We're only on series 4 but not sure what could possibly compare to Dexter, Deb, Matsuka, Quinn et al.

Any ideas for a similarly excellent series?

We've enjoyed Breaking Bad, Peaky Blinders (Tommoyyyyyyy!), The Alienist.

Tia.

Oh bill nighy Whitechapel Gollum is very good

PoesyCherish · 14/09/2018 12:57

Following with interest as I feel the same. Loved Dexter and haven't found anything that compares since

MrsBlondie · 14/09/2018 12:58

We watched Breaking Bad after Dexter and loved them both.
I still miss Dexter!

TammySwansonTwo · 14/09/2018 13:57

I loved Dexter until around S5... after that it’s a disaster and it’s definitely gone down in my estimation overall.

I’ve just watched Good Girls on Netflix and it was really good, much better than I expected.

Bates Motel starts out a bit lightweight, but the last 2-3 seasons are incredible.

bedtimestories · 14/09/2018 14:24

Watched all the series and now I'm reading the books. It did get rubbish after series 4 but it picked up again but wasn't the same for me, but I was glad I watched till the end

Hannibal is on Netflix now. Love Mads Mikkelsen. Goliath is fab starring BB Thornton, love him, might be Amazon though. Didn't like SoA and thought Safe was OK. Been Rewatching Sopranos and The Wire on Amazon. I need something dark but not sci-fi / imaginary next whilst waiting for Mindhunter.

TammySwansonTwo · 14/09/2018 16:04

S1 of Goliath was great, but S2 ended rather strangely. Bit disappointing.

Hannibal is amazing but S3 isn’t on Netflix

Definitely get hold of The Shield (comes on to Netflix sometimes and is perfect)

pumpkin1209 · 14/09/2018 16:15

It's already been mentioned - Sons Of Anarchy! I loved it. Never been so emotionally attached to characters in a tv show.

Wentworth is brilliant too

pumpkin1209 · 14/09/2018 16:17

P.s I really wouldn't bother watching the last season of Dexter. Absolute crap and let down the rest of the show. S4 was the best season imo.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 14/09/2018 16:37

A show just started (literally aired the pilot a few days ago) called You. About a stalker who works in a bookshop...stalks a girl. I found it very good and a dexter vibe. Inner monologue and how id imagine stalkers think people do things for their attention. It has the main guy character from gossip girl, the writer. Think his name is Dan in it?

BaconAndAvocado · 14/09/2018 19:16

What's The Shield about?

OP posts:
LaLaLolly · 14/09/2018 19:22

The West Wing and The Shield are amazing.

The Shield was based on true events and I think it's unbelievably good; the characters are so complex and the stories so interesting and well written.
You find yourself cheering and hating the same character in the space of minutes... and back again!

QuilliamCakespeare · 14/09/2018 19:31

Yes because it's goes massively downhill after series 4 Sad

TammySwansonTwo · 14/09/2018 20:08

The Shield is fundamentally about the LAPD and a group of amoral, dodgy officers who “don’t play by the rules”; which sounds really cliché but that show is where the cliches came from. The writing is absolutely incredible, the characters are so well formed, and it’s just mind blowingly good. Give it 2-3 episodes and I guarantee you’ll be hooked. And in fact it’s one of the few shows that doesn’t overrun, it just gets better with each season and ends brilliantly. I am really jealous of anyone who hasn’t seen it because I think it’s as close to perfect as you can get.

TammySwansonTwo · 14/09/2018 20:09

(sorry, I meant it’s where lots of TV cliches originated, not that one in particular)

bilbodog · 14/09/2018 20:47

Have you watched fargo? Theres a film from ages ago then 3 series - brilliant!

Cheesymonster · 15/09/2018 20:05

Is You based on the book?

BaconAndAvocado · 16/09/2018 19:33

Where would I find The Shield?
We have Netflix, Amazon Prime and a dodgy Firestick.
We don't go out much.

OP posts:
PawneeParksDept · 16/09/2018 19:51

You might have to buy it on the Firestick

PawneeParksDept · 16/09/2018 19:54

Good news @BaconAndAvocado it's 10p per episode on Firestick

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 16/09/2018 22:04

Just a heads up for my pick: "You" netflix has the rights to international distribution and its been commissioned for a season 2. No idea when itll be on netflix though
