Hoping this gets posted in time - and that there is still plenty to say on the matter!

Would you like to share that "squashed fly biscuit" recipe Chardonnays?

I'd like more stuff like this, too.

And we will forgive your mother's "Charlotte" (Not sure if you should have shared this one - sounds like one of those "family secret" recipes, passed from mother to daughter through the ages . . . )

What an interesting thread, may I join you?

Coincidentally I ordered a new copy of the John Toveybook last month. Smile My old one was very dog-eared.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/11/2018 12:12

I’ll bake the biscuits and review the recipe over the weekend.

I was just browsing this morning, haven’t bought the magazine yet.

I do agree that Sainsbury’s is the best supermarket food mag though.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/11/2018 12:38

You may Donkey - you are very welcome. This thread is the natural evolutionary result of GBBO. Darwin would be proud.

John Tovey - that's a name I haven't heard for a while.

Taffeta - your H Twattery-Twattingstone book is different from mine. Mine is "Veg every day"

I will still try your recipe, even though it involves dead bodies.

(Mildly hypocritical - I am known to eat dead bodies, but am trying to reduce my consumption. I used to be veggie, but fell off the wagon because I got sick of making umpteen meals for different tastebuds each day)

Ah shame Schaden

There’s quite a few good easy fish recipes in it too. I’d like to try some of his bread recipes. Apart from flatbread, I’ve made very little bread.

I think the baking book I’ve probably made the most from is The Clandestine Cake Club first book. So much better than any GBBO shite.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/11/2018 14:37

The Clandestine Cake Club

Now THAT is a good title for a cookery book!

Afternoon Smile been lusting over baking supplies in Aldi

VanillaSugary · 02/11/2018 16:13

Ooh, I went into Aldi this morning OMG grems did you see the Christmas cookie cutters? And the "Christmas bag fasteners"? They're only "Christmas " because they're green and red!

Hello donkey! Welcome. To fill you in, @SneakyGremlins and I have entered next year's GBBO so we will be fighting it out in the tent. The Finale will be a custard pie fight.

SneakyGremlins · 02/11/2018 16:16

Filled some more of my form in today too.

Thing is I don't usually photograph my bakes!

I did Vanilla! And the Christmas tubs that are pink (???) Making them Christmassy?

WereWolfcub · 02/11/2018 16:21

Taffeta i like the Sainsbury’s magazine as well. I have three ringbound a4 notebooks full of years of cut outs from good food, Sainsbury’s mag and similar

WereWolfcub · 02/11/2018 16:23

Schaden this is a lovely veggie recipe www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1364/spicy-root-and-lentil-casserole

WereWolfcub · 02/11/2018 16:25

And this is the most delicious twice baked veggie soufflé from the Betty’s cookbook

To Be-Ro or not to Be-Ro . . . that is the question
VanillaSugary · 02/11/2018 17:23

That looks nice! I've never made a soufflé (makes mental note for next year's Technical Challenge) is it easy to make?

WereWolfcub · 02/11/2018 17:26

Really easy Vanilla and because it’s twice baked no need to worry about them falling

Taffeta · 02/11/2018 17:51

Just going to leave this little Nige beaut here.

No notes (lots of stains tho Blush ), as it is utterly perfect. I’ve made it zillions of times and everyone loves it. It’s very good warm with custard.

Taffeta · 02/11/2018 17:59

I’ve recently bought Lateral Cooking by Niki Segnit and it has disturbed me greatly.

I need to read it another few times at least before I remotely understand it I think.

Potentially will change the way I cook forever...

FuzzyCustard · 02/11/2018 18:41

@FuzzyCustard

If it is not a treasonable Mn offence and social faux pas to refer to the past thread on as late as the 4th page of the new thread, can I commend you on your most fitting and poignant exit post, which said it all really

Well bless you shower. It is my first attempt at an exit post so I am both gratified and humbled to have it noted so!

FuzzyCustard · 02/11/2018 18:44

Ohhhh Sara Lee Chocolate Gateau.
I had forgotten that. How could I? It was indeed the pinnacle of cakiness and I want to see "Recreate a SL Choc Gat" as a GBBO challenge next year. (As long as I can be a judge. I know what it's lovely squidgy, squashy yumminess should taste like)

WereWolfcub · 02/11/2018 18:54

I love Nige Taffeta. I read his books just as books to read rather than cook books if you see what I mean

bookbook · 02/11/2018 19:26

I have a Yotam Ottolenghi book called 'Plenty" like that Taffeta - gorgeous to read, but haven't attempted anything out of it yet..
I do love Nigel Slater - will have to give that one a go.
One of the best non meat recipes I do - which everyone likes is in one of Delias books the chapter called The Winter Vegetarian , she does spinach with 4 cheeses cannelloni ( well , filled pancakes actually ), and it is lovely! If anyone wants that recipe, I will gladly share it here
Broccoli and cheese souffle ( also Delia) is a good standby here too - though I have to add new potatoes for DH, as he likes a lot of carbs !

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 02/11/2018 19:59

Another vote for Nigel here. His story telling is a lot better than Delia's.

I do not want to read about Delia's Xmas morning when I'm making bread sauce I just want what and how.

Fortunately I have cooked enough xmas dinners to commit such recipes to memory. Give or take.

We had chicken supreme for dinner from the same basic recipe I used for O level food and nutrition a very long time ago.

FreezerBird · 02/11/2018 21:47

The trick with Nigella is to make sure you never ever clap eyes on her on the telly.

I have (and love, and use) How to Eat, How to be a Domestic Goddess and the Christmas one. I have very deliberately never watched one of her progs because I fear I would then take against her.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/11/2018 21:56

I want that Delia recipe book.

And thank you to other posters.

Gremlins - I shall be very upset if you don't get through the psychological test to go on GBBO next year (obviously you'll ROCK the actual food bit - what with your Volcanic Yak and Mango Surprise etc).

So remember -

Quirky - OK

Psycho - Not OK

Sometimes the line is narrow . . . .
