A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 5 (previous threads linked from OP of each preceding thread)

There are suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. Cautionary note: in categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. romance and thriller; supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with blossoming relationship aspects. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier elements. View the categories below as approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg for younger teens.

Comedy (with a side order of absurd)
I picked up a celebrity on the street (Viki)
My Fellow Citizens (Viki)

Crime/Thriller
Healer (Netflix)*
Heartless City (Viki)
He is Psychometric (Viki)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Life on Mars (classy remake of BBC series, Dramafast)
Live (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Suspicious Partner (Netflix)*

Romance - lighter & fluffier
Beating Again (Netflix)
Coffee Prince (Netflix)
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Happy Once Again (Netflix)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
Love from a Star (Netflix)*
Pinocchio (Netflix)
Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)**
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
The Beauty Inside (Viki/Netflix)
The Last Empress (Viki)
Thirty Not Seventeen (Viki)
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (Netflix/Viki)
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)**
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

Romance - heavier weight/more grown up
Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Just Between Lovers (Viki)**
Mr Sunshine (Netflix)
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Red Carpet - film (Netflix, very adult content)
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
The Package (Viki)

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - fluffier
Goblin (Viki)*
I am not a Robot (Netflix)
Legend of the Blue Sea (Viki/Netflix)
While You Were Sleeping (Viki)*

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - darker
Black (Netflix)*
The Guest (Dramafast)
W (Viki & Netflix)*

Zombies
Kingdom (Netflix)*
Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)

Mad as a box of frogs/uncategorisable
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the incessant fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis and other Korean terms of address and honorifics, there are good resources online.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Has she gone properly coco loco?

OP posts:
bettys · 06/07/2019 17:57

Same sister has tried to talk sense in to her but she is clinging on for dear life

bettys · 06/07/2019 17:59

Sane sister

The woman has no self-respect

The titles make out there is loads of Hanky Panky but I bet there is very little. I am hoping dull 2ML runs off with his boss

Bea · 06/07/2019 18:23

looking forward to this!
Seo Kang Joon... Hmmmm! 😍😍😍

bettys · 06/07/2019 18:47

Me too! First ep has dropped in Viki, but no subs yet.

In other news, it has just clicked that Brian in WWW was Left State Councillor aka eeeevil baddie in The Crowned Clown 🤦‍♀️

I know! He’s so affable in this but was sooooo evil in Crowned Clown that I think he must be a decent actor.

Radio Romance is really sweet (I hoping there’s no serial killer subplot just around the corner).

OP posts:
bettys · 06/07/2019 20:44

It is, isn't it? All the leads are really good too.

I have just watched something on iPlayer for the first time in aaaaaages and was so frustrated there was no 10 second rewind/fforward button!

bettys · 06/07/2019 20:47

I bloody love the drama in drama in WWW!!
"I'm pregnant!" "I'm infertile! - I'm telling MIL!! "

boatyardblues · 06/07/2019 21:04

Yeah, the schlocky drama is so funny - as is Scarlet’s inexplicable love for it. You must have got past the scene where she trips the ‘thief’ up. That made me laugh.

OP posts:
bettys · 06/07/2019 21:32

Yes, I love her whole storyline!

boatyardblues · 06/07/2019 22:32

Things are hotting up in Radio Romance. Crazy Kang has started to show his hand at the hospital. Its all rather lovely.

helloswellow · 07/07/2019 06:42

Radio romance is so lovely. It just made me all fuzzy inside. Nothing life changing but just a good thing, done well.

I love Scarlett in WWW, I'm only on episode 4/5 and so far she's one of my favourites in the show. She's really well written and the actress is v good at exploring how complex she is.

boatyardblues · 07/07/2019 07:12

I think WWW is cracking all round. There was more insight into ML this week, which made him much more interesting.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 07/07/2019 07:14

I also love Scarlet’s gentle, sensitive, unworldly ‘project’ as he brings out a different side of her.

I started Radio Romance a while back... I enjoyed it but I got waylaid by and distracted by something else!.... I really should keep a note of what I'm watching! 😂

Bea · 07/07/2019 08:24

Aha! I got distracted by Psychometric!... I looked it up!.... We have created A LOT! 😱😂 Of Drama threads! 😂 😂 😂

Bea · 07/07/2019 08:33

Oooo! Watcher... EP 1... Subs up!.... I'll be watching later tonight! Got a busy day today!!

boatyardblues · 07/07/2019 09:04

Anyone else noticed that, with more of is subscribing to Viki and Netflix starting to commission/stream weekly airing content, we are effectively running a shadow kdrama ‘water cooler’ thread tracking the weekly schedule. At the start it was about finding the gems in amongst the boxset mountain and sharing our bounty. I wonder if this is a wider trend with streaming services, to hook you in with drip-fed content.

OP posts:
bettys · 07/07/2019 09:29

That would make sense, as once you've watched all the boxsets you like you go off somewhere else, don't you? eg cancelling Now subscription once Game of Thrones finished, so a combination of new boxsets arriving and weekly series keeps you hooked, and paying for it

Article on Netflix expanding in UK

bettys · 07/07/2019 09:38

Also meant to add this link about streaming services becoming more expensive and competitive

The way people view content has shifted massively over the last few years. As a household with very different viewing tastes we subscribe to 7 different viewing platforms Shock including paying the tv license

boatyardblues · 07/07/2019 09:53

Yeah, I don’t feel I get value for money for my TV licence because I rarely watch terrestrial channels any more. It was weird going back to C4 for the start of the new season of Handmaids Tale and have to ffwd through ads for the first time in about 18 months.

OP posts:
Bea · 07/07/2019 10:54

I was thinking this too... Our shift in kdrama habits... We started off with binges... Whole seasons and now we're stuck in waiting for eps and subs to drop!... I'm debating on waiting for loads of watcher to drop then binge!... Had a sneak peek this morning! (but not doing a bettys!... i. e.... Watching without subs! 😭😱).... And it looks goooooood!! 😍😍😍👌

boatyardblues · 07/07/2019 11:15

It doesn’t help that we have collectively got suckered into watching weekly and there’s an element of keeping up with the Joneses if we want to discuss in real time.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 07/07/2019 11:17

By the way, I’m more than half way through and think Radio Romance should go on the opening post list. It’s perfect competent showcase kdrama and, so far, suitable for younger teens (face slapping might be an issue).
