MsLatte’s Daebak Cybercafé (kdrama addicts #10)

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here, but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads:

Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired.

In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

😱😱😱 Can you hotspot for a bit?

bettys · 27/11/2019 11:22

If all fails watch Giri/Haji on iPlayer for a vicarious hit

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 27/11/2019 11:39

I've unplugged and plugged everything and it's still not working so im watching Viki on my phone now. Of all the days to break it would be the day I'm stuck in the house 😂

helloswellow · 27/11/2019 11:42

I'm stuck in bed today and my laptop is giving up the ghost. I've resorted to using my phone to watch Netflix. What a day we're all having.

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 27/11/2019 11:44

Oh no Hello!

bettys · 27/11/2019 11:48

I think it’s the weather seeping in. I’m having problems with a printer that keeps chewing up paper 😡

helloswellow · 27/11/2019 12:59

In the 2019 shows for the spreadsheet should I take out any that have already aired but none of us have watched? Or leave them in until the year has ended?

bettys · 27/11/2019 13:30

I’d leave the Netflix/Viki ones in as we may watch them ...

boatyardblues · 27/11/2019 13:48

I say leave them in, as they may be added to our usual services next year.

I can’t believe some of you are grumbling about a day of kdrama at home! 😡 I’ll swap...

boatyardblues · 27/11/2019 13:49

If you had no phone signal, I’d have more sympathy. Of course.

Sign of a good drama?
Looking forward to the commute home 😂

Bea · 27/11/2019 14:58

I've been watching kdramas for just over a year now... I've just looked up my first post on these threads....10th Nov 2018!!! and I've wracked up approximately 62 dramas (roughly using Hello's marvellous list)!!! Yikes!

But the big question is....?????

How the flip am I not fluent yet!???????

Together with my fangirling over BTS (my spotify is just Bangtan-tastic!)

I don't understand!!!!!! Confused

Hands up who will come with me to Seoul??? where I can completely immerse myself in the language and culture (and slap me when i over fangirl!!! BTS are EVERYWHERE by all accounts - albeit in cardboard cut out form! or like )

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 27/11/2019 16:20

I've not managed any dramas yet! I watched Dark Materials with DS, but then he perked up and won't leave me alone 😂.
I'm also puzzled as to why I'm not fluent yet.

bettys · 27/11/2019 16:51

Me ! Me ! Me! 🙋‍♀️I’ll come to Seoul! I can say daebak, heol and saranghae that should cover most situations 💁‍♀️

boatyardblues · 27/11/2019 17:52

I’m currently working on my nearest & dearest about a SK/Seoul trip. The kids are on board, DH still grumbling about cost. Perhaps we can leave the grumposaurus behind and join with you addicts.

.... And if we meet royalty!...

JOENHA!.... and bow!....

boatyardblues · 27/11/2019 19:23

I’ve discovered a Korean language course locally. Currently waiting for a response to see its suitable for beginners. I may be more useful on the Seoul trip if it comes off. I’ve decided my ambition it to achieve a level of proficiency where I can do my ironing whilst I’m watching kdrama. Currently it rattles along too quickly to catch the subs & iron at the same time. #modestgains

Be good if I could post in English without typos too. 🤦‍♀️

OP posts:
helloswellow · 27/11/2019 19:47

I'm at an awkward level where I understand, my writing is stunted but otherwise understandable but my speech is so bad because I never practice. We should start a Korean practice club once everyone's fluent enough!

boatyardblues · 27/11/2019 20:18

Eric Mun is 40! (1979 DOB) Blimey.

OP posts:
bettys · 27/11/2019 20:36

Uuuurghhhh!! Hairy feet! (ep 14) Was very sweet up until that point

boatyardblues · 27/11/2019 21:14

I was pondering the genius of the biological age shake-up work dinner earlier. Unless you get all the hierarchy stuff it doesn’t make a jot of sense, but when you do it’s really funny to see the ensuing chaos. 😆

OP posts:
AesopsMables · 27/11/2019 21:18

I'm on ep 12. WFH tomorrow and hope to watch 3 in a row tonight. DH is highly amused that I'm quite attracted to Eric Mun. Asked me if I have noticed I am attracted to the moody type characters (So Ji Sub in oh my Venus also) Hmm

I think I've appeased him by saying it's because they are both more mature like him ,as for joining in a holiday to Seoul with you all that may take some persuading now Wink

boatyardblues · 27/11/2019 21:24

Perhaps we should just leave the grumpy menfolk behind and hit Seoul Gangnam leopard-style. 🤷‍♂️

bettys · 27/11/2019 21:33

Yeah! 💃 kdrama addicts on tour!!

I’m on ep 15 & thought I was near the end but there are 18 episodes, I dunno how they are going to stretch it out
