A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime and search engine-accessible content available on shady non subscription streaming sites (listed as ‘alt site’ below). The subtitling on alternative sites is variable in quality and the pop-ups can be adult themed...

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although we may have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Sad news about Sulli. I would imagine it’s a very pressured environment.

I have fallen down a Secret Life of my Secretary rabbit hole and, being back in work, it’ll likely take me a while to get through it.

Secret Life of my Secretary is a hoot. It's got a fee weird niggles but I thought it was good. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

boatyardblues · 15/10/2019 08:31

I have to say, Kim Young Kwang is growing on me. He has great comedic timing and some of his outfits in SLOMS are hilarious. I like actors who aren’t afraid to look ridiculous. And those legs! I liked that in On Your Wedding Day, the high school teacher refers to him and Park Bo-Young as the giraffe and the dwarf. Grin

OP posts:
helloswellow · 15/10/2019 08:45

He's 6 foot 2, which doesn't seem exceptionally tall but he always looks like his legs never stop

boatyardblues · 15/10/2019 08:55

6’2”? Perfect.

OP posts:
bettys · 15/10/2019 10:07

He does have the most racehorsey of racehorse legs, especially in skinny jeans. And his mouth curls up at the corners and he has great comedic timing.....
I even watched D-Day (Viki) all the way through 'cos he was in it.

helloswellow · 15/10/2019 10:33

He was in a tiny little webdrama in 2016 and he was damn fine then too. Dr Ian was such a bad story, but such a little heart warmer.

boatyardblues · 15/10/2019 12:09

I feel I may have to watch D Day for research purposes. I am not as prone to a spiral as Betty or Bea, but on this occasion I may make an exception.

I’ve still got Black Knight on the back burner. Aside from leveraging his vast fortune to manoeuver the FL more firmly into his sphere of influence, the ML is being an absolute gentleman. As he seems predominantly motivated by improving her lot, rather than controlling her life choices, I can overlook it. He is firmly on her side and well boundaried in the face of other offers, so all in all one of the good guys. Also, he is distractingly dashing in a more age-appropriate way for this Gangnam leopard. Grin (Kim Rae Won is 38.)

BTIMFL has to be the finest K-Drama I have seen so far.

Stayed up late last night watching ep 11&12 it's really heating up. Going from enjoyable and amusing to sad/poignant and a little shocking

Highlights are; Kimchi making, kiss by the ocean, learning about ML past and CEO Ma.

Sooo good!

helloswellow · 15/10/2019 12:25

Kim Rae Won is just lovely. He was great in Doctors.

Really glad you're enjoying BTIMFL and I agree with your highlights. That drama is so good. Every bit of it is gold.

I stumbled across an odd scene in My Girlfriend and have yet to figure it out. The guy is showering with a towel on his shoulder. He grabbed it from the side before he got in so definitely a towel but I can't understand why. Any guesses?

Ah Aesops you’re making me want to watch it all over again!

boatyard Your appreciation of curly mouthed racehorse legs KYK is sending me on a review spiral of SLOfmyS plus thanks to hello I now need to hunt down Dr Ian. If you can sit through the cheesy ads on dramafast there is The Man Living In Our House which is patchy but showcases a fine shirtless moment in skinny jeans
Also may just check out Black Knight which has been on the list for a while.
Busy busy

boatyardblues · 15/10/2019 12:33

There’s another kdrama (My Love from a Star) where the alien ML showers with a white towel wrapped around him from waist down. In that one, I chalked it up to him being an alien and not getting how showers work (or body conscious and with a good agent). The shoulder towel? Maybe a naughty tattoo or an injury they needed to cover?

Ahhh a Kim Young Kwan spiral... I can heartily recommend... DDay is interesting I skippitydoh dahed it but still nice to see KYK in it!

I love him in The Guardians... It was ace! (Netflix)

I've skipped my way through all 50 eps of My Boy Mowgli.... a strange one... the story kept going off in tangents... I'm used to this to a certain extent in a kdrama... but this one really really went off on one... and i'm not sure what happened in the end... confusing to say the least... however the second leads were great fun and it was quite endearing ...

Now have to catch up on Vagabond / Melting

Looking fwd to Flower Joseon (started but taking a break) and Tales of Nokdu.... and quite tempted with starting BTIMFL as I've never watched it though it has been mentioned a 100 times!

boatyardblues · 15/10/2019 13:14

Shock Shock Shock

Timmy Xu does have a shoulder tattoo right at the back so maybe you're on to something boatyard

Bea you really need to watch BTIMFL! It may as well be mandatory watching at this point

bettys · 15/10/2019 13:31

quite tempted with starting BTIMFL as I've never watched it

😱😱 Bea!! How can you have missed it out?

AesopsMables · 15/10/2019 13:42

I've just watched ep 13Shock
In my lunch hour, I never take a lunch hour but could not resist any longer. No spoilers but Bea you have to watch!

Bea · 15/10/2019 14:57

Oooooo.... I'm very very intrigued now...!!!! I know! Blush Bettys and Boatyard have mentioned it soooo many times... (along with Chicago typewriter and Prison Playbook - which was the drama they were right in the middle of when I joined this chat! [grin)
I hang my head in shame! Grin Blush

bettys · 15/10/2019 15:56

I've started Black Knight but I don't have a scooby-doo what's going on! Still it has the FL from Rookie Historian so hopefully it's worth pursuing

boatyardblues · 15/10/2019 17:02

Betty - the first episode was car crash random, but it hits its stride pretty quickly. The supernatural element took me a bit by surprise, but I wasn’t put off my stride when it went all Joseon on me. Expect the unexpected!

'Tis a sad time in the Aesop's household tonight. I've powered through BTIMFL and on the final episode. I haven't stopped crying for the last 30mins. It's so sad :(

Just made a mug of sweet tea and a plate of florentines (I need the sugar) before I go in for the last one.

helloswellow · 15/10/2019 21:24

You can do it Aesops The only problem now is very few things come close to it in terms of fun, quality and enjoyment

AesopsMables · 15/10/2019 21:37

Hello, I think you may be right.
Already considering a little break to let it all soak in before I move onto the next. TBH I would download it for my trip to start all over again if it was on Netflix Grin

Bea · 15/10/2019 21:42

BTIMFL!! Oi!!..
Is it a sad ending??.... I don't watch sad endings!! bettys! Help me out here! 😭😭😭

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 15/10/2019 22:02

I thought I'd posted earlier but it's disappeared.
I'm also loving BTIMFL. Im just starting episode 15. I think I'm going to string it out and watch the last one tomorrow. It's soo lovely.
Aesops was it good???
