Surprised there's no thread on this. Did anyone watch it last night or has the series reached its natural end and is no longer attracting viewers?

OP posts:

Nothing wrong with Trixie's voice, she sounds a bit 'head girl' and I can imagine her at St Trinian's. Helen George speaks like that in real life, I remember from Strictly and also she did an interview after she had her baby in real life - her experience was nothing like on Call the Midwife, it was awful, poor soul.

I rather like her and had great sympathy for Trixie's trials and tribulations in previous series. She has matured a lot too. What's with the voice problem? Lots of people talk like her, it all depends on background and education and she doesn't have a regional accent like Phyllis, Valerie and Shelagh. Most of them don't though, Sisters Hilda and Julienne for example & Dr Turner's practice administrator (who is a Scot in real life). Received pronunciation used to be very much the thing when I was at school.

Just came on here to see the comments on tonight's episode. My little boy was born with a cleft lip and I wanted to see how well it was done before watching it.

drspouse · 27/01/2019 22:14

The beach was a great idea and very successful.
I couldn't help thinking these days it would be really expensive and no use to those who can't afford to get to Southend.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 27/01/2019 22:16

Lovely episode, I did roll my eyes a bit when the Dr was mansplaining bereavement though!

The treatment for cleft pallet has moved on thankfully and so has people's attitudes towards it. I cried when her husband clapped.

Baby dawn was so cute!

ChesterGreySideboard · 27/01/2019 22:42

So when all the midwives were sat around painting their toe nails who was on duty?

drspouse · 27/01/2019 22:50

One or more of the nuns?

Toddlerteaplease · 28/01/2019 06:32

Missed last nights. But I'm a paediatric nurse and we do Cleft surgery on my ward so it'll be fascinating to see.
I was chatting to our ward cleaner who is in his 60's. He had a Cleft lip and palate. I was amazed when he told me his palate has never been repaired and he has a metal plate instead.

I couldn't help thinking these days it would be really expensive and no use to those who can't afford to get to Southend.

Every summer in our city - fair;y landlocked - we have a beach and seaside tea put up in the city centre. The beach and deck chairs etc are all free to use. You just pay for the funfair rides. It's very popular. We don't have a paddling pool but there are some big fountains that are on at the time too.

Aragog · 28/01/2019 07:34

Ellie's - it was sensitively done. There was some negativity as to how he looked by other mums, and the midwife delivering was shocked. But the mum and dad, and siblings, really took to him and loved him for who he was. Um did find it hard re feeding in the episode but she overcome many of the issues.they talked about the operations.

My brother was born with a cleft palette and hare lip back in the 70s. Even in the short time between this episode and him being born they]re were changes, though my brother did undergo many operations throughout his early years and the last one in his early 20s. Now though I believe the treatment is even more smooth and the results even more great.

elliejjtiny · 28/01/2019 09:42

Thankyou Aragog. It will be interesting to see how things have changed, especially with feeding. I'm in a facebook group with parents of children with clefts and also adults who have clefts themselves. DS has had 2 cleft surgeries so far, not including grommets and 1 or 2 to go although I know some adults choose to have lip fillers, rhinoplasty and other things as well.

Lydiaatthebarre · 28/01/2019 12:49

I like Trixie's voice. She's meant to be from an upper middle class family and grew up in the early/mid 20th century so would have had that RP boarding school accent.

Clionba · 28/01/2019 13:27

If she is supposed to be posh, why has she got bleached hair with dark roots? That was a sign of being "common" or "on the stage"!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/01/2019 13:31

Can anyone verify the historical accuracy of the measles vaccination storyline? Not sure it was promoted widely in 1964 - know family members born around this time who did have measles and mumps (and from families who would have uptaken such vaccines if they'd been widely available).

Rockbird · 28/01/2019 13:44

McGann is very very big on vaccinations etc and measles is one of his bugbears. I'm pretty sure that's 100% accurate. He totally gets on my tits but he does have areas of interest that he spends a lot of time researching.

Bittermints · 28/01/2019 13:44

Haven't checked but that rings true for me. My aunt told me something about signing up for a measles vaccination trial and my cousins were all born in the early to mid 60s.

Carefullwhereyougo · 28/01/2019 13:51

Newmodelarmy - It was stated as a pilot vaccine so that could be why your relatives could not access the measles vac in early 60s. When Shelagh had to explain to the distraught Mum that her daughter was too young to be included in the trial, I am sure Shelagh said something like "if the vaccine proves to be ok, hopefully your daughter will be able to have the vaccine in a year or two" .

Carefullwhereyougo · 28/01/2019 14:00

It occurred to me last night that, this series we are missing any younger male characters. With Tom and Christopher both gone and Reggie and Tim too young, we need another young curate or a junior doctor to join the cast.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/01/2019 14:06

Thanks for the clarification about the measles pilot vaccine. That makes perfect sense.

Yes, I agree that a new young male character or two would be welcome. Mind you, the love interest for this series seems to potentially be between Phyllis and the mature policeman? Although I sense that Phyllis isn't keen...?

LIZS · 28/01/2019 14:07

Does the doctor ever see patients who are not pg women , nuns or babies/toddlers?

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 28/01/2019 14:13

I thought there was going to be a problem with the measles vaccine, my uncle nearly died after having being involved in an early measles vaccine trial. Have just done some math's and worked out that would have been around 1955 though so earlier than this series.

Trixie def needs a love interest!

Are Phyllis and the copper going to get it on then?! Grin

iklboo · 28/01/2019 14:17

I'm nearly 50 and there was no measles vaccination. I caught it when I was 10 and was really poorly. I threw up on my Sooty glove puppet. He was never the same Sad

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/01/2019 14:18

Trixie def needs a love interest! I think so too. She seems to have done lots of growing up since she was in a relationship with Tom. Maybe a whirlwind romance for her (let's hope so).

LIZS · 28/01/2019 14:23

I had a measles vaccine in late 60s.

drspouse · 28/01/2019 15:50

I also had the vaccine, also late 60s baby, sounds like it was the original postcode lottery.

iklboo · 28/01/2019 15:55

Sounds like it doesn't it? Pretty much everyone I went to school with had measles at some point.
