relationship between the Queen and Mrs Thatcher. Its no secret that they didn't really get a long is it?

ThatsMeInTheSpotlight · 23/11/2019 18:33

I've just finished it and feel a bit underwhelmed. I did enjoy the scenes between the Queen and Wilson. Princess Anne was fab, as was Charles. Obviously the main leads were great too.

One thing I thought was much better this series, was the portrayal of the Queen Mother. The slightly fussy, character of the first two seasons didn't seem to capture her at all. It wasn't the actress' fault, I think it was the writing. This season they captured her waspishness, uppity nature and slightly cynical/bitter edge which seems much more realistic.

Someone mentioned the tiaras and, call me shallow, but I did miss the focus on dressing/costumes/dresses this season. The Queen and Margaret wore some amazing fashion and the first two seasons let it sparkle more.

VanyaHargreeves · 23/11/2019 18:36

No Manon Queen loathed her

Think there was snobbery involved "grocers daughter" also Thatcher once used the Royal We in Parliament and it pissed the Queen right off apparently.

VanyaHargreeves · 23/11/2019 18:40

Oh and if you haven't heard Erin Doherty's REAL Voice rectify that error at once Shock

Loads of interviews on YouTube

ManonBlackbeak · 23/11/2019 18:50

Ive also heard that the Queen was appalled at the way Mrs T and her government treated the miners during the strike. Effectively starving them into submission.

ThatsMeInTheSpotlight · 23/11/2019 19:28

Vanya I've just watched an interview with Erin. I didn't realise her natural accent was sooo different from Anne's. She seems like so much fun Grin

Fairylea · 23/11/2019 19:32

Erin D is so good as Anne! One of the gems of the new season. Who knew her real voice was so different too?!

diddl · 23/11/2019 20:02

I've watched 3 so far & really enjoyed it.

I'm liking OC, HBC, TM & of course Jason Watkins.

Love that Martin Charteris was played by "Bertie Pelham" & is now played by "Michael Gregson"!

Gwenhwyfar · 23/11/2019 21:08

"two grown adults having a servant to "help " them put on a pair of pyjamas and a dressing gown ! No wonder they are out of touch with normal people."

It's well known they have servants for everything. There was even a story once that Charles had someone put toothpaste on his brush, but there came an explanation that this was only when he'd broken his arm!
In episode one Philip is sitting right by the telly, but a stupidly dressed servant has to switch it off for him.

BestIsWest · 23/11/2019 21:31

Just watched the Investiture episode. I’m just old enough to remember standing on the pavement waving to Charles as he sped past our primary school during the tour of Wales (I was 6).

We had a great fancy dress party in the village hall and races in the field later ( my dad won the father’s race) Looking back, I’m amazed he had any involvement because he was staunchly anti royal and refused to join in the street part for the jubilee.

I think the casting of Anne and Charles is excellent. Warming to Philip and once or twice I’ve thought OC looked remarkably like HM.

My favourite scenes are Wilson and his cabinet barely visible through clouds of smoke.

Hepzibar · 23/11/2019 21:40

I have been trying to pace myself but have just watched the final episode.

The final scene between OC and HBC was powerful. Think they came into their parts and portrayed their relationship exceptionally well.

Outstanding acting and portrayals of me have been:

Number one without a doubt - Jason Watkins Harold Wilson - 'The' part of the series (are you listening BAFTA ?)

Second - Lorraine Ashbourne's Barbara Castle - sublime.

OC eventually came into her own but it was always going to be a hard act to follow. OC gave HM maturity and confidence, but it took a while to warm to her more human touch.

Tobias Menzies as PP - fab

Love Pip Torrens brief return as Tommy Lascelles (the performance of the whole series IMO)

Finally I am loving Josh O'Connor's Charles (just wish he would stand up a bit instead of hunching).

I love PC and always have.

EleanorReally · 23/11/2019 21:52

I did very much enjoy series 1 and 2, from a historical point of view they were fascinating, history i knew very little of.
more recent history I know more of and it does seem more soapy.

funny life the royals lead though isnt it

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 24/11/2019 09:21

Re: the casting of unknown vs known actors. I think it must be harder to find a talented actor in their 40s / 50s who is still fairly unknown, in comparison to someone in their 20s.

I like OC in this, and HBC acts well, but does look at least a decade older than the 34 that PM was at the time. Charles is very well cast, I felt.

FLOrenze · 24/11/2019 09:34

Is anyone watching The House of Windsor series. This covers more or less the same period and is excellent.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/11/2019 09:42

Is that the Netflix series? Yes, was good. So was the recent Channel 4 series on the Queen's aunt and uncles.

RuffleCrow · 24/11/2019 09:43

I don't know about that @receptacle - theatres and agent books are full of unknowns of all ages. If there's one thing we don't have in the UK it's a shortage of talented actors.

diddl · 24/11/2019 09:47

" recent Channel 4 series on the Queen's aunt and uncles."

What was that called please?

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/11/2019 10:15

@diddl The Queen's Lost Family. Not that any of them were particularly lost!

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 24/11/2019 10:15

You may be right Ruffle. I don't dislike OC's portrayal, at any rate. Although I do think that she looks a little more dour than I'd expect.

HBC just isn't believable as the mother of young children, although I think she has acted Margaret's personality well (ie difficult, petulant etc).

Does anyone know how true episode 6 was? Did Charles go to his nationalist tutor's house for dinner?

diddl · 24/11/2019 10:24

Thank you, Queen

diddl · 24/11/2019 10:25

Goodness-just clicked on the link.

They are like Windsor clones!

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/11/2019 10:27

@ReceptacleForTheRespectable I don't know about that but apparently the part about him rewriting his speech was invented.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/11/2019 10:28

@diddl yes, Princess Anne and the Queen greatly resemble Princess Mary and Prince William has a look of the old Duke of Kent about him.

diddl · 24/11/2019 10:41

I haven't watched all of it yet, but struggling a bit to find out what is exaggerated & what is downright made up.

I don't want to believe that HM didn't shed a tear at Aberfan, although I agree that her sobbing uncontrollably also wouldn't have been good, so it was probably somewhere between the two!

I liked the exchange re that between "HM" & "Harold Wilson", but somehow doubt it happened!

Loved PM at the White House & the limericks, even though that was obviously tosh!

Was surprised that Tony AJ rushed straight off & Dof E the next day.

Ben Daniels is very good as AAJ, isn't he?
