A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 5 (previous threads linked from OP of each preceding thread)

There are suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. Cautionary note: in categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. romance and thriller; supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with blossoming relationship aspects. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier elements. View the categories below as approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg for younger teens.

Comedy (with a side order of absurd)
I picked up a celebrity on the street (Viki)
My Fellow Citizens (Viki)

Crime/Thriller
Healer (Netflix)*
Heartless City (Viki)
He is Psychometric (Viki)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Life on Mars (classy remake of BBC series, Dramafast)
Live (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Suspicious Partner (Netflix)*

Romance - lighter & fluffier
Beating Again (Netflix)
Coffee Prince (Netflix)
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Happy Once Again (Netflix)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
Love from a Star (Netflix)*
Pinocchio (Netflix)
Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)**
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
The Beauty Inside (Viki/Netflix)
The Last Empress (Viki)
Thirty Not Seventeen (Viki)
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (Netflix/Viki)
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)**
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

Romance - heavier weight/more grown up
Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Just Between Lovers (Viki)**
Mr Sunshine (Netflix)
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Red Carpet - film (Netflix, very adult content)
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
The Package (Viki)

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - fluffier
Goblin (Viki)*
I am not a Robot (Netflix)
Legend of the Blue Sea (Viki/Netflix)
While You Were Sleeping (Viki)*

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - darker
Black (Netflix)*
The Guest (Dramafast)
W (Viki & Netflix)*

Zombies
Kingdom (Netflix)*
Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)

Mad as a box of frogs/uncategorisable
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the incessant fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis and other Korean terms of address and honorifics, there are good resources online.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

HH KJW - racehorse surely?

bettys · 11/07/2019 23:51

His legs aren't really featured in it, I just like the clip Grin

bettys · 11/07/2019 23:54

As far as Kdrama stars and their floofy dogs go, that Lee Seung-Gi pic (Puppy in a pocket - awwww!) is impossible to beat but I do like this

boatyardblues · 12/07/2019 00:02

I had somehow got it into my mind that HH KJW was a sexy shortarse, but he’s 6’ tall so definitely a racehorse.

That’s a very cute puppy, Betty, but the challenge was floofy dog with oppa.

boatyardblues · 12/07/2019 00:25

Sadly only CJH’s arm in this one, bit the puppy looks quite new so give it a couple of months: www.instagram.com/p/BVmCOwSHf-G/?hl=en Some great photos on his feed though.

Oh come on an arm doesn’t count!!!

boatyardblues · 12/07/2019 06:36

Uh oh. Busted. 😂

boatyardblues · 12/07/2019 06:49

Park Min Young has a floofy dog too: www.instagram.com/p/By4AXrGJgtq/ Do you think all of them are real pets or that some might be borrowed for strategically cute insta shots?

OP posts:
bettys · 12/07/2019 07:40

I think most are real, after all they can’t post pics of their relationships as they are mostly secret. Not convinced by CJHs floofy dog though as there were only a couple of pics from 2017 😱

bettys · 12/07/2019 07:41

That should’ve been 🤔 not 😱

boatyardblues · 12/07/2019 08:18

And was it even CJH’s arm?

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 12/07/2019 08:22

I started watching Are You Human Too last now for entirely shallow reasons, but it seems to be OK. Weirdly I’m sure the Czech locations were also used as ‘Vienna’ in Morning Cantabile. There’s clearly an (eastern?) European country with favourable tax breaks for its film industry.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 12/07/2019 08:27

Although I thought the mother’s semi-gothic hideaway in ‘Czech’ could just as easily be in Korea, as there seems to be a degree on enthusiasm for other nations’ architectural vernacular in amongst the mega shiny, futuristic modern buildings and the tradional houses and temples. It would probably drive English Heritage types nuts, but I feel there’s something to be said for less prescriptive planning regs.

It is actually in Czech Republic looks a bit damp to me

This website is great for finding locations koreandramaland

Boatyard!!!! I am already anti social enough with managing BTS in BTS World... catching up on BTS V LIve Run eps... the dramas... you tube... i cannot start trawling Instagram for Racehorse / Pony legs (although what a delight that would be) or looking for cute floofy animal pics!!!!!... but then again... look at this!!! (i know he's not your fave! but.....)

and I was wondering when Toasty LJS would appear in your Racehorse legs train of thought! Surely he has got to be the thoroughbred of them all in the Racehose Legs stakes!!!!

Racehorse Legs!

Bea · 12/07/2019 10:05

Big Love to Are You Human Too! I loved that one!!!!

helloswellow · 12/07/2019 10:46

I watched School 2013 again last night and forgot how ageless LJS is. I oddly miss Kim Woo Bin, I know he took a break (maybe retired?) because of throat cancer but he was always such a good 2ML

bettys · 12/07/2019 11:02

He is ageless!

Racehorse legs is now embedded in my brain as a criteria. I am always cross when stylists put those that have in baggy trousers, it's such a waste Grin

bettys · 12/07/2019 11:03

those that have them

I really enjoyed Are You Human, though there is a slow bit two thirds of the way in if I remember right.

bettys · 12/07/2019 11:06

And of course Seo Kang Joon is in Cheese in the Trap with naughty boy tousled hair but I got cross (along with many others) about the ending of that as they sidelined Park Hae Jin.
