You have a point about war and peace - loved that. Ahhh must rewatch that too

MonChatEstMagnifique · 11/10/2019 14:16

Ooh, thanks Jane. Just had a look for that on Amazon and its on Kindle unlimited which I have. I shall start it later.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 11/10/2019 14:18

Hope you get your email problem with Amazon sorted, that's a pain.

lululup · 11/10/2019 14:29

Need to check out W and P. Have to wait until Sunday so I can clear the decks of my Charlotte and Sidney obsession.

FatherFintanFay · 11/10/2019 15:07

I largely enjoyed the W & P adaptation except I thought he made a mess of the Natasha/Anatole storyline by a) cramming it all into about half an episode so that it looked like she had thrown Andrei over after about 5 minutes of hand-holding with another man, and b) completely miscasting Anatole - he just spent the whole time sneering and looking down Natasha's bodice, there was nothing remotely appealing about him. Possibly it would have worked better if they'd swapped him with the actor who played Boris.

But I am a complete Natasha/Pierre shipper so overall I completely loved it Grin. It looks beautiful as well, all that pre-revolutionary glitz and bleak snowscape action.

Babybel90 · 11/10/2019 15:20

@FatherFintanFay I’ve never read W&P because I’d been put off by its reputation but the AD adaptation made me want to read it because I can imagine there’s so much more to the story. When AD is good he’s very very good but I guess he has to have the material to work with in the first place. I loved the Anatole actor, he normally wouldn’t be the type I’d go for but I found him almost hypnotising!

FatherFintanFay · 11/10/2019 15:24

I didn't think he was at all attractive - not physically, as such, just the attitude he radiated. I also don't generally rate James Norton and have found him rather wooden in most things other than Happy Valley, but actually that kind of fitted Andrei and his repressed depths Grin so I didn't mind. Paul Dano was adorable.

Rhubarb01 · 11/10/2019 16:36

Oh dear, I watched about three episodes of War and Peace, fell behind in my viewing and never found my way back to it. You won't be surprised to hear that I haven't read it either.

As for the Sidney attraction - well, he has an obvious appeal, but as I've previously said, and others also feel, I think the disparity is too great. I don't really see why Sidney would be attracted to her. That said, I also don't like the way he was rude and shouted at Charlotte in the street - a gentleman would never have done that, no matter what the social status of the lady in question. Darcy, by contrast, was proud and aloof but had manners. Perhaps this is the 21st century slant on things - a bit like Lord Babbington's "Victim" declaration to Esther - sweet though it was! Smile

kaytees · 11/10/2019 18:13

I'm with you @JaneJeffer - jack Fox certainly has the allure over Theo for me. But I like Laurence too... strange as that kind of posh schoolboy thing is not my jam.

I have spent much of my commute home smirking over the hat related jokes, after a rather hard day at work it's been much appreciated. This thread has been quite lovely! And I am definitely going to watch war and peace after to fill the void (which I didn't think I would have, why have I become so invested?!)

FatherFintanFay · 11/10/2019 18:25

I'll miss this thread when Sanditon is over too. Perhaps we could all agree to find something new to get fixated on and start a thread about that? I for one am insanely excited about His Dark Materials, but I don't expect that to be ludicrous and soapy so it may not be an adequate substitute. Are there any forthcoming costume dramas that anyone knows of?

Rhubarb01 · 11/10/2019 18:45

The nice, fun comments and the friendly vibe of this thread reminds me of how I first got into MN. I was one of the original posters on the Our Girl thread which is still going five years later. We've discussed all the series of Our Girl, whether good or bad because of a shared and somewhat inexplicable over-investment in Captain James and Molly from series 1. We haven't always liked everything about the later series, but we've kept chatting all this time and are "waiting out" for the next series. Some posters have moved away from MN to other platforms, some have made real life friends beyond MN, but we've kept going for over 50 threads. We are currently reviewing another old TV series, to keep us entertained. Good luck, I'm sure you can find something else that appeals to you and keep on posting!

Hi rhu Grin

Rhubarb01 · 11/10/2019 19:13

Hiya Kazza !!

Well, I've managed to widen my horizons beyond OG on here, but I'm hoping we'll manage at least another five years.

JaneJeffer · 11/10/2019 19:15

kazza are you a secret Our Girl fan? You never said Grin

Rhubarb I kept bursting out laughing every time I remembered your "free spirit crossed way dimwit" comment!

I decided to bypass Amazon by ordering straight to my kindle but I ended up ordering Set in the Silver Sea by JA and A Gentleman by mistake and I can't get rid of it now. I'll be reading Sanditon books from now until Christmas Confused

Thank you Jane - I have chuckled away at all the comments this afternoon about Young Stringer's hat, the size of it and it's ability to stay on his head during any...ahem...activities.

As for the unwanted Kindle download, you should be able to ask for a refund if you access your account and get it removed.

lululup · 11/10/2019 20:00

I tried to download the accompanying book too but not available until 31st. I wanted to assure myself of my desired ending. I am losing the plot!

I can’t believe it! I’m actually watching Our Girl now, I saw it on iPlayer and remembered I really liked it at the time, I always loved Smurf though, I wish he’d just found a nice girl to settle down with instead of dying 😢 I always seem to go for the loser 🤷‍♀️

FlaviaAlbia · 11/10/2019 21:40

I have a funny feeling that return to Sanditon is the other completed version I have. If it is, I thought I should like it as the author's background sounded promising but I hated it. I think I might go for a kindle unlimited trial to find out, It'll easier than getting the ladder out to find the actual book which was banished to the loft Grin

Rhubarb01 · 11/10/2019 21:49

Ahh Babybel alas poor Smurf...let's hope a similar fate does not await Young Stringer...whatever he does, he needs to avoid any altercations with goats, it will lead to trouble, mark my words!

kazzaD66 · 11/10/2019 23:04

Jane you never asked Grin

Only really Series 1 and a bit into Series 2. I admit, I'm a big CJ and Molly fan. It all went a bit downhill after that and I only watched for Ben Aldridge really Blush ConfusedGrin

TheCraicDealer · 12/10/2019 00:16

DH and I have just caught up- been off having a baby, haven't I?! DD was unimpressed with the last two episodes screened since we got home, but it was good as we got to talk about the plot whilst we had it paused to settle her. After Babbington's declaration DH announced that IHHO he was the real "hero" because he has managed to be Not A Knob the whole way through and is more believable than Stringer who seems a bit too good to be true. Tbh I'd take Babbington over either Sidney and Young Stringer, even with his dodgy taste in coats.

It's definitely improved over the last two episodes I think, although losing patience with Miss Lamb. I'm not sure where they're going to go with her in the last episode beyond her continuing to look surly.

Perhaps we could all agree to find something new to get fixated on and start a thread about that?

FatherFintanFay there’s a series coming to Netflix in the NY which is based on The Bridgerton books by romantic novelist, Julia Quinn. It’s set in the regency era and is about as accurately Austen-y as Sanditon has been, with more shagging. They were my gateway drug to historical romance novels Blush

FlaviaAlbia · 12/10/2019 08:20

Congratulations TheCraicDealer! FlowersCake how lovely!

That series sounds like it has promise

englishmummyinwales · 12/10/2019 08:54

@TheCraicDealer congratulations on your new arrival! That series sounds very interesting and I have Netflix so thank you.

I haven’t confessed to DH quite how Sanditon obsessed I’ve become, nor my crush on Theo James, but at the end of the last episode I said, in what I hoped was an enigmatic way “perhaps Lord Babington is the greatest romantic hero of them all?”

Reader, he grunted. I didn’t want to give myself away so left it at that.
