Surprised there's no thread on this. Did anyone watch it last night or has the series reached its natural end and is no longer attracting viewers?

OP posts:
HelenaDove · 24/02/2019 21:09

toddler that storyline has fucked me off too. Why should Heather need to go to bloody counselling Shes done nothing wrong.

Drookit · 24/02/2019 21:09

What Man uses Prostitue due to Stress shite was that?
Well done all who correctly predicted gran was the abortionist!

ChesterGreySideboard · 24/02/2019 21:10

I think the story of Val’s nan was very well handled. They presented both side of the argument. As is often said there are two kinds of abortion, legal and illegal.

And I like that you were left to draw your own conclusions about her spreading infection from the boil.

Bittermints · 24/02/2019 21:14

AIBU to think my GP is talking shite when he says that my 'D'H, who's just given me the clap after visiting a prostitute while I was pregnant, is just letting off stress and we need to go to marriage guidance?

That would be the most unanimous AIBU ever! One long thread of LTBs.

Poor Val. Poor May. But well done, Sister Frances!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 24/02/2019 21:14

The one who plays Vals nan is very good too . She is also Cora in EastEnders but after I first noted her in last weeks episode, I forgot all about her being Cora.

If Trixie and Val did inform the police at least Trixie can state that Val knew nothing about it . The way she reacted and spoke would tell her that anyway . Looking forward to next weeks but also sad as its been a good series on the whole this year.

Ingesw · 24/02/2019 21:20

So Vals nan charges £7, wasn't that all they knew about the abortionist who the woman who died went to?

glamorousgrandmother · 24/02/2019 21:22

To be fair I don't think Dr Smug thought visiting the prostitute was an acceptable way of relieving stress. It was his sergeant on National Service. The counselling was suggested to save their marriage. Distasteful as that might seem to us, divorce was more unusual then and being a single parent was something to be avoided. I'm not excusing his behaviour in any way but it might have seemed like a way forward in 1964.

WitchSharkadder · 24/02/2019 21:23

Hard hitting but brilliant episode. Yy to Val and her Gran giving their version of events. There’s no right answer (other than safe abortion for all obviously, but not that’s available to them at that point in history) so very sad.

I agree about the Mrs. Pugh storyline, but it was probably fairly realistic for 1964. Divorce certainly wouldn’t have been encouraged. It was ‘put up and shut up’ wasn’t it.

I loved Sister Frances too, wanted to high 5 her when she broke up the party.

glamorousgrandmother · 24/02/2019 21:24

I think they hammered the £7 bit home and the source of the infection in the women who died.

Absolutely stunning acting tonight from all involved. The abortion argument should be shown to councils to encourage exclusion zones around Marie Curie clinics, it's never a simple choice, from either end.

Have to say sister Monica Joan gets on my tits far more than the Turners.

SoupDragon · 24/02/2019 21:32

Val showed the perfect mix of bewilderment and horror/disgust.

diddl · 24/02/2019 21:33

It was interesting to see both points re the abortion, but the death & suffering caused-you'd have to be so desperate to have risked it, wouldn't you?

And burning the £7 because it meant nothing-the poor girl had probably have had to have saved hard for that!

Ellawood2 · 24/02/2019 21:35

I was shocked that it was Vals nan who was the abortist sp sorry that the turners have to give up the little girl. I love call the midwife

Snugglepiggy · 24/02/2019 21:37

For every scene that is cringey with the Turners for example there's a scene that is superbly acted like the one tonight with Val and her nan.The actress playing Val really nailed all the shock, horror and confusion in that. For those scenes it remains one of the most moving programmes.

CoachBombay · 24/02/2019 21:38

Well done all who called it on Val's nan. Superb acting from both women also.

Is it bad that I've somewhat become overly invested in Lucille's storyline to the point where I want a big white wedding 😳🙈😂

The prostitute storyline let's just say was very close to home personally, and even though it's 2019 and not 1960's I chose to forgive. So it's a personal preference on that one I think. I wouldn't have blamed her of she walked either though.

Binglebong · 24/02/2019 21:42

Judging by some posts on here about post birth invasions we could do with a few more Sister Francess.

legolimb · 24/02/2019 21:43

I'm just watching now.

Trixies outfit for bingo is quite something!

Drookit · 24/02/2019 21:48

I loved Violet's green outfit for the canapé party.
Sheila's yellow double breasted coat.
Lucile's yellow suit and her orange outfit.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 24/02/2019 21:53

Trixie looked like Dick Emery at the bingo.

Girliefriendlikescake · 24/02/2019 21:55

Good episode, if my h had given me the clap when pregnant he would have been out on his arse. He clearly wasn't going to stop counselling or not.

Brilliant acting with Valerie and her nan, my only doubt is if her nan had been doing abortions for a long time I can't believe she wouldn't have called Valerie before then.

SoupDragon · 24/02/2019 22:00

I don't think you can judge Heathers reaction to her H's prostitute use by today's standards. It would have been very different back then and being a divorced single mother would be frowned upon I think.

NotANotMan · 24/02/2019 22:10

Sorry if I've missed this will read back but is Gran the reason those two women got infections after the abortions? With the streptococcus?

Bittermints · 24/02/2019 22:12

I agree, SoupDragon. Different times. Even ten years later with far more liberal divorce laws having come in, there was a lot of stigma around divorce. Every single divorce granted in our area was reported in the local paper along with the grounds. My parents always read that section and commented if it was someone they knew. Hmm

ChesterGreySideboard · 24/02/2019 22:13

It’s not be said that she was the abortionist in those cases, Notaman but it has been implied.
