A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 5 (previous threads linked from OP of each preceding thread)

There are suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. Cautionary note: in categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. romance and thriller; supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with blossoming relationship aspects. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier elements. View the categories below as approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg for younger teens.

Comedy (with a side order of absurd)
I picked up a celebrity on the street (Viki)
My Fellow Citizens (Viki)

Crime/Thriller
Healer (Netflix)*
Heartless City (Viki)
He is Psychometric (Viki)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Life on Mars (classy remake of BBC series, Dramafast)
Live (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Suspicious Partner (Netflix)*

Romance - lighter & fluffier
Beating Again (Netflix)
Coffee Prince (Netflix)
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Happy Once Again (Netflix)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
Love from a Star (Netflix)*
Pinocchio (Netflix)
Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)**
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
The Beauty Inside (Viki/Netflix)
The Last Empress (Viki)
Thirty Not Seventeen (Viki)
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (Netflix/Viki)
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)**
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

Romance - heavier weight/more grown up
Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Just Between Lovers (Viki)**
Mr Sunshine (Netflix)
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Red Carpet - film (Netflix, very adult content)
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
The Package (Viki)

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - fluffier
Goblin (Viki)*
I am not a Robot (Netflix)
Legend of the Blue Sea (Viki/Netflix)
While You Were Sleeping (Viki)*

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - darker
Black (Netflix)*
The Guest (Dramafast)
W (Viki & Netflix)*

Zombies
Kingdom (Netflix)*
Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)

Mad as a box of frogs/uncategorisable
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the incessant fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis and other Korean terms of address and honorifics, there are good resources online.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I am 😲 at how wealthy they are. There seems to be a lot of money in advertisements. TV actors here, even top ones, don’t make anything like that kind of money.

News articles have been digging up her past relationships with Mr Sunshine and Hyun Bin

I think its easy for us to forget how big the regional markets are in the far east. Wiki says Descendants of the Sun has been downloaded/streamed over 2bn times. That’s mind-blowing when compared to “good” ratings/viewing figures in western European countries. Song Kye Hyo has a massive following & recognition in China, so I can easily believe that advertising contracts are very lucrative.

Finally caught up with Angel - had to wait for the subs really as there's a lot of exposition I couldn't understand. I really don't know how they are going to resolve the storyline with a happy ending, but I'm sure they will somehow with a twist I haven't thought of.

I really didn't like the half dalmation dress - looked like a draped Cruella de Vil style dead dog over her shoulder. Loved the green shaded blouse and skirt though.

Oi Bea!! and anyone else who has seen The Guardians on Netflix ....

I’m on ep 2 and a little bit confused as quite frankly subs are not up to Viki standards.
Has Kim Young Kwan (tall gourmet prosecutor) been a secret undercover goodie all the way along?

boatyardblues · 30/06/2019 10:00

I must have left viki running on the Apple box when I switched the telly off last week. Viki thinks I’m further ahead than I am & I’m totally lost. Which episode had the kidnap and ended with the dodgy special effects?

OP posts:
bettys · 30/06/2019 10:13

Ep 20 ended with the dodge special effects 😇🧚‍♂️

boatyardblues · 30/06/2019 10:33

That explains it! Viki started me on ep 23 and I couldn’t make head nor tail of it. 😆

Bettys!... 😂😂... Guardians.... I'm not telling you... It all slowly reveals itself!... Just keep going!... 👍😂😍

Bea · 30/06/2019 11:49

... But it's all good!! 😂

bettys · 30/06/2019 18:05

Good to know! I found the first few episodes quite hard to get through for some reason

bettys · 30/06/2019 20:13

On ep 5 of Guardians now and thoroughly enjoying it! Kim Young Kwan is deliciously two-faced, Gunner Jang is soooooeeeevil, it has the bonkers lady director from HPL as an inspector and am rooting for cop on the run with her bad ass ways 👍

bettys · 30/06/2019 20:14

Oh and fab funny ghost from Oh MY GHost too.

Bea · 30/06/2019 21:40

Bettys!.... Ooooo! I'm glad you're getting into it now!!... Yes! Mad mother from HPL and she was divorcee from Romance Bonus Book too!
Kim Young Kwan is fab in it! You can't quite figure him out!
Yes! And evil school boy! 😱😱😱 And even more evil dad (who's got a face in need of a slapping!!) are just sooooo baaaaad!

bettys · 30/06/2019 21:51

Oooohhh of course!!! The fab divorcee from Romance IABB! Knew I liked her from other stuff when I saw her in HPL just couldn't place her 😉👍

bettys · 30/06/2019 21:53

Kim Young Kwan has zoomed ahead of Choi Jin Hyuk in the long legged good looking ML stakes

Bea · 30/06/2019 22:16

Bettys! 😂 😂 😂 😂 I love him in The Guardian!... Just.. Wait...!!.....

boatyardblues · 30/06/2019 22:27

Anyone else finding Diana’s Old Country Roses pattern teaset (by Royal Albert) really distracting in Absolute Boyfriend? My Mum inherited my Nan’s & Mum used it if we had people round for tea when I was a kid. It keeps pulling me out of kdrama mode.

OP posts:
Bea · 30/06/2019 22:29

Boatyard!... I thought that too! I love China and I'm sure I've got that pattern! 😂 😂 😂

bettys · 30/06/2019 22:39

Aaaah I’ve got a Royal Albert teaset somewhere too - not that pattern though......well spotted boatyard.

boatyardblues · 30/06/2019 22:53

I had to google for the name, but I’d recognise it anywhere.

I have my Mum’s very expensive Spode dinner service boxed in the loft. It’s beautiful, but not dishwasher safe and, to be honest, the dinner plates are on the small size by modern standards. Posh dinner parties have gone the way of vinyl and kipper ties, so we have no use for it but I can’t bear to sell it. 🤷‍♂️

OP posts:
bettys · 30/06/2019 23:11

Snap! I have my mum’s dinner service (can’t remember if it’s Spode or wedgewood) & about 3 tea sets stored away but they just don’t get used as they won’t go in the dishwasher & we don’t have dinner parties any more. I do try & use the lovely 60s sherry glasses at Christmas though.

We still have vinyl that we listen to.

bettys · 30/06/2019 23:12

But no kipper ties 🤣🤣

boatyardblues · 01/07/2019 00:04

I just rewatched my favourite bits of WWW ep 8. The romance is interesting - big age difference, different outlooks and aspirations. I’m unsure how they’ll play it, but I am more than happy to go with the flow.

Been catching up on Angel because I woke up stupidly early. It is still lovely but I feel like it has gone slightly off the boil.

One Spring Night is currently my favourite - my patience with the slow start is definitely being rewarded. WWWcurrently my second fave.

OP posts:
bettys · 01/07/2019 10:04

Agree Angel has slowed down somewhat. Still lovely though.

My current favourite is Absolute Boyfriend . Sooooo looking forward to Hotel del Luna (July 13th Sat Sun) and When The Devil Calls Your Name (July 31st Wed Thurs)

Current binge-watch Guardians is very enjoyable.

Here's what's coming up in July
