A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime and search engine-accessible content available on shady non subscription streaming sites (listed as ‘alt site’ below). The subtitling on alternative sites is variable in quality and the pop-ups can be adult themed...

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although we may have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Oooh goody! Top tip thanks - starting Friday

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 01/10/2019 20:24

Ok ok Boatyard you did mention shouty directors shoulders first 😂
Im v sad I only have one episode of Melo left.
But also there are so many things I want to watch!!

boatyardblues · 01/10/2019 21:54

Doing the Boaty shuffle and Tunnel is drawing me in nicely. I am reminded of what a giant CJH is compared to all the dainty women. In the coffee shop on the blind date at the beginning he looks like a Dad at primary school parents evening. The furniture looks tiny. 😆

bettys · 01/10/2019 22:54

CJH has just popped up in a cameo in Flower Crew ☺️

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 01/10/2019 23:19

Nearly finished Are you Human . LOLd at the FLs Dad saying Seo Kang Joon looks good in a rubbish track suit cos he "has long legs" 😂😂😂.
Also my phone now assumes I'm typing Seo Kang Joon after the first 2 letters 😍

boatyardblues · 01/10/2019 23:22

Tunnel is good, though why the hell Netflix think its ‘teen’ rated I have no idea. There was a fair bodycount in ep 1, unvarnished shots of manky corpses and the lead up to one of the murders was really unsettling viewing.

bettys · 01/10/2019 23:32

TheGirl your phone knows you so well? Have you seen Cheese in the Trap yet? You will get SML syndrome for sure!

boatyard agree, Tunnel is pretty dark

bettys · 01/10/2019 23:33

Annoying, that should’ve been a ! not a ? on my comment to The Girl

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 01/10/2019 23:38

Yes I have seen Cheese in the Trap I totally had 2ML syndrome. Why would you pick stiff and emotionally stunted ML (despite super racehorse legs), when you could have had lovely, rock and roll, piano genius SKJ???

bettys · 02/10/2019 07:19

I think she had a need to be needed, and felt protective of PHJs character.

boatyardblues · 02/10/2019 07:49

I couldn’t bear Cheese in the Trap and bowed out around ep 5. The way the ML tormented FL was hideous. I’m sad to hear I missed out on SKJ, but I’m not sure that changes anything for me.

True but he was awful to her! The ending was really rubbish too. The FL was still just waiting for ML to read her emails. Grrr

bettys · 02/10/2019 08:39

Agree the ending was rubbish, it made me cross for ages.

helloswellow · 02/10/2019 09:51

Cheese in the Trap was so disappointing and I'm still confused s to why they bought out the movie version last year. Surely it doesn't get better just because its condensed down.

Bea · 02/10/2019 17:10

I've heard the ending for Cheese was a huge disappointment!... Thus I've steered clear! 😁😱... Even though there's the allure of Race Horse Legs SKJ! 😭

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 02/10/2019 18:45

You could safely skip to the SKJ bits in Cheese 😂. He does wear an earring and eyeliner in some of it, if that would tempt you 👀

I thought I had nearly finished Are You Human but I've just realised it's 18 episodes not 16. I've kind of lost interest apart from the visuals.

I'm watching the last episode of Melo tonight 😭

Bea · 02/10/2019 20:19

The Girl.... Eyeliner??!!... And an earring you say!..... 😍😱

boatyardblues · 02/10/2019 20:21

This is where episode pointers and timestamps would be helpful.

Bea · 02/10/2019 20:23

never mind your slick backed hair and suits!

Kwak Dong Yeon in new drama! Minus broody angsty mussy hair and sword! Boo!!

helloswellow · 02/10/2019 20:44
probably the only worthwhile scene in CitT. Its got everything you need SKJ's beautiful face, fighting, some manly manliness and some nice shots of those legs in skinny jeans.
boatyardblues · 02/10/2019 21:02

This came up for me after that CitT clip: m.youtube.com/watch?v=G7mcU7yu7lk SKJ is surprisingly tolerant - and half decent at magic tricks!

OP posts:
helloswellow · 02/10/2019 21:11

The Return of Superman is dangerous because you see all these actors and idols being babysitters and then you want to have more children because it's just all so cute.

helloswellow · 02/10/2019 21:17

This conversation reminded me of this video too
If any of you like Lee Seung Gi and babies, we'll I hope your heart is ready to be thoroughly warmed.

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 02/10/2019 22:13

Thanks for the excellent videos Hello and Boatyard 😍😍😍
I've just spent half an hour trying to find a good clip of SKJ looking eyelinery in CitT. Maybe I was imagining it cos I can't find any? I think it was the first time you see him to cement his bad boy credentials, and then it's not as noticeable after that.

bettys · 02/10/2019 22:14

I am on my way home from a night out & these clips are making me smile like a complete loon on the train 🤣
