All very good, but did anybody else have trouble hearing what they were all saying? I didn't have this issue with the previous series so wondering if they've meddled with the sound somehow? Anybody else find this?

I don't know

I have hated Albert from minute 1

the film Young Victoria also shows Victoria as deciding to defer to him.

re laws, Victoria didn't want women to have the vote because she thought it would undermine their role in the family, amongst other things. I think she was also against the very basic contraception in use at the time, for similar reasons, but I can't recall where I heard that.

I used to work in an old listed building with black railings outside, with gold topped finials (I think that's the word). I was told we were lucky to have them, because after Albert died, Victoria ordered those gold finials to be painted black and most places actually did it.

diddl · 20/04/2019 12:28

I wonder if Albert is just very much of his time.

It does seem plausible though.

But they seemed very codependent-it seems as much as she would give he would readily take-and more besides!

TheweewitchRoz · 20/04/2019 12:37

Agree with you both @diddl and @RosaWaiting but I'm struggling to see the great love story. I haven't liked the character ever either and it just seems like he doesn't like her at all but she's infatuated with him.

diddl · 20/04/2019 12:43

I think that they werre both quite awful people-some of the things that they said about their kids!

I wonder if the thought was that she would have been easy to talk into letting him take over a lot of stuff, but this didn't happen?

RosaWaiting · 20/04/2019 12:43

The reading I did about V&A was so long ago, I can't name any books now, but I have never seen it as a great love story.

in series 1, Victoria looks a portrait of Elizabeth and wonders about reigning alone. I have no idea if there is any truth in her wondering that, but I wish she had. Women's rights might have come about earlier, in fact, if she had gone down that road.

QuiQuaiQuod · 29/04/2019 12:24

Rosa, Re Skerrit: Cholera outbreak. Them moving to the very area, too good to be true love story, knew one of them would cop it!
Miss Ferdinand though, he was pleasing on the eye.
I also wonder why Berties in a kilt. Good actor though isn't he?

Had to keep looking away last night as I have an acute phobia of rodents !

Its turning into a soap opera now with the duchess and Joseph. Cant stand Feodora.

As for Albert....Why bother to get a close to the bone lookalike for Victoria and not Albert? Tom Hughes couldn't look the complete opposite if he tried. He looks like Ron Or is it Russel MAel from Sparks!

desperatehousewife21 · 29/04/2019 14:57

I think he looks fairly like the young Prince Albert I wonder how far into their lives they’re planning on for this series? Will it be like the Netflix The Crown and get in older actors to portray them as 40 year olds? They’d need a slightly more bald Albert then Grin

RosaWaiting · 29/04/2019 15:12

well they won't need a new Albert will they....very easy to make up Tom Hughes to 42.

If they go ahead with the show, then they will need a new Victoria of course. I can see them trying to hide Gemma's lovely baby face but it isn't really working!

Qui you know Ferdinand is Ben Kingsley's son?

For anyone who doesn't mind rodents, there's a funny clip on Twitter of them trying to film that!

sick to death of Feodora. Seems to me that so much of interest happened in the 1840s and they've not really dealt with it.

diddl · 29/04/2019 15:21

"Good actor though isn't he?"

Yes he is.

I also think that him & the girl playing Vicky look quite alike.

The Duchess & Joseph-yawn!

RosaWaiting · 29/04/2019 15:26

*Jenna not Gemma

QuiQuaiQuod · 30/04/2019 16:59

Rosa- yes, I love Ben Kinglsy too, I miss some eye candy on the programme now, apart from my weird liking for Penge Grin.

I miss Rufus Sewell too.

Agree, the Joseph/duchess thing is getting boring.

Hate Lawrence Fox but strangley his character is getting a bit better IMO. Starting to warm to him.

TheweewitchRoz · 30/04/2019 18:07

What's the relevance of the Joseph / Duchess storyline? I find it very boring. I get that we see back stories of some of the other characters but generally that's in relation to how it affects Victoria or the impact / actions on her but these 2 seem entirely separate and it's annoying me!

BitOfFun · 30/04/2019 18:17

I'm not enjoying this series at all. There's no lightness of touch, and all the characters seem mean and disagreeable. We haven't even had any fabulous frocks.

diddl · 30/04/2019 18:18

I know that it was never a documentary, but it has all gone very soapy!

TheweewitchRoz · 30/04/2019 20:02

Agreed @diddl

RosaWaiting · 01/05/2019 15:32

The main enjoyable thing about this series is Lord Palmerston. I loved the exchange with the French King...

King - If I were not a Frenchman, I would wish to be an Englishman.

Palmerston - If I were not an Englishman, I would wish to be....an Englishman.

Grin
kazzaD66 · 01/05/2019 17:33

Rosa Grin agree, Palmerston is the best thing in this series.
I also pine for Lord M - I've loved Rufus Sewell since Middlemarch Blush

Cannot stand the footman and the stupid storyline with the duchess!

RosaWaiting · 01/05/2019 18:03

I do think Penge has some good lines too.

kazzaD66 · 01/05/2019 18:12

Yes, and he's desperate to get rid of the footman Grin

RosaWaiting · 01/05/2019 18:31

I've been really pooped and a bit under the weather so I vaguely recall Penge had a great line on Sunday...but can't actually remember it.

I bet he has mates at Chatsworth!

Random learning points from Victoria...

clearly a lot of viewers on Twitter didn't know the Irish potato famine was real, I mean the circumstances with the price of bread artificially inflated

when Lord M said "any fool can be Prime Minister" my dad found it really odd, so I explained to him about the workings of Parliament back then and he didn't know that either. It did strike me that without historical context, it might seem a bizarre bit of dialogue.

RosaWaiting · 13/05/2019 19:36

what did posters think of the season finale?

I thought it was poor, though I was interested to see the depiction of the Great Exhibition. Also thought Palmerston was very good -worth a spin off, in fact!

I am hoping next series will pick up after Albert's death in 1861 and we won't see any more kid stuff.

QuiQuaiQuod · 15/05/2019 19:06

I love the actor playing young Bertie. He's adorable!

Whats up with Albert? Its not time for him to die yet. and even though the duchess/Joseph story is tedious I wonder if she stays with her son or goes off with him.
Whtever happened to Ernst, Alberts brother? Did he survive the SDT and did the other duchess stay with him in RL?

ConfCall · 11/06/2019 20:56

I’m currently binge watching. It’s soapy nonsense but quite enjoyable. They’ve turned it into a bit of a hagiography of Victoria though - she didn’t care about the Chartists and she was a distant parent.

The best portrayal of Victoria I’ve seen was by Annette Crosbie - some 1970s drama that I watched on dvd a few years ago. I also recall that Felicity Kendall played the adult Princess Vicky really well.
