Hope it's OK for me to start a new thread - could not believe we'd burned out on the last one.

Am looking forward to seeing highlights of the Fed/Tits match later.

Private I think Rod Laver has, but his wins span before and after the open Era, for example, he has only won 5 open era GS titles- but has won 11 overall, iirc.

PrivateParkin · 20/01/2019 21:28

Yes I think that's right - I want Rafa to be mentioned in that same bracket as the Rocket!! Come on Rafa!! I'd never really realised that was a record up for grabs, if you know what I mean - everyone talks about the total number of slams, and if Rafa or Djok could ever catch Roger - but the two time winner of each... Well you don't hear that mentioned much! If ever. I wonder why Hmm

Raahh · 20/01/2019 21:29

I get all my geeky stats from this going on the Ultimate tennis statistics.com website, by the way.

I am stats geek and can bore myself for hours Grin

Raahh · 20/01/2019 21:30

And I know Rafa hasn't won the WTF- but it used to played on different surfaces.

And guess what- Laver didn't win the equivalent of it , either. Grin

PrivateParkin · 20/01/2019 21:32

Oh god I love stats (when they relate to tennis that is). I used to read and re-read the World of Tennis almanac as a kid - desperate for tennis info! It was that or Ceefax, as you said Raahh. And a subscription to Serve and Volley magazine Grin

Also I seem able to retain tennis-based info in a way I can't about, say, where I left that paperwork I really need, etc Grin

JaneJeffer · 20/01/2019 21:37

I learn all my stats from Raahh and Andrew Castle Wink

PrivateParkin · 20/01/2019 21:40

Raahh is definitely more reliable than AC Grin

Raahh · 20/01/2019 21:40
Grin

Me and Ac, we are like , bessies.

I love it. When you see how Wilander won 7 slams, but was number for 20 weeks and Lendl was number for 270 weeks and won 8 slams, it makes your head explode.

Grin.

Raahh · 20/01/2019 21:46

I do remember Ivan being quite meh of Andy getting to number 1 at the time actually- because he knew it meant little really, compared to earning titles. And so it proved. (because he only stayed there because Djok also had a shit year- it's how tennis rankings work).

magimedi · 20/01/2019 22:02

Tits was part of Patrick Mortagalu's academy - had to check that whoile watching the highlights.

I thought Roger looked OLD ( and he is the same age as my DC!!).

Have a feeling that Bustagut will win - I think Tits will be so overwhelmed by his defeat of Roger.

Private :" living inside a Tupperware container". My late (lamented ) MIL always talked about British winter like living at the bottom of a pond! We got out this am into some sunlight along the sea front, to see yachts racing & the lifeboat & inshore lifeboat on inshore practice drill. And a bit of sun but very cold in a force 4+ Easterly. But felt better for it (in a very Britisah way).

Tennis GO! Halep! Tennis

And probably for most of the time Andy was No1, he was actually not winning as much as he did when he wasn't No1?! Funny old game Grin

Great Wilander/Lendl knowledge!!

Raahh · 20/01/2019 22:16

I love you lot.

Any where else I would get slaughtered. Grin

BagelGoesWalking · 21/01/2019 00:32

I was surprised to hear how many Slams Wilander had won (I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as you lot), he's not mentioned often as being right up at the top in his era. He only won one less than Lendl but I'm sure more people would remember Lendl, or John McEnroe who has also won 7.

Raahh · 21/01/2019 06:13

Dh woke me up earlier, and I was surprised to see the scores of the Raonic match. I know when he's playing well, there is no reason why he can't beat anyone, but I expected more of a fight from Zverev.

Raahh · 21/01/2019 08:23

COME ON SIMONA!!

(Although when I left to take dd1 to school, I was happily watching the Coric match- and will miss most of this when I leave in a bit to take dd2).

I hate mornings .Grin

Raahh · 21/01/2019 08:26

I am already getting irritated by the obvious Serena bias to the commentary.

So it is probably a good thing I won't be watching. Grin

PrivateParkin · 21/01/2019 09:13

I was expecting Coric to win that - he seems to be staging a bit of a fightback now though.

Am out and about so not watching but keeping up with the scores...

JaneJeffer · 21/01/2019 09:15

Come on Simona!!

JaneJeffer · 21/01/2019 09:17

Great stuff

JaneJeffer · 21/01/2019 09:27

The commentary is so annoying "Williams, Williams, Williams" when Simona just won the game.

PrivateParkin · 21/01/2019 09:35

Sounds annoying! Sort of glad I'm not watching!

JaneJeffer · 21/01/2019 09:42

Serena looks exhausted!

kazzaD66 · 21/01/2019 09:45

Jane it's because she's a mum Grin

Looking at the scores, I see Keith is 2 sets and a break down.

JaneJeffer · 21/01/2019 09:51

Feck it. This is stressful!

Raahh · 21/01/2019 09:52

Grrr.

I've just sat down to watch, and the commentary is winding me up already.

I see Carreno Busta 2 sets up on Keith Shock

I am really enjoying this Aussie open- so many amazing matches, players going far beyond what has been expected of them .

COME ON SIMONA!
