A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

There are suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. Cautionary note: in categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. romance and thriller; supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with blossoming relationship aspects. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier elements. View the categories below as approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg for younger teens.

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the incessant fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis and other Korean terms of address and honorifics, there are good resources online.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

All caught up on One Spring Night. I feel like I have to finish the Taiwanese thing, a bit like climbing Kilimanjaro, so I can say I did it & once was enough...

Boatyard... I watched a bit of The Guardian last night... The style of Chinese dramas just don't compare with kdrama... I think they dub in studios afterward so it doesn't sound natural!... Also they just don't seem as slick... And perhaps I'm just soooo used to hearing korean... But the Korean language seems to be easier on the ear! 😂 😂

Boatyard The Crowned Clown is stunningly beautiful, give it a go!

I'm watching One Spring Night too, 2 eps in. Enjoying so far, nice to see a story line about a single dad as more often single mums in these things I think.

Finished I'm not a Robot nice, if only they hadn't made it into a trope about disability cures etc. Great acting though.

I realised yesterday that the professor in I'm not a Robot is the sidekick lawyer from I hear your voice and is also in Dream High which dd has been ploughing through. Dream High also has the nicer ML from Boys Over Flowers.

Was saying to dd earlier (she's been ill off school and watching Dream High non stop) that it seems more American than a lot of Kdrama. No piggy back rides, but quite a lot of wrist grabs. Has a disability story line in that too, not sure how realistic but at least not a cure.

Ginger - I’m so pleased you are enjoying One Spring Night. It looks set for proper lift off (plus shit hitting fan) this week. FL has started to smile and loosen up, so Betty can stand down the snipers.

I think I have a bit of catching up to do. I was hoping now the old boyfriend is 'giving her space' that we'd get some cute romance building... Sounds like a slow burn.

I was frustrated initially, but I actually think the pay-off will be huge, Ginger. They have laid the foundations for some really interesting story lines. Ep 7 looks to be pivotal for the news anchor sister too.

OOOoooo... Just found a little rich vein of Kim Myung Soo (Lovely Angel) dramas on netflix... and it turns out they're ones already on my list so there's more incentive to watch now...

Ms Hammarubi - which I think Boatyard and Bettys have already seen... I remember you mentioning as it's got korean knightley in (Go Ara who acts with her chin in Hwrang!)

One More Time - which I've already watched and thought was a fun little drama (only 8 eps) might watch again as it was one of my early forays into kdrama

The Emperor Owner of The Mask - which I'd added to my list already as it's got Yo Seung Ho (I'm Not A Robot" in...) however won't delve into that one until I've finished Crowned Clown as I can only take a couple of historical dramas at a time... I can get storylines mixed up (started to mix up Kingdom and Crowned Clown last night as I was watching)

I really really should be getting on with some work but I am soooo easily distracted! I'm soooo rubbish!

I love it how you can put a korean school uniform on any kdrama actor and they instantly look 16... or is it because the actors are already bascially 16!!!!????

I couldn't get on with Ms Hammurabi in spite of lovely lovely Angel guy, but will check out the others.

I am torn between catching up with Angel & cracking on with Crowned Clown.....might wait until all subs are up for Angel tomorrow. Have to go into town today so watching limited pah!!

Awww... I've stopped myself now and am getting down to some work... Ms Hammurabi looks really promising... looking forward to jumping in... Yes... I might watch all of crowned clown then move to Ms Hammarubi and then by the time i've finished those.. there will be a whole slew of secret life of secretary / Absolute Boyfriend and Angels last mission to watch!!!
However I've got a work thing coming up... which i fear will mean absolutely no time for drama watching! I'll be flat out! No drama for a couple of days... how will i survive?!!!!!

The uniforms work so long as they don’t make them wear dodgy wigs (cf HH KJW in Antique Bakery & the 2 women in Fight My Way).

Is it good boatyard? I’m waiting for both eps to be up & saving for tomorrow as a treat. Currently Lost in Joseon with the Crowned Clown which is a beautiful rollercoaster ride of goodies, baddies, epic scenery & nice little relationships.

Just watching a bit of Crowned Clown, partly to bookmark it but also for a quick look-see. The dying king’s “undeserving arse” talk with the crown prince is a great start. Looks brill.
