Hail survivors of The Battle of Winterfell.

The 'mysterious' episode 4 premieres tonight.

Who will be with us at 2am?

I am desperate to find out if Arya's kill is openly discussed and acknowledged, or does Bran take the credit, or does it remain a mystery.

Given Emilia Clarke has said Episode 5 is the one for which we will need 'bigger television screens' what will lead up to it?

Even Missandei’s death scene just had me thinking, so she’s stood next to Cersei and knows she going to die, why not grab Cersei and jump??*

I don't think that's very realistic! Bit harsh to expect to do that in the situation she's in.

Honeyroar · 07/05/2019 16:05

I don't quite understand why Dany rode her dragon straight at Euron after he shot her dragon. She's lucky he didn't kill the remaining dragon too (don't understand why he didn't!). And that dragon must be dead, he was bleeding badly from the first shot and the second "arrow" pretty much split his head in two.

I don't understand why Sam and Gilly went North. What would be there for them there? Sam would surely go to his family seat.

I don't understand why everyone left Jon and didn't help him in the fight against Cersei? One minute everyone was celebrating how wonderful he was, the next minute it was "see ya, we've had our battle win, now we're off".

Not sure what I feel about Jaime and what happened or what his plans are.

Re Dany. So many times in her story she's fallen from the heights of power and landed alone, yet has clawed her way back. She looks like she's on a downward slope.

Jon is a bit hot and cold re Dany. He puts his honour and "missions" ahead of his relationships. He was the same with Ygritte, never really gave her 100%.

I didn't feel much about Missandrei dying. She's never done much other than announce Dany's titles. Greyworm will be on a revenge trip now.

Anyway. I enjoyed the episode. I cheated on my husband, watched it without him when I said I'd wait until I got home (weds). But I kept stumbling over spoiler comments online and then it came on HBO last night in my hotel room, so I couldn't resist.

Yes definitely. Not only would she then have got everyone killed right there and then including the man she loves and the woman who gave her her freedom, but she was in shackles and I imagine it would be very difficult to grab a woman surrounded by armed guards whilst in chains!

I love the Jon/Sansa one Elspeth.

Team Sansa here.

Hp737 · 07/05/2019 16:57

@LaurieMarlow re why rhaegar made the puzzling choice to marry Lyanna and risk pissing others off/ruin political alliances, I think GRRM used as inspiration the marriage of Edward IV and Elizabeth woodville during the wars of the roses, despite having agreed to marry a princess of France in order to make an alliance. (Harking back to my history degree now so hope I got the details right!) I always found it fascinating as historians still debate why he made such a dick move, but in a way it’s that human side of history- people, especially powerful ones, don’t always act rationally (and often make massive fails!)
Anyway that’s just an anecdote but I believe GRRM was heavily influenced by real life british history when plotting GoT. As crazy as the rhaegar love story is, truth is stranger than fiction and all that !

LaurieMarlow · 07/05/2019 17:20

Yeah I agree with all that. I guess what I’d really like is to see how his motivations unfolded. The Rhaegar we are told about in the books is both smart and decent. I want to know how that all unravelled when he fell in love with Lyanna.

We won’t get it in this show. Maybe one of the flashbacks will cover Robert’s Rebellion. I’d be more interested in that than endless Targaryen ancestors.

ElspethFlashman · 07/05/2019 17:32

Wasn't he married already? Or was the marriage after his wife was murdered by the Mountain?

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/05/2019 17:33

It was before Elia was killed. He had it annulled and married Lyanna.

LaurieMarlow · 07/05/2019 17:38

How do you sell that to the Martell family, your most important allies?!?!

Or did he just do it regardless? How did they react? Poor Elia. And then she was destroyed by the Mountain.Sad

I want the detail dammit.

LaurieMarlow · 07/05/2019 17:38

The memes are great. Especially the second one Grin

LaurieMarlow · 07/05/2019 17:42

Sansa best friend was Jeyne Poole. Once Sansa got bored of her, Jeyne was sent to a brothel and in the books forced to marry Ramsey pretending to be Sansa. Not sure about the show.

