Sorry, forgot existence of Battersea/Clapham/Wandsworth - I think it could be set there (plenty of big old houses), but on balance, given actual filming locations they are northerners.

RosaWaiting · 09/04/2019 19:48

Thanks Merry

if they bought the house in the 80s/90s, they wouldn't necessarily have bought something fashionable or pricey? I admit I am not as good at detail as most posters, so I have no idea what either parent did for a living.

Tinkoschminko · 09/04/2019 20:09

Was trying to work out, given that FB’s mum had a double mastectomy what, if anything, that said about the intentions of the statue.

SavageBeauty73 · 09/04/2019 20:15

Her cafe was in York Rise (NW5) and she walks down Croftdown Road. I grew up there so it was lovely to see.

I miss it already!!!

ADarkandStormyKnight · 09/04/2019 20:23

OMG! yes - allowing FB to reclaim her memory of her mother before the masectomy.

grumiosmum · 09/04/2019 20:37

The name Fleabag is surely derived from Phoebe, no?

I can imagine that's what your school mates might have called you ...

bookworm14 · 09/04/2019 20:39

I assumed her real name was Phoebe too.

Ella1980 · 09/04/2019 20:53

The shy wave to the camera at the end was poignant for me. She never got to say goodbye to Boo who was her RL best friend (possibly lover?) but yet she acknowledges "us" in a final farewell.

She can't have a romantic relationship with the priest, but he has given her hope that she can move on one day and is capable of being loved.

Perhaps for her saying goodbye to "us" is showing us she's ready to face the world again?

jalopy · 09/04/2019 20:59

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but I thought the priest looked like Declan Donnelly.

Tinkoschminko · 09/04/2019 21:31

It was so perfect. But if the same episode with an alternative ending we’re to appear on iPlayer, I wouldn’t be at all disappointed.

ThanksItHasPockets · 09/04/2019 21:46

jalopy it’s been observed that he looks like both Ant and Dec simultaneously Grin

Janus · 09/04/2019 21:48

Rage thank you so much for your marvellous summary! I am a bit embarrassed to say I found it on Amazon Prime at about 10.30am here so I paid the nominal fee and watched it all again!! Think I may watch it again tonight too!! I liked your version of it all and thank you for taking the time to write it all out.
I have to say I’ve thought about this episode literally all day.
I can only hope Killing Eve is as good as the first series but I don’t think PWB will disappoint!

Sharptic · 09/04/2019 21:50

Have just binge watched the second series .... you all observe so much more than me, I'm going to watch it again. Loved it though, and the priest wow 🥰

I have been googling the priest as I'd never heard of Andrew Scott before, turns out he's gay irl. Just goes to show how good his acting skills are as I could feel their chemistry coming through the screen, brilliant stuff.

The love between the sister's was portrayed so well.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 09/04/2019 21:55

I always assumed Fleas real name would be Phoebe.

I also didn't really think much of the statue being pre-mastectomy mum. Although post mastectomy, in the hands of God Mother... could be used for all sorts of cruel knife twists.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 09/04/2019 22:01

You are welcome janus Glad you got to see it all.
I loved Killing Eve - I think I liked the Russian handler the best. As far as I know PWB is only involved as exec prod - so another writer will have written series 2. It would have been nice had PWB been script supervisor or something (I know Ricky Gervais did some of that for Phone Shop, when they do not write but they do tighten up the script after it's been written) but isn't exec producer one of those title for the sake of it credits? Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant have them for Santa Clarita Diet but I thought they were usually given to any main cast member who wanted one!
I adore Killing Eve for introducing me to the band Cigarettes After Sex. K was used in the opening to one of the episodes.

NorthernGravy · 09/04/2019 22:18

I’m now doubting myself and my obsession with FB and the priest. Am I turning into a cliche that goes on about Poldark/ Mr Darcey/ even 50 Fucking Shades, all of which I detest? Why did it hit me?

I felt like this with the Before Sunrise/ Before Sunset (but not the last one) and with His Dark Materials.

Tinkoschminko · 09/04/2019 22:21

Exactly DSHathaway I’d love to know the origin story.

I wouldn’t have minded a Mum flashback - just one. I think maybe with FB’s newly unearthed sense of her emotional capabilities, I’d have like to have seen her mum. By the end, I was crying on her behalf over her mum, not Boo or HP.

Bouledeneige · 09/04/2019 22:35

Spent 45 minutes in the car on a drive discussing FB with DD18 and the interpretations and implications raised by MN. We have our own ideas which will drive a second viewing of the whole of series 2. But just for the record, we will hear no wrong of HP. He's a good and loving man and as confused as FB. All love for the writer and the beauty of the performances. All of them rock.

RuffleCrow · 09/04/2019 22:45

Northern, it's ok. It's completely normal and rather cool to be obsessed with FB and the Priest and Before Sunrise/Sunset. I decided.

This is because both avoid shitty cliches and are instead about a 3 dimensional (5 dimensional) take on the human experience of love.

That scene in the record store in Vienna with Celine & Jessie will stay with me forever because it touched my soul - like poetry. Same with FB at the bus stop.

Fleabag Gin

BubbleandSqueeeek · 09/04/2019 22:45

Just caught up after avoiding spoilers. Cried silent tears. I wanted them to be together but understand why the actress who plays Claire said the ending was 'poetic'. It was just a wonderful, clever, multi layered series and I'm ridiculously sad it's over.

Best bit for me was the love between FB and Claire. 'The only person I'd run through an airport for is you' was said with both adoration and annoyance, as if loving FB was a tad inconvenient at times but unavoidable. It was just marvellous.

NorthernGravy · 09/04/2019 22:50

Yes RuffleCrow- the record store is one of the most perfect scenes ever. FB and HP were so similar.

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 09/04/2019 22:57

Isn't it amazing the pain we feel, the hurt and loss and the LOVE.

KittyWindbag · 09/04/2019 23:02

Frankie Boyle has just posted a really interesting video on instagram about his reaction to fleabag, the ending and what he thinks it’s about. I’m a big fan of Frankie’s and he has a sensitive and thoughtful bit to say on it. Go seek it out!

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 09/04/2019 23:15

Thanks kitty. God I think I've just realised I have an intimacy personality disorder which may be why I find it so raw.
