@hopefullybettersoon
I thought that was the moment at which she knew it was impossible, though I actually think she knew all along. She's accepting at the end because she's always known.

RuffleCrow · 08/04/2019 19:30

Maybe it was her way of saying "i knew you wanted me right from the start"? Because no-one would react that way to someone walking away unless they already had strong feelings.

RuffleCrow · 08/04/2019 19:31

That was @hopefullybetter btw

"Buck up, smile, charm, off we go. We'll be ok"

MaGratgarlik1983 · 08/04/2019 19:54

Arggh I know I should love the finale as it's so well written and poetic, and I do, but argh I really really wanted them to somehow make it work out between them. It's just so sad that they can't even be friends now?! And he loves her too, but not enough. We will never know about his back story, what happened to draw him to the priesthood, all his many previous relationships, why he thought he could trust himself to drink with her and firm a friendship when he couldn't resist in the end, how it went from passionate kissing before the wedding to saying goodbye at the bus stop. Argh! In reality, how long could they keep away from each other?? I may have to reconstruct their future in my head!!

Was that also a reflection of a scene from the first episode? Dad says it to FB, then she says it to him in the last one

merrymouse · 08/04/2019 19:57

I think the ‘fuck you’ bit is

  1. just their way of talking to each other - one of the reasons she likes him is that he is ‘sweary’, particularly in the smoking scene.
  2. The ‘me or God’ bit is about his feelings AND the choice he has to make, so when it’s clear he hasn’t made the choice yet she says ‘fuck you’.

Was that also a reflection of a scene from the first episode? Yes, FB used her dad's words to her at the funeral, back at him.

Tinkoschminko · 08/04/2019 20:03

I’m kind of glad she was the one who was vulnerable. She was allowing that to happen. That’s why the line about him not replying and just leaving it out there when she said she loves him felt quite empowered. That was her breakthrough and whatever his reaction would pale in comparison
to the significance of that.

XXcstatic · 08/04/2019 20:05

The ‘me or God’ bit is about his feelings AND the choice he has to make, so when it’s clear he hasn’t made the choice yet she says ‘fuck you’

I have just rewatched and I think this is the moment she realises he has made up his mind, and he won't be leaving the church. After that, when she is looking at him, her expression is wistful and slightly detached.

ComputerSaysMo · 08/04/2019 20:18

Poor Flea. Always good enough for the shag, but as soon as she thinks she’s really moved someone she gets put back in her place. Remember when she thought Arsehole Guy was developing actual feelings for her just before the in S1?

merrymouse · 08/04/2019 20:22

I’m reconciling myself to the ending more. I think his final ‘I love you too’ is as far as the relationship could go within the constraints of a 6 x 25 min episode series.

(Although obviously I’d love to meet all the characters again)

Wheresmyvagina · 08/04/2019 20:24

When they first met at the dinner party he follows her out for a ciggy and tries to chat to her. She walks off and he says 'fuck you then' and she turns and gives him this smile...she was echoing that

huhpuh · 08/04/2019 20:34

There’s no way he’s going to stay away....at the bus stop, when he takes her hand, there’s a moment where he looks like he’s going to kiss her. She pulls back. It’s left open so we can take from it what we want.

huhpuh · 08/04/2019 20:35

She pulls her hand back, that should say. Way too over invested!

SlightlySleepy · 08/04/2019 20:39

I'm surprised people aren't making more of the god mother being unable to recall the name of the man she's about to marry

How absolutely humiliating for him

Does GM not even really see him as a real person, just what he represents? (Is she really after his money?)

I think it was just a funny thing for the audience, highlighting the fact that he doesn't have a name.

merrymouse · 08/04/2019 20:41

Just thought - much easier to do a third series if FB isn’t happily wondering of into the sunset with HP - where would you go from there?

merrymouse · 08/04/2019 20:44

Wandering

BoglingToAswad · 08/04/2019 20:54

I don't even need a third series, I would be happy if she Ricky Gervais'd it and did a one off special where they waltz off into the sunset

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 20:55

A third series might be good but sometimes they do this and it's disappointing. (Plus OC now has an Oscar and might be making more films now etc?)

Better to leave on a high , maybe a Christmas special like 'the Office did ?
Christmas is important for priests.

I can imagine step mum doing a 'religious painting' for the church raffle!

FB gets a nice moral normal bf then hot priest shows up?

BoglingToAswad · 08/04/2019 20:57

@The80sweregreat great minds think alike Grin

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 21:02

I was typing that then I read your post! Sorry!
Mind you, it might end up like the office one and we would still be disappointed maybe?
FB is more unpredictable than that.
It would have to be different to the usual follow up somehow?

CountFosco · 08/04/2019 21:07

Did anyone notice she didn't talk to us when she was with HP in the last episode?

Interesting to hear godmother's comment about looking after father in old age - she is 20 years younger?

28 years in real life.