Sorry just saw this. It’s an enormous leap to suggest Sansa had any agency over the fate of Jeyne Poole. That’s ridiculous.

Little finger basically sold her as a sex slave after her father was killed. That’s not sansa’s fault.

ElspethFlashman · 07/05/2019 17:48

How could it be annulled when he had 2 kids with her?!

I'm drawing a total blank on that story.

SweetSummerchild · 07/05/2019 17:52

Little finger basically sold her as a sex slave after her father was killed. That’s not sansa’s fault.

My understanding was that Sansa had been led to believe that Jeyne was to be reunited with her father who Sansa never realised was dead. She was quite happy that Jeyne was no longer hysterically crying in her room where the Hound had put her during the massacre, but that’s different from her actively trying to get rid of her.

itswinetime · 07/05/2019 17:54

How could it be annulled when he had 2 kids with her?!

It hasn't been explained I don't think just what bran saw in his vision and what Sam read in the book. Everyone seems to have just accepted it so I don't think any explanation is coming in terms of the show unless I have forgotten something!

SweetSummerchild · 07/05/2019 17:56

ElspethFlashman don’t go there.

There was so much wrong with that storyline last season. No, the marriage could not have been annulled. Not to mention the fact that Rhaegar already had a son called Aegon. Why would Lyanna name her baby the same name as Rhaegar’s first son?

LaurieMarlow · 07/05/2019 17:59

How could it be annulled when he had 2 kids with her?

Well exactly. Yet we’re led to believe that the Rhaegar/Lyanna marriage was legit.

I want to know how that was all squared.

I think the Targaryens had some form for bigamous marriages, but only amongst themselves and their cadet branches (though I’m hazy on the details)

It’s such a big fuck you to the Martells. How could it even be countenanced?

HidCat · 07/05/2019 17:59

I love reading the theories and find everyone's frustrations quite amusing. If all loose ends were tied up by now we'd have two very long and boring final episodes!

I'm really intrigued to see how Sansa manipulates everything; I think she'll remain in Winterfell or die though. I also keep wondering whether there are anymore dragon eggs to be hatched. If all Danny's Dragons were male will they have laid any? Not sure of the dragon lore here sorry.

JasperRising · 07/05/2019 18:04

The annulment thing despite having children has always bugged me about the show. I suspect the book will have more lore/precedent behind it if it does the same thing.

The two Aegons thing has never bothered me because medieval nobleman often had a second son after the death of the first who was given the same name (and Lyanna gave birth after the first Aegon was murdered). There are even cases of children by a second wife having the same name as a living child by the first wife.

agirlhasnonameX · 07/05/2019 18:07

I'm not sure if this is theory or confirmed as can't remember where I read this, but apparently Rhaegar left with Lyanna because he was so convinced that he would sire TPTWP, but since none of his children where, thought that it was down to Elia being an unsuitable match.

all Danny's Dragons were male will they have laid any? Not sure of the dragon lore here sorry.
Dragons are sexless.

SweetSummerchild · 07/05/2019 18:08

I don’t think the books will have Jon as a legitimate Targaryan. His identity as Lyanna and Rhaegar’s son will be made known, but the second Dance of the Dragons in terms of ‘rightful heir to the throne’ will be between Dany and fAegon.

SweetSummerchild · 07/05/2019 18:10

agirlhasnonameX Rhaegar was obsessed with prophecy and believed the ‘dragon must have three heads’. He wanted a third child but Elia Martell was ‘delicate’ and would not have been able to bear more children.

agirlhasnonameX · 07/05/2019 18:12

SweetSummerchild thank you that's what I'm thinking of. I totally forgot she was too ill to have any more.

cottonwoolmouth · 07/05/2019 18:18

Not two flying fucks were given. Maybe they thought ‘not my circus, not my monkeys’....

I don’t think it’s the last of Tormond and ghost. I mean it cant be.. can it??

LunaMay · 07/05/2019 18:21

Have we found out why there must always be a Stark at Winterfell? Was that more a book thing?
