A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 4 (previous threads linked from OP of this one)

Some suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired:

Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Black (Netflix)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Goblin (Viki)
Healer (Netflix)*
He is Psychometric (Viki)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Just Between Lovers (Viki)*
Last Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)
Live (Netflix)
Love from a Star (netflix)*
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Pinocchio (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)*
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)
Suspicious Partner (netflix)*
W (Viki & Netflix)*
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)*
While You Were Sleeping (viki)*
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis try this helpful guide to Korean terms of address and honorifics.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I'm thinking of checking into a teavelodge down the road!

Ha ha ha. That’s the spirit!

Two abductors with differing motivations, I agree.

Cheshire - I think you mean Kingdom on Netflix with Bae Doona. Betty really rates it. I didn’t get past the first “RAR!” which made me spill my tea. DH told me I should turn it off as it was unwise to watch it before bed. I keep meaning to go back as my friend rated it too, but so much to watch!

I LOVED KIngdom plus the ML is the bakery owner fromAntique 😉 BUt then I really like that kind of thing, as just annoyed the series was so short, typical Netflix tactics

Yes pls Cheshire for linky 👍

I just bought a pile of random Korean and Japanese films for £1 each in the charity shop just now. Will provide more details when I get home.

I'm feeling tempted with a Viki subscription. I picked up that they were using the name in subtitles in Healer while sunbae was said. Which is quite annoying, and it would be really interesting to see the swaps between formal and informal.

DD has now started three series, Abyss , weight lifting fairy and dream high. I liked the look of WLF but she's got sucked into dream high today.

Bea, I hope the tummy bug stays away.

boatyardblues · 01/06/2019 17:15

WLF definitely superior to Abyss. Haven’t seen the other one.

I would say Viki is worth it. It’s a nominal amount and there is a lot of content on there. The Viki originals are decent, so its worth paying for the second level subscription.

Totes random, I stumbled on this rather good gayageum Jimi Hendrix cover on YouTube whilst googling to find out what a gayageum was: m.youtube.com/watch?v=NfOHjeI-Bns

boatyardblues · 01/06/2019 21:08

I’m dabbling/sampling at the mo and the gayageum is plot-relevant in The Contracted Husband Mr Oh on Netflix. It’s pretty likeable.

Also, did one of you here tip your hat at me on the Rocketman thread under a different name? If not, there’s another KJW fan on the boards.

Talking to myself tonight I see - Betty’s on the razz and Bea getting an early night.

The robot boyf in Absolute Boyfriend is credited in Antique Bakery. He must have been one of the boy children because he would have been 10 then.

It was indeed The Kingdom, thanks.

boatyardblues · 01/06/2019 23:49

Evening Cheshire. I thought it was just me around - good to see you.

How are you finging Kingdom? As good as Betty said? They have a second series in production.

OP posts:
CheshireChat · 02/06/2019 00:07

Evening, blues (or should I call you boaty)

Hah, I just managed to get everyone else settled, DS is being a pain and DP is off work sick and he definitely will be unwell unless he stops nagging me Angry.

Not wasting a good series when I'm this tired, I'll be watching the witch trial one, it's not that promising tbh.

CheshireChat · 02/06/2019 00:20

@bettys I've sent you the link, forgot to mention that the ad blocker browser means you don't get notifications and shit like that.

boatyardblues I'm quite envious of your charity shop haul, I've never seen anything similar around here. I managed to get some lovely calligraphy artwork once though .

boatyardblues · 02/06/2019 00:31

Don’t be too envious. They could all be utter shite. Just grabbed them from the hall. I have:

Bichunmoo: Warrior of Virtue. Korean. Blurb says its in the Crouching Tiger mould and was a box office smash in Korea.

Fighter in the Wind. Korean & Japanese with English subs, about a Korean taekwondo champ in Japan after WW2. Based on a manga series.

Death Note. Based on hit supernatural action mystery manga. Japanese.

Honestly, I was only killing 5 mins before an appointment so just piled them on the desk and slapped my cash down. I didn’t even read the blurb. I’m working on a catch and release basis. If they are rubbish, I’ll re-donate them. If they are OK, I have some colleagues and a friend who woukd be interesting in borrowing them. They were £3.50 all in, so I thought it was worth a punt.

OP posts:
CheshireChat · 02/06/2019 00:36

I can tell you're not an anime fan Wink, Death Note is a cult classic at this point, Netflix have done their own Americanised version which was utterly trash.

The movies are pretty good, first one in particular as the original material is a bit iffy at times afterwards.

boatyardblues · 02/06/2019 00:36

The FL’s mother and brother in The Contracted Husband Mr Oh are absolutely hateful. I really hope they get a fitting punishment.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 02/06/2019 00:37

Ah, that was a lucky haul then. Right place, right time.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 02/06/2019 00:40

Death Note was an extra 50p because its a two-disk special limited edition. Sounds like I could probably ebay it.

OP posts:
CheshireChat · 02/06/2019 00:40

It's worth a watch just to know what the hype is about. A bit like Dexter I guess

Can't describe just how bad the Netflix remake is though

CheshireChat · 02/06/2019 00:44

Ooh, some of those are collector items and if it has extra footage it's quite likely to find people interested in it.

I'm pretty sure Death Note is still on Crunchyroll so there's ongoing interest.

boatyardblues · 02/06/2019 00:50

It includes a 24 page ‘Death Note’ book, if that helps? Will definitely give it a go.
