I hate this. Why is it not working for me?

Looks like no one else watched OP !!

I thought it was bit 'scratch the surface' really and wasn't exactly helping maybe the most in need.

SouthWestmom · 09/08/2019 07:03

Haha yes!

I didn't like him picking pupils, felt sorry for the ones who maybe were quieter. Surprised the school allowed it.

I imagine in reality that he was heavily steered towards them. At one point we saw the girl's predicted grades compared with her performance. There was a lot in it for the school's data if his interventions were successful!

magicsoakingmyspine · 09/08/2019 08:18

Hmmm the kid who was breaking the rules by selling sweets, was the one who was rewarded. Sending out a nice message there.

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2019 09:41

I think we were supposed to view it as 'enterprise'. There's a good reason that sort of thing is banned in schools!

matahairyy · 09/08/2019 09:42

I hated the school. Needed a better behaviour policy. Better uniform and phone policy. Standards were appalling.

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2019 09:50

Really? I thought its uniform was quite good!

That's a harsh judgment, I think. It seemed a more standard, ordinary school than some we have seen recently on telly.

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2019 09:52

It is RI on Ofsted but the report comments that the new head is making an impact. I think you should be more shocked by the class size of 60 and the impact of budget cuts, tbh.

GreenTulips · 09/08/2019 09:52

Anyone else hoping their parents were watching their behaviour?

matahairyy · 09/08/2019 09:55

Nails? Lashes? Jesus no

matahairyy · 09/08/2019 09:56

The lack of sanction for talking - whether a class of 60 or an assembly of 200 was shocking.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/08/2019 10:00

I was surprised he was allowed to see pupil’s data. It’s not like he was officially working there.

The 60 in a class was awful, but the teacher did seem a bit ineffectual with them.

SouthWestmom · 09/08/2019 10:10

I just thought how crap I would have felt not to be picked - it's another thing you don't know you're competing in until you've lost.

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2019 10:34

Like I said OP, I imagine the school picked them. I'd be surprised if they both weren't PP students.

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2019 10:36

It's difficult if you are on camera as a teacher so you are likely to behave a little differently. Who would want to launch into a full old fashioned bollocking on TV? Also - don't forget! - editing. We don't know if sanctions were applied. That wasn't the point of the programme, after all. Loui later did say the head was strict.

I actually didn't see any poor behaviour in the assembly?

Interesting how quickly this thread has become a criticism of teachers and the school....

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2019 10:38

mata, I work in a far more affluent school than that and our uniform is shocking compared to this one! I saw the nails, the make up, the lashes (those nails drive me potty!!) but I also saw knee length skirts , smartly worn blazers and - to give him his due- Loui was a very smartly turned out boy.

SouthWestmom · 09/08/2019 10:41

I'm not criticising the school. I don't like the programme. I didn't like the guy - he seemed to be doing it for personal validation and stuff.

It felt uncomfortably groomy to me. You have an adult who lies to children and staff about who he is (both his name and his role). He is a volunteer TA according to his lanyard, but it's ok for him to pop round to a pupil's house to discuss her exam results with her (single) mum, and to make a quite odd phone call to the single mum of another pupil. Then he tells a 15 year old girl to come into a room with him and close the door. (NO! KEEP THE DOOR OPEN! Don't they have any induction for volunteers?). And then he gives them money.

The girl looked really uncomfortable when he said he wasn't who she thought she was. And why is he paying for tuition for one child? First, it sends the message to the teachers that their work isn't good enough. And secondly, why single out one child? Also, she knew what she wanted to do and it wasn't running her own business, so I would have thought that she was outside the remit of the programme.

And as for the boy, if he's making £30 in a morning by selling sweets, he is already earning as much as a TA, - surely he can buy his own laptop.

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2019 10:46

No, I didn't think you were OP!

Hmmm... I quite liked Paul compared to what I expected. But am never keen on the message that the few exceptions to the rule of people with zero qualifications doing well for themselves sends out to young people.
I was glad that he was making Loui do college though.

Of course, if schools actually had the money to fund tutors and 1:1 support and dedicated support workers. these kids wouldn't be so endangered. It's that 'small society ' thing. Never mind budget cuts; let's just find a rich sponsor. Sticking plaster approach.

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2019 10:47

Yeah, I loved the way the programme told us it was part of a support worker's role to do home visits! Ermmmmm.... no. Not usually!

SouthWestmom · 09/08/2019 10:49

Yes that's why I didn't like it - 'groomy ' is right. Weird the level of access and the home visits and phone calls.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/08/2019 10:58

Yes, it didn’t sit right with me, when he told the pupils that he wasn’t who he said he was. Got the safeguarding tingles going!

I am sure the pupils were picked out specifically.

I did feel sorry for the teacher with the 60 in the class, and the cameras don’t help both for the teacher and the pupils, I’m sure some would be playing up for them.

PinkFlowerFairy · 09/08/2019 11:00

I didnt see it. But 60 in a class!?!?!?

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2019 11:03

Yeah, but a science class of about 8!

matahairyy · 09/08/2019 11:21

Imagine as Hoy phoning home to ask if she helps around the house
