Has anyone seen this, because seriously what the actual fuck???

OP posts:
Cocolepew · 23/01/2019 20:52

Just finished it this minute, her parents are total fuckwits.
Its just unbelievable.

Nothisispatrick · 24/01/2019 11:29

Just watching the first episode. Absolutely insane. I am struggling with her parents, they must have been completely manipulated but I mean come on! He’s back in their house with access to Jan AFTER he had kidnapped her.

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/01/2019 11:31

It was like the social anxiety of upsetting him and his wife took precedent over their own dd

Nothisispatrick · 24/01/2019 11:31

Oh I’ve just realised it’s not episodes, I thought it was a series.

Nothisispatrick · 24/01/2019 11:32

And both parents are sleeping with him? Jesus.

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/01/2019 15:53

And both parents are sleeping with him

I get the impression that the father especially was too embarrassed to say no.

Even after they didn't want to upset his treatment so let him have access to her bedroom.

Sosie91 · 24/01/2019 17:33

This documentary just got weirder by the second! Couldn’t quite get over the fact that the mum slept with him after he abducted and married their 12 year old daughter! Mum seemed like she was still infactuated with him.

RegIsDead · 24/01/2019 17:36

This was seriously weird. The poor daughter was not protected by the parents at all.

And the aliens! Wtaf?

Utter madness, the lot of it.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 24/01/2019 17:40

I had to keep turning it off in a WTF shock.

So so naive...poor poor Jan.

Nothisispatrick · 24/01/2019 17:41

I would like to know if she still has a relationship with her parents. They did not protect her at all.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/01/2019 17:45

The whole thing was weird and creepy.
They didn't protect their daughter at all.

Whilst I'm fairly sure this is far from normal, it does make me wonder about lesser? abuse (sorry, not sure what term to use), might go on in small, mainly Mormon towns.

IamFrauBlucher · 24/01/2019 20:34

I watched it on Saturday and I had to watch some parts again because I couldn't quite digest it.

It utterly amazes me at the length some men will go to, to act out their sick fantasies and urges.

It was a deliberate strategy to involve himself with the girls parents to drive a wedge between them and try and shame them in their church/local community. Also I guess if he was showing sexual attraction to the adults then it would mislead them from thinking he was sexually interested in their child. Still it's hard to believe you'd not call the police until Sunday when your child went missing on a Thursday.

The FBI guy seemed particularly flabbergasted, frustrated and disgusted by the parents actions.

It looked like she did have a relationship with her parents as her mum wrote the book with her.

I couldn't work out if the parents were still together though.

Im watching the Ted Bundy tapes now. Also very disturbing.

Nothisispatrick · 24/01/2019 20:39

I find ted bundy more understandable if that makes sense. Evil serial killer, we know they exist. Two parents who not only don’t seem to give a shit when you’re kidnapped aged 12, they BOTH have a sexual relationship with your abuser when you’re brought home! I am actually flabbergasted by that documentary.

IamFrauBlucher · 24/01/2019 21:03

Yes I know what you mean @Nothisispatrick, it's not quite as mind boggling as the story of Berchtold. It's very interesting to watch so far (episode 3)

Interesting discussion on Reddit about Brobergs/Berchtold too:

Cocolepew · 24/01/2019 21:31

I could never forgive the parents, there's naive then there's , I don't know, whatever the fuck they were thinking. It's just so odd and twisted.
I know it was small town America in the 70's but they did nothing to protect Jan. They even spoke about Bs obsession with her as soon as they got to know him, but yet let him into their lives.
The mum was still smiling when she spoke about B.
Also I couldn't believe him confronting Jan in the courtrooom, I'm so glad she was strong enough to answer him back.
I spent the whole time yelling at the TV.

JamAtkins · 24/01/2019 21:45

Just started watching this and I’m confused in every sense. Is the trip to Seattle before or after the horse riding/ camper van abduction. And when did the parents start sleeping with him?

JamAtkins · 24/01/2019 21:53

Up to the aliens now. Making ‘sense’

Cocolepew · 24/01/2019 21:54

The mum started after the first abduction. Imo she was sleeping with him before, though she said they only kissed and touched Hmm.
Im sure the dad was having sex with him too. He said about giving him a hand job, but on the tape B said he started a homosexual affair with her dad.
I think the mum was jealous of Jan. Why was she speaking to him on the phone like they were still pals, when they didn't know where she was the seccond time. She was more interested in whether he still wanted to marry Jan than asking where she was.
Also the dad saying his divorce was the worse thing that ever happened to him! Ffs never mind your daughter being sexually abused and brainwashed.

IamFrauBlucher · 25/01/2019 08:08

@JamAtkins the timeline is on the Reddit link I attached further down the thread. It kind of clarifies when things happened.

Mrsemcgregor · 25/01/2019 20:14

It’s nuts isn’t it?

My personal conclusion is that the parents were actually complicit in a weird cult type way. He had completely brainwashed them into thinking it’s absolutely fine to let him lay in bed with their 12 year old daughter as “therapy”.

The mind really does boggle, but there was a lot of that crazy stuff back then, the Jonestown massacre, Waco etc....

OP posts:
Poodloo · 25/01/2019 20:41

Eurgh I'm so glad to see a thread about this. What a shocking story. I hate how blindsided some Mormons are. Many Mormon communities are like this and it makes me so sad to see. Seriously what parent puts god in front of the safety of their own child? Oh god says for this therapy we should let this man who kidnapped our child, get in to bed with her. Okay. NO NO NO. I felt so sorry for her.

I also don't understand why they didn't arrest him when they went to his camper van and he had full blown pictures of a child all over his van. Surely that rings alarm bells? That poor girl..
A quick Google shows she's an actress now so I'm glad she's managed to have a positive outcome in her life.

Mammyloveswine · 26/01/2019 18:44

Jesus I just watched... omfg those parents are absolute morons!

FromEden · 26/01/2019 19:02

Watched this last night. They were more concerned with what people would think than protecting their own daughter. The fact that they waited so long to call police after the first abduction because they didn't want to cause a fuss is bizarre. Also, the only time they showed any emotion was when they talked about their marriage troubles. Like that was the absolute worst thing that happened to them. The mother even seemed to talk fondly about her affair with 'B'. I mean, wtf.

Imstickingwiththisone · 26/01/2019 23:12

Just watched this..weirdly hated the parents more than B. Obviously he was a disgusting predator who had ruined so many lives but they were just so weak and pathetic that they not only failed to protect her, they actively put her in danger with their brainless decisions. And they were so fucking selfish worrying about word getting out about their affairs. Absolute pieces of shit.

I hated how B's brother spoke so casually about what B was like before Jan too.

Unfortunately you can't stop people like B existing, but you need good people to be there to protect the vulnerable, and none of them gave a shit.

Jan was so strong at the end to face up to him in the courtroom and shut him down so articulately and level headed. Brave woman.

Imstickingwiththisone · 26/01/2019 23:14

Oh and the whole paedophilia wasn't a thing in the 70s. So what, it was not normal to be so enamoured with a child and that's that. It doesn't need a label or his intentions spelling out, your gut reaction would be that it's weird
