Anyone watching? Not quite the same without the songs!

Eddie Redmayne is very beautiful. I don't fancy him (I'm sure he's gutted about that..) but can see why people like him.

I loved the film as much as the stage musical. I was so relieved as I thought there was no way they'd do it justice but for me they did. I found Hugh Jackman very moving and hot The Thenardiers were miscast though. Imo of course.

The musical is touring this year if anyone wants to grab some tickets. Good cast. Don't know how many will be left but could be worth a look.

purpleme12 · 10/01/2019 00:48

I hope it never stops touring!

a foundling is a child abandoned by its parents and looked after by someone else.

The Foundling Museum in London is worth a visit. Often the mothers left a token with the baby - many hoped to come back and collect their child when they were in less desperate circumstances, but most didn't ever manage it.

EB the museum is near Russell Square tube right near where I work so I sometimes have a wander round the little park there and read the info boards about the history of it. It's very interesting.

creamcheeseandlox · 10/01/2019 09:35

Also a good friend of mine is playing Javert in the les mis tour so YES it is a must see. He is fabulous...and very tall (6ft 7) so really does play him with intimidation.

purpleme12 · 10/01/2019 09:40

Aww ace!

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/01/2019 10:57

Just looked at that cast list. I think I've seen the actor playing Valjean as Enjolras some years ago.

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/01/2019 10:57

And the Fantine as Cosette!

IamPickleRick · 10/01/2019 11:42

Oh wow, I’ve walked past that building (Foundling Museum) so many times and never really noticed it! I worked in the area and went to Birkbeck. I might take a look!

ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/h/hugo/victor/lesmis/contents.html

A translation of Les Miserables is available in full here. The table of contents makes it relatively straightforward to work out what the text relates to.

I've also got a modern translation on my Kindle. By Christine Donoghue. The title was also translated as The Wretched.

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/01/2019 15:29

The Kindle download is free from Amazon.

creamcheeseandlox did your friend play javert in the dublin production? Saw it last week it was a mainly uk cast. Was brilliant and javert was fantastic and he was very tall

Deadringer · 10/01/2019 16:24

My DD has gone to see it today in Dublin, she is watching the series with me and is loving it.

creamcheeseandlox · 10/01/2019 16:45

Dulra yes that's him. He's fantastic. He was also in the London cast at the palace theatre.

BestIsWest · 10/01/2019 18:25

The book is great but there are some very long rambling bits about Italian monasteries and Parisian sewers (I might be wrong on that as I may have skipped bits)

PiggyPlumPie · 10/01/2019 18:41

Ooh creamcheese is he coming to Edinburgh as well? Going later this month Grin.

I'm loving the series so far, so beautifully done and harrowing too. I couldn't watch Fantines teeth being pulled, I just watched DD1s face.

llangennith · 10/01/2019 19:10

If you'd never read the book, seen the film(s) or seen it at the theatre it's probably very enjoyable and has a good cast.

Loopytiles · 10/01/2019 19:47

Loved Susan Boyle’s Dreamed a Dream too.

Thanks for the tip about the tour.

creamcheeseandlox · 10/01/2019 20:40

Piggy. I assume so. He's cast for the whole tour so unless he's understudied he should be on.

Dulra · 10/01/2019 21:18

creamcheeseandlox he was brilliant and at the end when the audience were cheering he had the biggest smile on his looked like he's really enjoying it. Pass on my admiration Grin

Dulra · 10/01/2019 21:19

*That should be biggest smile on his face!

PiggyPlumPie · 10/01/2019 22:19

Excellent, will report back!

Woohoo1 · 11/01/2019 13:59

Stupid question but why did people sell teeth !? To make false ones?? I’m sorry if I sound ignorant

SoupDragon · 11/01/2019 14:10

Exactly that, Woohoo.

undomesticgodde55 · 12/01/2019 08:28

I would guess (though it is only a guess and not research based on anyway at all) that because dental hygiene wasn't as good as now, if you had a rotten tooth it would be pulled out and you were left with a hole. They wouldn't have the dental treatment we do, so you would have been left with a gap. If you had a bit of money you could pay for a healthy tooth to replace your rotting one, hence why Fantine would have been paid well for her healthy teeth to be given to a more wealthy toothless customer. I bit like a wig.
