Did anyone else watch this tonight? I thought it was great! The contestants are warm, genuine and with normal ego levels. There's no pouting, posing, naked bodies.... just ordinary people racing to Singapore with little money and no internet. I'm loving the glimpses of people helping them along the way.

Is that how @ABC1234DEF? We couldn't work out how they'd saved so much and were considering watching it again from the start to see how they did it

Yeah it's how they ended up so far behind. They then caught up by going a different route to everyone else on the next leg (think they went over land via train whilst the rest went by boat?)

Why didn't Alex & Darren get on the same bus / train (can't remember which it was) as Tony & Elaine near the end? Surely if they had, then they would have won?

They took a different route I think. Plus Tony and Elaine had the last tickets to the bus.

I really enjoyed it. Shame it’s over. I don’t think the next series will be as good because the next teams will have a different outlook, they’ve seen how it’s edited and what tricks the teams used.

Fascinating to read the article on how it’s made, I could watch a programme on that as well.

Petalflowers · 08/04/2019 08:44

I wanted Alex and Darron to win also. God spotting that there was a three hour time difference.

Fair play to the Oldies on winning. They did well.

I liked one of the hipsters but wasn’t so keen on the other (never quite sure which is which). I liked the one who wanted to settle and look forward, rather than have another harebrain scheme.

The girls were absolutely stunning. Do you think they were tipped of that the hipsters were below and not able to come in? They were so far up, would they have spotted them? I thought that was a lovely touch at the end. Almost brought a tear to my eye.

Canoe - enjoy your holiday. I’ve never really fancied travelling to Asia, but can now see the attraction of Thailand etc.

Like others, discovered this programme by accident. The cast of characters, a real muxture, adventurers rather than wannabes, together with the changing scenery and sights made it perfect Sunday evening viewing.

My only criticism, when they changed the timing of the programme. Almost missed it last week, as it had become my sit-down-at 9pm programme.

TotalNoob · 08/04/2019 09:04

I wouldn’t have minded who won. I liked them all. Tony and Elaine had a determination to win that I enjoyed watching. And nice to see the oaps winning tbh. The end was a total farce as we also spotted they were several hours ahead of Darron and Alex but I suppose they had to keep us guessing to make good tv.

Great series.

NewSchoolNewName · 08/04/2019 09:39

The bit where Elaine said she’d spotted Darron and Alex at the lion statue made me think it was closer at the end than it really was.
I suppose she must have seen someone else who looked similar from a distance.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 08/04/2019 12:10

I thought the bit with the girls and the hipsters was good, but obviously set up. No way they’d have seem them.

aristocat · 08/04/2019 12:44

Yes. I could watch a programme on how the series was made too.

After losing a team so quickly at the beginning I too was expecting another team to be eliminated but this wasn't the case.

Personally I would have liked a couple more teams and then eliminate as they progress.

I also believe that the girls were definitely told that Felix & Josh were unable to get to the top due to lack of money. I noticed the 3 hour difference but it was edited to look closer just for the drama (which worked well)

TheweewitchRoz · 08/04/2019 13:32

Interestingly if they had eliminated another couple who came last, then Tony & Elaine would have been the 2nd to go out, wouldn't they?

TotalNoob · 08/04/2019 13:48

Yes I assumed the producers had told Natalie and Shemema to go down to speak to them but not why. Their reaction to their “plight” seemed natural to me.

purpleme12 · 08/04/2019 14:57

Theweewitch but then again if they'd known someone was going out they would have probably had a different strategy anyway

Cottonwood · 08/04/2019 15:04

Loved this series, the making of Alex for sure!

Corneliawildthing · 08/04/2019 15:52

I really enjoyed watching this and seeing places I'd only heard of before.

Really disappointed that Darren and Alex didn't win - I know it was a competition but the winners didn't come across very well. I felt sorry for Alex being really upset that Tony had told him a crock of shit about their route - it was the route they had taken after all - not the one they were going to take. I don't know what he thought he gained by doing that.

Petalflowers · 08/04/2019 15:55

I wondered why he didn’t mention the past route either.

Tony and Elaine started slightly later then the rest. Do you think they had less money as a result, or had the original couple deducted from their kitty, or it was so near the start they perceived it wouldn’t make any difference?

ColdCrumpetsandButter · 08/04/2019 16:04

I think they were given the amount that the couple who left had left at that point.

aristocat · 08/04/2019 16:12

I thought Elaine & Tony had the budget less what had been spent by the first couple.

Also, imagine if they hadn't taken a rest day how much faster they'd have got to the finish line?

SwedishEdith · 08/04/2019 16:43

Why did they only eliminate one couple? Was that ever explained?

CurbsideProphet · 08/04/2019 17:04

No it hasn't been explained why only one couple was eliminated. I thought would have been down to 3 couples for the final leg.

ColdCrumpetsandButter · 08/04/2019 21:10

I was expecting a couple per leg to get eliminated then maybe leaving it down to two couples for the finale?

I think a few more couples would have made it more exciting.

tomhazard · 08/04/2019 21:25

I really enjoyed watching this series! Like many others I was cheering on Alex and Darron; but even though they didn't win they got so much out of this. I liked all the couples until the last episode when Tony and Elaine lies to Alex's face about a route they had already taken. I don't understand what the point of that was and it put me off them, especially when it really upset Alex. In some ways I admired Elaine's tenacity and determination but she overstepped the mark a couple of times and painted herself badly.

Not sure how a second series of this can really work

YouBumder · 08/04/2019 22:02

I loved this series but was meh at the winners. Obviously it’s all edited for telly but they came across a bit smug with a bit of a nasty streak at times.

YouBumder · 08/04/2019 22:07

I quite liked Josh and Felix. Natalie and Shameema were nice, if a pair of blaggers. Darron and Alex were my fave though. Darron just seemed to love it all and Alex grew up so much after the “worst day of his life” crying in the street in Budapest.

SmarmyMrMime · 09/04/2019 11:04

I've loved this series, especially when they were in China and did a reverse travel Xian, Chengdu, Guillin through places I've been to. It's given me itchy feet, and DS1 (8) seems pretty keen on the idea of interrailing... Grin

I think the purpose of the elimination partway through was that the dearest travel was in Europe so that's where the biggest impact on budgets was, and the greatest financial reward for working. The elimination stopped couples lingering too long on cheaper budget transport which then impacted what they were left with at the end which was too fine for Josh and Felix.

It is the best "real people" show I've seen. You've got to have something about you to be up for a show like that and constant moving on and planning takes its toll on you (still remembers the 15hr day travelling from Lubini Nepal to Varanasi India by foot, jeep, bus, cattle class on train and tuk tuk.

I really hope there's another series.

Alex is the greatest winner from the experiences he's gained. Something really switched on in him through China. Tony and Elaine deserved their win. They started with a disadvantage from expensive choices to little benefit by the team they replaced and they strategised carefully. It's refreshing seeing an older woman with an ambitious competitive streak!

Cottonwood · 09/04/2019 13:09

Alex came alive, travel does that to you doesn't it, wonderful viewing! 😁

dottypotter · 09/04/2019 14:19

how did they get their washing done while on the move?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/04/2019 14:22

I thought the rest days where they had 36 hrs at a checkpoint. They had laundry done, medical treatment and things like that. Only what I imagine happened, haven’t read what they actually did. If they made a program on the making of.... I’d be interested to see it.
