I just read in my weekly soap mag that young Hannah is going to die due to her eating disorder.

Having never had any experience of Anorexia it is really shocking i didn't realise people can dir that quickly from it i though it took ages to get that ill.

Anyway i think it's really sad.

That is rather full on isn't it! Surely would be better to do it from an angle of her coming back from it and learning to cope with the eating disorder rather than dying? DP noticed last night she is skinnier than used to be. We wondered if they have her on a stupid diet in real life or not.

Anorexia is the mental illness with the highest death rate, from suicide or starvation. I think it is not a bad thing to show sufferers and those on the edge that people regulalrly die from anorexia, and maybe some people might take it more seriously rather than calling every slender woman anorexic.

Oh no so sad. But i guess it happens in real life so no point hiding it.

I think it'sa good idea to have such a hard hitting storyline in this world of size zero we live in.
It will certainly make teenagers think twice.

KaySamuels · 09/08/2007 19:28

Yes maybe you are right - scare anyone in the same situation into asking for help.

lizziemun · 09/08/2007 20:55

Unfortunley it happen more often then not, as there are just not the places to get help from.

My SIL works at a clinic for eating disorders, and she was saying this week that they have just got their second 9 year old (boy) in the youngest they have had is a 6yr old girl.

Sunshinemummy · 09/08/2007 21:25

Gosh Lizziemum that's terrible. Hopefully the Hannah thing will make some people realise. She looks terrible when I've ducked in.

Itt really depends on your bodies ability to cope with a sudden change in diet.

The only difference with Hannah and anorexic people (such as myself) is that she went pretty much straight into not eating - where as about 75%of anorexics will eat around 100-350 cals a day.. as long as we burn then off.

So the fact that she is eating nothing means her metabolism is just not getting that little bit of food to start itself and shutting down. Therefore her body is starting to do the same.

But yes people can die that quickly from it...it all really depends on your body type and how much you eat or don't eat.

All in all though i agree with you all that this story line will help people realise about anorexia...

But what about all the girls out there who are borderline anorexics and have been thinking about begining to not eat...

Don't you think that this story line has given most some very good tips/tricks as to hiding the disorder....

I know when i started not eating I had to learn all of this from the internet support groups...it certainly wasn't broadcast at 6:30 every evening.

I think if I had have seen this when i was just starting to get the disorder - it would have actually spurred me on and given me some good ideas...

Even now i find it really enjoying to watch and found myself mentally praising her for not being tempted by the fridge.

So on one hand - yes it's good to show people the bad side... but not forgetting most anorexics reallty wouldn't mind if they just disappeared completely - so knowing that death is highly probable is really not much of a scare tactic.

MerlinsBeard · 03/09/2007 14:34

its not hannah its melissa!

glad they are using that angle tho tbh. A lot of ppl don't think it can do that

MerlinsBeard · 03/09/2007 14:36

they have actually done really well with the storyline instead of skirting around the issue like they do sometimes. They could have done the pretending to have eaten thing a but better imo

Hi All,

I am not a mum, but hope one day to be. I have found this page via a search and professional research into the Hollyoaks Anorexia storyline. I am a 24yr old women, whom suffered with Anorexia from the age of 16-21. I am now voluntarily conselling young women with similiar problems to those I had and am proving Anorexia (and ultimately depression) is not merely about food.

Having watched the Anorexia storyline, since its inception I am amazed at the accuracy they haved portrayed. Although there are plenty of things that Hollyoaks could or could not have covered within the storyline, my mother and I regularly tune into the programme to see the development of the story and end up in tears every episode. I am so happy that such a teen-orientated program has approached Anorexia with such detail and emotional understanding. The actress that plays Hannah is truely amazing, and I cannot explain how perfectly she has portrayed the illness to me and many of the young ladies I work with.

Additionally, I have had two friends call me over the past week, since the story has hit the limelight (so to speak). These two friends called me in tears, apologising for never seeing the bigger picture of how I used to feel, which is an amazing step at rebuilding some friendships.

I received no medical help when I was ill and recovered and learnt to overcome the illness with an amazing support from my parents. It is the most difficult physcological illness to understand from external parties and from friends and a terrifying illness from the point of a mother - which they are covering exactly. I do think the entire story on Hollyoaks would have really helped my family should it have been case studied 5years ago.

Warmest thoughts.

Didn't her friend die last night. Oh what's her name!? CARLA.

HorseyWoman · 06/09/2007 15:19

No that's her real name. Melissa.

Roxy2010 · 11/09/2012 09:40
