Surprised there's no thread on this. Did anyone watch it last night or has the series reached its natural end and is no longer attracting viewers?

OP posts:
Mrscaindingle · 03/02/2019 20:57

My mum had a cousin who died at the age of 22 from a botched abortion in the 1960's
Sad

Clionba · 03/02/2019 20:59

Dreadful. You either have legal abortions or dangerous ones.
I'm surprised they went ahead with the keep fit display.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/02/2019 21:01

@Clionba I couldn't agree more and I'm a practicing Catholic!

SoupDragon · 03/02/2019 21:01

Legally he couldn't help her though :(

OddBoots · 03/02/2019 21:02

Looks like she has been in quite a few things

Clionba · 03/02/2019 21:04

That was a nice scene at the end with the two blokes going off to work together.

glamorousgrandmother · 03/02/2019 21:45

I think the abortion story line might be ongoing until it is legalised. Perhaps the abortionist, if it is the same one, will be found.

Clawdy · 03/02/2019 22:45

The abortion story was heartbreaking. And that poor bitter bereaved husband, trying to cope with no help by the looks of it. To be fair to the doc, there was no way really he could have legally arranged a termination. Presumably it will make him feel it should be made legal.

SaturdayNext · 03/02/2019 23:16

I hope Dr Turner will rethink any further women, he could have helped her

Well no, he couldn't really. The Abortion Act didn't come in till 1967, and before that the only way an abortion could happen would be if the woman was a "mental an physical wreck" which clearly wasn't the case here.

steppemum · 03/02/2019 23:25

I'm afraid I was a bit - really? Another botched abortion?

theluckiest · 03/02/2019 23:42

Call the Midwife hit peak teal tonight!! It rather distracted from the serious subject matter when I kept thinking 'Blimey, that bedspread and wall match beautifully.'

Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2019 02:03

It's was at least the third back street abortion story and the second toxaemia story. (Cynthia had one in series one)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/02/2019 06:18

Given that the last abortion story was only a couple of episodes ago, it was a bit too soon. Although maybe it will gather momentum for change. Maybe Dr Turner and/or some of the midwives start campaigning?

They must be running out of obs and gynae emergencies. To my knowledge they've not yet had an intergender baby one?

Clionba · 04/02/2019 06:26

This abortion story was a happily married woman with children. The previous one was the classic single woman - maybe to demonstrate it affected all women? Also the shocking consequences.
I agree about the teal bedsheets and walls!

SaturdayNext · 04/02/2019 06:52

Isn't the point of having two botched abortion stories relatively close together in part that there is a running story about the person who is carrying out the abortions? I suspect their identity will come to light in a future episode.

Bittermints · 04/02/2019 06:54

There was the young woman with type 1diabetes who was pregnant by her boyfriend. Termination could legally be offered there because of the health risks.

ChesterGreySideboard · 04/02/2019 07:01

What was the big deal with the ringworm?
I had ringworm loads as a kid because I lived in the country. They can piss off with the ‘you catch it from dirty people’ business.

Yes I wonder if the botched abortion story was to show that it went in all the time to all sorts of women.

flatpackbox · 04/02/2019 07:11

I presumed that it was because it is highly contagious and she is a midwife chester.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/02/2019 07:13

Good point, Clionba. Maybe they will approach the abortion storyline from many different perspectives.

ChesterGreySideboard · 04/02/2019 07:25

Good point. Ringworm is easy to pass on.

glamorousgrandmother · 04/02/2019 08:31

When I was a newly qualified teacher I thought a child in my class had cigarette burns on his arm. It turned out to be ringworm.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 04/02/2019 10:16

loll @ being common !!

My very UNcommon mother had bleached hair in the 60s !!!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 04/02/2019 10:17

Re “no naice gel in the 50s or early 60s would have peroxide blonde hair”.

Bollocks .

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 04/02/2019 10:18
