stumbledin.. you're right. Sanditon is set at the beginning of industrialisation and massive changes in society. JA was an astute chronicler of her times so she would have wanted to represent those changes in her work.

Kit19 · 30/08/2019 10:10

I think the comment about it reflecting changes to society because of the industrial revolution is very true. Apparently one of the characters yet to be introduced is lower class but keen to make his way through society but comes against class prejudice

Elderflower14 · 30/08/2019 19:21

The music is Aaron Copelands Rodeo Suite.
I'm enjoying it.

Lizzzar · 31/08/2019 14:35

Margaret Drabble in her introduction to the penguin edition does say that Jane Austen could possibly have been looking to the future, and obviously she did have at least mixed feelings about the traditional landed aristocracy and richer gentry. But I think you can tell that as early as Pride and Prejudice, and Sanditon just abruptly stops, probably because of Austen's state of health. If a business man of working class origin is introduced, this is a completely new character, and I think it's impossible to say how she would have felt about it. I would regard this Sanditon as a Regency romp with minimal connection to what she actually wrote.

FlaviaAlbia · 31/08/2019 15:05

I've watched it now. It's all the book crammed into the first bit of the first episode, I couldn't imagine how they'll get 4 episodes out of it and then I checked and it's 8 episodes, not 4 Shock

It felt a bit like they were trying to get the actual book out of the way so they could move on and get on with what they want to.

I do like the actress who plays Charlotte, her face is very expressive.

Kit19 · 31/08/2019 18:15

To me Andrew Davies sanditon is essentially a glorified fanfic - which means it could be Wide Sargasso Sea brilliant or it could 50 shades....

ChocChocButtons · 31/08/2019 22:50

It’s adapted/written by Andrew Davis who created the 1995 Colin Firth bbc pride and prejudice so it should be brilliant.

No the mum isn’t Michelle Williams

Kit19 · 01/09/2019 08:31

It’s a real test for Davies - his other adaptations have all been complete books, in this Austen’s material was used up in the first half of the first episode so it really is his story based on characters created by Austen

Spot the other Jane Austen books references during the series:

So they are step brother/sister.

Good looking guy still being a prick.

JaneJeffer · 01/09/2019 21:29

I can't remember anyone's names! The girl who is Miss Denholm's ward seemed to fancy the step-sister.

More P&P dialogue.

Loopytiles · 01/09/2019 21:41

Yes, direct lifts of the dialogue in the luncheon scene! Very clunky.

Sewrainbow · 01/09/2019 21:49

This is dreadful, unashamed lifting of Jane Austen text, did Davies think we would think he was clever doing that? It has fallen sadly flat in my opinion. Very lazy! It's been years since I read Austen's Sanditon so can't remember how much of the characters were established.

I thought if the stunt pineapple straight away Grin

I wonder whether Davies did any research before writing this script?

Loopytiles · 01/09/2019 22:01

Nude sea bathing seems to have been his only “research”

MyOtherProfile · 01/09/2019 23:19

I know men did bathe nude in those days but would they really have done it where the young ladies were all so delicately covered up?

TheCraicDealer · 01/09/2019 23:35

Just watched ep2 with DH and even he was sitting going "that would never have happened!" when Lady Denham was having a go at Miss Lamb. And he pointed out that in the last episode she seemed like a wiley older lady, then she just swivelled to nasty piece of work in this one.

I also can't understand why the step siblings thought Clara had anything on pervy brother though after the handjob in the park? Confused how did that mean she'd played the brother?

Theo James is obviously a babe but any time he's on screen I just remember the last scene he was in in The Inbetweeners movie where he had shit stuck to his nose.

JaneJeffer · 01/09/2019 23:43

If he didn't have penetrative sex with her then he didn't ruin her reputation (or hymen) so the hand shandy didn't count.

I am enjoying it. The sucking up to money is more obvious than it would have been in P&P. It comes across as somewhat coarser than the previous JA though not having read t not sure how truthful to the original it is.

PirateWeasel · 02/09/2019 17:47

I'm seeing a bit of a love triangle being set up with Charlotte, Grumpy Hot Brother, and Cute Young Architect... Also, how Colonel Brandon-ish is the mysterious history between Grumpy Hot Brother and Miss Lamb?

FatherFintanFay · 02/09/2019 18:12

I feel like the whole series could be replaced with an on-screen caption that says "They had bottoms in the Regency period too, you know!"

colouringinpro · 02/09/2019 22:51

hmmm. Just watched episode 1. It is Austen fanfic by Andrew Davies which may prove to be entertaining, but was middling tonight. imho!

And I'm sorry but the sets were crap! CGI only a little better! Totally without the subtlety, wit and intelligence of JA.

Some pretty faces and frocks...

Rhubarb01 · 03/09/2019 00:54

Having watched episode 2 and decided to regard it as an austenesque drama rather than an Austen adaptation, I found I enjoyed it more.

I agree with pirate that there's potential for a love triangle as the young architect seemed quite engaging.

The only thing that makes me slightly uncomfortable is how young, in a Catherine Morland inspired way, Charlotte Heywood appears. I don't know how old she's supposed to be, but she looks and seems very girlish and, lets face it, Sidney Parker is very much a mature man. Lovely as that is for us slightly more mature ladies, and I really don't mind how much screen time he has, the fact that he's got a young ward a similar age to Charlotte, seems a bit odd. I'm hoping we see Charlotte mature a little, because I can't really see why he would be interested in her if she doesn't. I just find the disparity in age a bit uncomfortable - somehow, it seems more acceptable on the page - Northanger Abbey, Sense & Sensibility, Emma, than it does here - I suppose it's just TV.
