I thought this was the last episode until it got to only five minutes to go and nothing was happening!

Lord Babington is a good evb. Hopefully she's realised!!

JaneJeffer · 06/10/2019 22:06

Maybe there's going to be a huge twist Father (doubtful).

And Miss Lambe and Arthur, well I never.

I feel so sad for all the script writers who would give their right arm to get the chance to write a Sunday night period drama on ITV and who could’ve paid a little bit of attention to historical accuracy or a half decent plot!

Charlotte’s a stroppy teenager who ought to run a mile from Sidney who’s either being exceptionally rude to her or can’t keep his hands off her!

And poor young Stringer would presumably fall head over heels with any girl who paid him 5 minutes attention.

And will someone please sort out Charlotte’s hair and put her hat on!

englishmummyinwales · 06/10/2019 22:19

Oh be still my beating heart! Sorry I don’t care about the historical inaccuracies, that was a most satisfying episode. Far less contrived than I expected - Stringer didn’t have to go through an awkward declaration, the thigh stroking was all in the name of rowing technique😉, Lady D survives, Sidney sent Eliza packing and oh..., I might be Team Babington!

I forgive AD for not sticking to my predicted script!

MouseBatMummy · 06/10/2019 22:56

I really enjoyed it too! Perfect Sunday night viewing as far as I'm concerned.

GidgetGirl · 06/10/2019 23:27

I love a bit of Regency fluff, and although this is far from being one of my favourites, it scratches a Sunday night itch. Cannot fathom what anyone sees in Sidney though - yuk! He’s got such a bitch-face. Tom Parker on the other hand.. I’ve never fancied Kris Marshall but would definitely do Tom Parker.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 06/10/2019 23:48

Shock He's so good looking. But I guess if you like Tom then your tastes are very different to mine. Grin

I really enjoyed tonight's episode, very satisfying as Englishmummy said.

GidgetGirl · 07/10/2019 00:02

To be fair, I’ve always had what could be considered more unusual taste in men! Mmmm, Tom Parker all the way. Attraction is a funny thing..

MonChatEstMagnifique · 07/10/2019 00:43

It is. I definitely like some men who are not as conventionally attractive as Theo. I will always think of Kris Marshall as Nick in My Family. Grin

Kit19 · 07/10/2019 08:22

Leo suter is ridiculously handsome & it’s funny how he’s not been shown naked yet - assume it’s because producers saw Victoria/clique/beechams house and thought “fuck he’s a bit ripped for the designated friend zone”

Anyway so glad lady D isn’t dead & the comments about the floor were 😆😆

Could we just please stop forever with the misunderstanding/obstacle of the week with Sidney & Charlotte please? So very very bored of it

Stringer needs to get a new job in London & leave them all & that ridiculous hat behind

FatherFintanFay · 07/10/2019 08:34

Just trying to imagine Charlotte starting a thread about Sidney over on Relationships:

"I've caught feelings for a guy I met recently through friends. We didn't like each other when we first met and he was rude and patronising towards me. He seemed determined to interpret everything I did in a negative way, and I admit I was pretty rude back. But now I'm confused because he has been behaving completely differently, being flirtatious and paying me compliments, finding excuses to touch me etc. But we keep getting crossed wires and he blows hot and cold with me all the time. He's about 10 years older than me and is quite good looking but I don't know if I can be bothered with all the drama. WWYD?"

How many people would be advising her to put up with it just because he's hot, I wonder..?

DisneyMadeMeDoIt · 07/10/2019 08:35

This is an ‘distinctly average’ Sunday night period drama but JA would be turning in her grave, her name being linked to it!

Lacks all the Witt, restraint, atmosphere and intricacies that make JA wonderful. Violence, sex, borderline incest, completely separate sub plots that don’t engage the title character. They’d have better named it Sandioaks (sanditon/Hollyoaks) and left JA well out of it 🙈

Kit19 · 07/10/2019 08:52

@FatherFintanFay aaaand you’ve nailed it!! Bluntly if Sidney looked like the back end of a bus, everyone would have had her kicking him to the kerb weeks ago. However it appears that society offers a sliding scale where being good looking allows you leeway to be a dick.

@disneymademedoit sandioaks 😆

JaneJeffer · 07/10/2019 09:03

The shenanigans in Miss Denham's gorgeous house is what makes it for me. Couldn't give a toss about the Parkers.

JaneJeffer · 07/10/2019 09:04

Lady Denham that is!

MonChatEstMagnifique · 07/10/2019 09:38

But I don't think he's a bad person. He was a bit rude on their first meeting admittedly, but Mr Darcy wasn't exactly lovely to Elizabeth at the beginning. Sidney's shouting and his annoyance at Charlotte were because she was rude about his family and because she put Miss Lambe in danger by being very naive. He's loyal to his family and has a duty to look out for Miss Lambe so I think his reactions to Charlotte were understandable. He's a good guy although I don't like the brothel visiting, even if it may have been what men did back then.

