Am finding it very well written and a departure from other things he's done. Have laughed out loud a few times. Very clever way of writing something moving without being cloying.
Anyone else watching?

Just put it on now. Thanks for the recommendation. Will let you know

The80sweregreat · 09/03/2019 15:21

I liked it but people saying the C word out loud always makes me a bit uneasy. (Any other swear words are ok though! )
The postman was funny and the time he meets Anne at the cemetery was well done and rather sad. The dog is cute.
Only seen the first one.
(just want him to go and do some food shopping. )

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 09/03/2019 15:35

Ah, I am okay with that word but respect your view. When Ashley Jensen used it, I could understand why.
It's interesting how it affects people - I am late 40s and use the word a fair amount Blush but my parents wouldn't.
In Fleabag, it was meant to be the punchline for Andrew Scott's priest character (the dysfunctional family members hear of his estrangement with his brother and go through reasons why...to which the punchline would have been, bearing in mind it was coming from a catholic priest's mouth, 'because he's a c--t' but the BBC vetoed it.
Phoebe WB changed it to 'because he's a paedophile' but I think in this case, the c- word was a better line (even though others will claim swearwords are a cheap laugh).

Hope you enjoy it thanos

I read a review of After Life today and loved the sound of if. I have mixed feelings about Ricky Gervais. I watched a couple of episodes of Derek and thought it was truly awful, but I really enjoyed his last stand up special on Netflix

Thirtyrock39 · 09/03/2019 15:41

Halfway through episode two and proper tears , snot, shoulder shaking crying but then laughing at the same time . I'm enjoying seeing lots of actors from life on the road and derek. Wonder where it's set ?

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 09/03/2019 15:45

contemporary UK, filmed in London, fictional town Tambury
wonder where the beach scene was filmed - that made me cry

I said to DS2 today that however grief stricken my own husband would be if i were die now, , he would still go to the shops and buy some food ( and eat it all!)

Poor dog needs some proper dog food as well.

I feel that Netflix give the writers and actors a lot more leeway with swearing and so on - i just dont like hearing the word said out loud, although when i see it written down ( a lot on Mumsnet!) I just block it out or skim over it! Its just a horrible word.
I didnt like Derek much, the Office was very good though and I could tolerate Extras ( apart from the episode with Kate Winslet as she winds me up !) the last one of extras was great. It was nice to see some familiar faces in this series - Penelope Wilson never seems to age.

HelmutFrontbut · 09/03/2019 15:54

I watched the whole series last night, omg I was sobbing at the end. It's VERY Ricky Gervais (was v shocked when he insulted the kid in the playground Shock) Lovely to see Ashley Jensen back after her tragedy, she's an amazing actress.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 09/03/2019 15:55

I really enjoyed his last stand up special on Netflix

So did I. The Caitlyn Jenner material was brave given the inevitable backlash. That takes a certain amount of chutzpah. Yes, him and his partner (Jane Fallon, writes chicklit?) are both protected enough financially for him to have the freedom to perform whatever material he likes but nonetheless kudos.
I wanted him as host for the Oscars but sadly, they aren't as game as the golden globes to allow him to say what he wants - his takedowns as host for the globes were superb.

What happened to Ashley? she went over to Hollywood and made a few things over there ( she was in Episodes I think? or something like that)
His remarks about James Cordon were also a bit harsh i thought - i dont follow celebrity gossip that much but they clearly dont get on ?? ( no idea)
i like the actress that plays his wife in this, she was in Derek and Bad Move with Jack Dee and is very good.

SavageBeauty73 · 09/03/2019 16:07

Ashley's husband committed suicide. Tragic.

The80sweregreat · 09/03/2019 16:09

I didn't know this about her. that is sad.

PizzaPlanet · 09/03/2019 16:18

I really like this show so far, best thing he’s done in years. Funny and sad at the same time.

The80sweregreat · 09/03/2019 16:29

It was also good to see Philomena Cunk in it! That pale blue suit was hideous.
He is so horrible to her.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 09/03/2019 16:48

Yes, they had an 8 year old. She had no idea he was suicidal and she was the one who found him in his car. Bloody awful.
Re. James Corden - Gervais talked of a chat show host he considered was working his way down with that job now stooped to trying to get youtube hits. Who could that be?!
Not sure of any beef - although Corden did do an impression of Gervais as Brent in his godawful sketch show.
I have to admit I laughed at the chauffeur line and the idea Corden would cream himself over dinner party with Jackson - you know that would be true, well would have been up til the Leaving Neverland documentary.
I like Corden - loved the Thank You Jeff Ariande parody/homage to Jeff Goldblum - and I do think he is talented but he's also an incredible sycophant celeb arse-licker. I actually prefer Russell Howard's interviews by a long way.
Corden admits he acted like a twunt when fame went to his head and seems pleasant enough now as a person - not sure he hid his genuinely pissed off reactions that well when AntnDec pranked him though. I half expected Do you know who I am? at one point...although seeing as his face was plastered on a billboard and he was still being asked for ID the annoyance was palpable but probably how anyone human would react. Unless it was all acted and I am super gullible.

Gervais reminds me of Victoria wood as she always used the same actors in her programmes.
His therapist is funny.
Also liked Roxy ( Daphne)
James cordon is another marmite character.

groundcontroltomontydon · 09/03/2019 17:09

Watched it all last night. Really great cast (inc the dog!). AJ and RG work so well together. Lot of leaps of faith required but really enjoyed it. I love a good swear - and a well placed expletive can be a beautiful thing - but the over reliance on just the one word was a teeny bit tedious.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 09/03/2019 17:18

I love Penelope Wilton. The guy playing the awful psychiatrist is the one that used to be in Pulling and also played Dennis Pennis, yes? Showing my age there!

I loved it. Binge watched all of it. Interestingly I love all of Ricky Gervais's tv stuff (Derek is my absolute favourite, I can watch that again and again) but I don't like his stand up. I don't really like nastiness - Michael MacIntyre much more my sort of thing.

I thought afterlife brought in some of the best elements of his previous work - nursing home tenderness, random office banter, celebrity take-downs. Underlying message of all of them, be kind to each other. That's all.

Thought perhaps it was a little bit too soppy at the end. But I'm a sucker for a happy ending so I'll let him get away with that.

codenameduchess · 09/03/2019 17:37

I binged it yesterday, love gervais but I am finding he's reusing old material a lot.... quite a few jokes/quotes from back in the radio/podcast days with Steve and Karl.

The episode with the delivery guy was challenging for me but actually quite well done, the whole show was a nice way of dealing with a tough subject without being too brooding, slow or insensitive.

The80sweregreat · 09/03/2019 19:36

A lot of this isn't new , but it's good to watch something that makes me laugh/ smile/ etc without being too forced and is fast moving. It's not an easy watch at times but the characters are well drawn and there are some funny moments. The music is also good. Im the only RG fan in my home!

BrexiteerThroughAndThrough · 09/03/2019 20:20

Brilliant series, watched the whole 6 episodes back to back.

WhiteDust · 09/03/2019 21:43

Watched all of it today and absolutely loved it.
RG plays a character literally sick with grief and sadness.
It's not easy to watch.

You'll need tissues.

SosigisAndCornflourSauce · 09/03/2019 22:04

Ooh I'll add it to my 'list'
