I didn't see the statue as really awful as surely their mum allowed herself to be sculpted? They were friends once; maybe she was all for it as opposed to being sculpted without her knowledge? If that's the case then yes, awful, but I took it that mum knew about it? Modelled for her once?
Again, we don't know. She might have been lying though? Wouldn't put it past her either!
She isn't a fan of FB and that would be cruel but just the sort of thing she would lie about?

RhymingRabbit · 09/04/2019 14:23

@Bertrand, I think if ESM had left it at "she was modelled on your mum" it could actually have been a lovely moment. But it was when she said it was nice to have her in the house again... It felt so proprietorial and pointed.

NewAccount270219 · 09/04/2019 14:25

It was 'nice to have her on her shelf, where she belongs', wasn't it? Which yes, felt nasty - let's just put your dead mum safely out of the way, in storage

The80sweregreat · 09/04/2019 14:25

She said ' I'll put it back on the shelf' but FB stole it back again once she knew who it was.
She doesn't want her mum in the same house as step mum. I can't blame her!

XXcstatic · 09/04/2019 14:31

The ESM's friendship with FB's mother may have been genuine. It's hard to imagine the mother modelling nude for her if it wasn't.

One of the things I like about FB is its acknowledgement that even people who are awful in some ways - like Martin - have genuine insights and emotions.

NewAccount270219 · 09/04/2019 14:32

The mother did - presumably - choose ESM as godmother to her children.

The80sweregreat · 09/04/2019 14:34

Yes, PWB doesn't make everyone really horrible all the time. even God-mum could be nice sometimes.

Sian Clifford Interview in Grazia

Great interview with Sian!

merrymouse · 09/04/2019 14:51

Agree - FB may not be able to see the Godmother's redeeming features from her perspective, but that doesn't mean that she has none - this is pretty much what the father explains in the attic.

NewAccount270219 · 09/04/2019 15:01

The dynamic between ESM and the mother must have been interesting, as it was a student/teacher friendship with a big age gap. We assume that ESM is jealous of the mother, but she may also be jealous of Fleabag/Claire, as the 'real' daughters of a mother figure to her - hence how proprietal she is over the mother?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 09/04/2019 15:04

It's interesting that so many on this thread have mentioned FB "talking to us".
Her very first monologue describing her evening with Arsehole Guy not only very definitely broke the 4th wall, it also put in an RSJ and knocked through to the next room, But despite this, I felt that most of her "asides" were her internal thoughts to herself.
I mean, we all chat to ourselves- the drinks with Hot Misogynist ...
I'm very good at it (no he's not) I'm really very good at it (I bet he's not) is the sort of internal conversation I have with myself. (but normally with Lukewarm Misogynists )
The brief glances to camera were "see?"moments..

Strangely this meant that when she looked very directly at camera at the very end, shook her head, and then waved goodbye, it really hit me, because although I was watching FB I didn't really feel her interacting with me until then

NewAccount270219 · 09/04/2019 15:07

On a more prosaic level: DH and I had to pause the TV for a quick discussion of how many millions of pounds the dad's house - in central London, with that garden - would be worth

ADarkandStormyKnight · 09/04/2019 15:14

The art thing is interesting. Stepmother created a sculpture of the mother with no arms, head or legs, not even recognisable as the person she represents. You wonder what she was doing with the painting of the girsls? Maybe getting them where she wants them, with FB unable to see her.

merrymouse · 09/04/2019 15:16

I suspect the garden and wedding interiors weren't filmed at the front door house.

Within the world of the story, I think that the house is in a part of London that would have been very inexpensive in the 80's - like Kensal Rise or Tooting.

XXcstatic · 09/04/2019 15:19

The arsehole guy monologue also makes it pretty unlikely that FB's asides to camera as supposed to be her talking to her mother, as some have suggested. I mean, I know they are boho north Londoners but still....Wink

The80sweregreat · 09/04/2019 15:23

I loved the kitchen. Most of these dramas and sit coms have nice big houses and gardens it seems. I have kitchen envy.
Yes, must be worth millions.

XXcstatic · 09/04/2019 15:26

FB is certainly running in Kensal Green cemetery in the first series (E1 or 2, I think), merrymouse

RhymingRabbit · 09/04/2019 15:27

I think the painting can be interpreted in different ways. It could be the way ESM feels about FB's position or dynamic within the family - turning away from them, hiding her true self from them. It could be that she feels shame, embarrassment, anger when she looks at FB so is avoiding her gaze. It could be that she simply wanted to hurt her by erasing her.

The figure of the mother is very typical. No identity beyond that of biology and sex. Fecund and faceless. And also harks back I reckon to the "invisible" chat that FB had with KST character.

howmanyleftfeet · 09/04/2019 15:32

I think she's talking to an audience. She says something like she has "lots of friends" to the therapist and makes it clear she means us.

She has an audience in her head.

So I guess that must mean we are all a figment of Fleabag's imagination?! Grin

howmanyleftfeet · 09/04/2019 15:37

Could be.

Houses on the London road I grew up on were £5k in the early 70s. They're £1.5 to £2 million now. Bonkers!

The80sweregreat · 09/04/2019 15:41

House prices in London are astonishingly expensive.
FB's business rates for her cafe must be eye watering too.

HoraceCope · 09/04/2019 15:41

Sian/Clare said in the Chatty Wednesday she lived in Tooting.

You do realise PWB played no part in Killing Eve 2?

HoraceCope · 09/04/2019 15:42

well £25 for a sandwich, london isnt it?

RuffleCrow · 09/04/2019 15:45

I was just reading an interview with Sian Clifford from the other day where she says neither she, PWB or AS can seem to stop rewatching FB or messaging each other about it. Not out of vanity but just because they also think it's one of the best things they've seen in ages. They're just as bad as us! In fact they probably are some of us Wink Gin

Feel a bit less silly after reading that Grin

XXcstatic · 09/04/2019 15:47

You do realise PWB played no part in Killing Eve 2?

No, she is an executive producer for some episodes.