I think Lady Denham is my favourite character though.

FatherFintanFay · 07/10/2019 09:47

MonChatEstMagnifique I think Mr Darcy is a bit of a different case. When he first declared himself to Lizzy he was completely taken aback to be rejected and couldn't understand why she wasn't jumping at the chance to have him. He went away and worked on himself, by the standards of the time, and made himself worthy of her before he asked her again. The power imbalance created by her lack of wealth in relation to his is lessened by her wit and intelligence and her sense of self-worth. I can't see anything remotely similar with Charlotte - they've only just remembered to throw in a bit about how she likes reading (have we even seen her with a book up until this point?) to try and make her look even vaguely like someone a man like Sidney would be interested in. I don't buy it.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 07/10/2019 10:26

FatherFintanFay

I think they've tried to redress the balance by showing Charlottes as independent and determined by making her very outspoken, the way she took charge when old Stringer hurt his leg, her volunteering at the cricket match and going to London by herself to look for Miss Lambe. Although Sidney has been frustrated with Charlotte, he has admired her nature to do what she believes is right. Sidney has tried to do the right thing by his family although that's difficult with a brother like Tom. He wanted to do the done thing and settle down but was left heartbroken and also he's tried to do the right thing by Miss Lambe. I think he's a good guy. He did 'allow' Miss Lambe and
Otis a proper goodbye because of what Charlotte had said, I think he apologised for his behaviour in one episode showing he was rethinking his behaviour. I'm sure there are other things I've forgotten that they've done to shows that Sidney has worked on himself and finally last nights episode where he said something along the lines of he's at his best when he's with Charlotte.

JaneJeffer · 07/10/2019 10:35

Mr. Darcy may have been rude to Elizabeth but he would never have shouted at her.

I laughed when they mentioned Charlotte liked reading and there was Stringer with a book in his hand.

OP posts:
MonChatEstMagnifique · 07/10/2019 10:41

No, but Elizabeth wouldn't have done some of the things that Charlotte did. Helping Miss Lambe see Otis was not thought out at all. Sidney seems more passionate/emotional than Mr Darcy which I like.

FatherFintanFay · 07/10/2019 10:42

My issue is that AD is applying modern ideas about what an upper-class Regency man like Sidney would admire in a woman and it just doesn't work for a drama that is ostensibly supposed to be based on Jane Austen characters. Being outspoken and having her own opinions is one thing - behaving recklessly, being loose-tongued in polite society, going off without a chaperone - these are different things entirely. Men didn't want wives who might embarrass them in public or be a liability. Lizzy Bennet might have been free-thinking and strong-willed, but in the end she would never have flouted convention in the ways that Charlotte does, and if she had done, I don't suppose Mr Darcy would have been proposing to her.

Newgame989 · 07/10/2019 11:03

Yes bang on, Charlotte is more Lydia than Lizzie! Sandioaks is about right. It’s a tough call for historical drama lovers, you want it to get good numbers so they keep making historical drama but you wonder if they have to sacrifice so much in the process.

Compared to the dramatisation of Wolf Hall, which was the best realised book to tv thing I’ve seen in ages - it can be done...

I’m getting a bit fed up with Edward’s pantomime villain act too.

englishmummyinwales · 07/10/2019 12:39

@MonChatEstMagnifique I agree with you. He has evolved and has finally realised that he likes himself better as a result of Charlotte’s influence. I think she has developed too and can recognise that she hasn’t always gone about things the right way.

Ultimately it’s a light historical drama which was an adaptation for only 26 minutes and is meant to be fun. I would never begin to compare it to Wolf Hall which I also loved but for different reasons. There’s room for both I think.

I’d love a second series but only if they use the resort to introduce new characters and storylines. I don’t want to see Sidney and Charlotte fight and make up each week (although happy to witness Sidney’s regular bathing habit). I’ve seen no concrete suggestion of another series since it was first promoted and am not sure if the viewing figures have been high enough. I also doubt that having been the leads, Theo James and Rose Williams will want to become minor characters. I’d love to see Mr Stringer and Miss Lambe’s stories expanded but I guess we will see what happens in the final episode.

It’s strange - I wasn’t gripped from the start but I’m going to miss it!

Babybel90 · 07/10/2019 13:22

Charlotte is more Lydia than Lizzie! yes!

I’m surprised she didn’t get a dress I g down from Mary about going off to London behind her back, or sent back to her parents, just look at the fuss in P&P when Lydia does a midnight flit, it’s assumed that her whole family will be ruined by her actions.

And why is Miss Lambe living in such a crappy little house when we’re told her fortune is greater than Lady Denhams? I hope she ends up with the chubby simpleton brother so he ends up richer than the lot of them!
