Did anybody watch the first episode tonight? Dysfunctional in more ways than one.

OP posts:
EvilRingahBitch · 14/09/2018 17:51

I’m most of the way through the first episode. I hadn’t clocked that he was meant to be 15 at all! I thought he was maybe 19! Bloody hell.

It’s gripping stuff, beautifully directed.

designonaut · 14/09/2018 18:54

Great story and beautiful to watch. I'm trying not to watch it all at once on Iplayer

EvilRingahBitch · 14/09/2018 22:41

I’m the only person in the house watching it so when I get a chance I’m binging for my life.

Just started on episode 2. I love Brendan Fraser so much and am so pleased to see him working! (Watch out for that tree George!) (I may have had some Wine)

dameofdilemma · 19/09/2018 21:03

I really like it, great acting, well paced and each episode is varied and keeps your interest.
Bit puzzled by the negative reviews in the broadsheets but then they raved about Game Of Thrones and Breaking Bad which bored me to tears.

Lottapianos · 19/09/2018 22:12

I love it too. It's extremely enjoyable.i haven't seen Brendan Fraser in anything for years. He's still pretty hunky Wink

fussychica · 19/09/2018 22:14

Oh dear I fell asleep halfway through episode 2. What happened?

FawnDrench · 19/09/2018 22:22

Thought it was brilliant - just odd enough to be quite mesmerising.

Was that Charlotte Riley playing DS's secretary?

Lottapianos · 19/09/2018 22:29

Yes it was Fawn

Jellykat · 19/09/2018 22:35

Loving it, and cant understand why no-one else i know is watching..

FawnDrench · 19/09/2018 22:47

Thank you Lotta - the credits at the end just whizzed by and I couldn't read them at all.

HelloMist · 23/09/2018 01:08

Just watched ep 3 on iPlayer (no spoilers as don't think it's been shown on TV yet). Enjoying it but found it shocking stuff. It felt very film-like in the visuals, music and the choppy timeline. I wanted to watch the next one but it was getting late so I came here instead. Really surprised this thread isn't getting more posts!

Mc180768 · 23/09/2018 12:35

I have watched all of this. Donald Sutherland has made the show and Hillary Swank played Gail Getty well.

The sadness that stalked this family is immense. Overall, Trust is watchable and despite some adaptations, it's reflective of some of the events during that time.

DesdemonasHandkerchief · 23/09/2018 14:56

This is one of the best things I've watched in a long time. I'm also surprised it hasn't had more buzz, the only person I know who's watching it is my mother. I've binge watched it all, episode 5 had me on the edge of my seat. I didn't know the story so for me the kidnapping plot was very suspenseful, I'm glad I didn't read this thread or any other info about it that contained spoilers. I'd recommend if you're reading this and don't know the outcome don't go back through the thread till you've watched it all.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/09/2018 23:18

I've been watching this for hours after reading this thread, it's brilliant.

diddl · 07/10/2018 14:50

I've only just started to watch.

Did JPG3 really try to steal something does anyone know?

Has anyone been to the Getty Villa &/or Getty Centre?

After reading on here, I'm quite disappointed with the looks of the actor playing JPG3Blush

It is a sad/disturbing story, isn't it?

I think I read somewhere that JPG said that he would rather have had a long lasting relationship that his fortune.

I doubt that it was the money that made him unfaithful though!

DesdemonasHandkerchief · 08/10/2018 15:31

There's quite a lot of license taken with the story diddl, I imagine the stealing incident didn't happen or is unproved. When you've watched it all there's a 1974 Rolling Stone article available via Goggle that sheds a bit more light on what actually happened.
Sutton Place is still in Guildford but they weren't allowed to film there (private house not open to the public) so used a mansion in Essex instead.
Have to disagree with you about Harris Dickinson (JPGIII actor) I think he's luminous in the role. (Dirty old woman that I am.)

DesdemonasHandkerchief · 08/10/2018 15:43

Correction it wasn't filmed in Essex but at* Hatfield House, a country house set in a large park on the eastern side of the town of Hatfield, Hertfordshire. The same house was used to double as Sutton Place for the 2017 feature film about the Getty kidnapping All The Money In The World*.

StableGenius · 10/10/2018 15:01

I've just finished watching this (will do my damnedest not to spoil for those watching at BBC2 pace) and am really surprised it hasn't had more love. This autumn schedule is crowded with BAFTA-hopeful dramas though, so I guess it's been a bit trampled underfoot.

As somebody too young to remember the kidnapping as a news story, knowing only the 'most memorable/lurid' aspect of it, I've been absolutely gripped by this. I'm not a binger by nature, but I found myself watching one or two episodes a day, needing to know what was going to happen next (and resisting the strong temptation to Google).

It's a fantastic mix of suspense, tragedy, drama and offbeat humour (so a bit like Trainspotting...) Unusually, I found the two different settings - the old man's mansion and Rome - equally fascinating, so no sitting through duller scenes wishing they'd get back to the action elsewhere, as so often happens.

Also - excellent acting. I loved 'Bullimore' the butler. And developed a slightly disturbing crush on the psychotic but very, very attractive Primo Blush.

diddl · 14/10/2018 16:07

I've also just finished watching & did enjoy it overall-it really is a Shakesperean tragedy, isn't it?

I do understand why there was a lot of focus on J Paul Getty as he was the billionaire who refused to pay.

Would have loved more about Gail & J Paul Getty Jr tbh though, plus JPG Jr & Talitha Pol in Marrakech.

elephantoverthehill · 14/10/2018 16:22

I am really enjoying this series too. I have only just found this thread. I am watching in 'real time', I love having a programme to look forward to and request no disturbance when it is on. Grin

StableGenius · 14/10/2018 16:31

diddl I wondered why Paul and Talitha's story was so skimmed over too. I read somewhere that this is meant to be the first of 3 Getty-inspired dramas, set at different points in history and jumping across timelines, so I'm hoping there'll be more coverage of Talitha and Gail etc in one of those.

If they get made...

diddl · 14/10/2018 16:46

I would have thought that his parents splitting & then maybe becoming focussed on new partners-& especially the "Marakkech scene" might have been a big factor in how things evolved as they did.

I mean 15, living with 2 older women & doing drugs & supposedly running up debts of his own & theirs??

They were just saying "the 15yr old will pay".

And then SPOILER!!!

To marry one of them??

That's all kinds of needing therapy-if true, of course!

IPityThePontipines · 16/10/2018 17:19

I've watched it all now, really enjoyed it.

Talitha Jol seems to have been a muse for Patrick Lichfield back in the day condenaststore.com/featured/paul-getty-jr-and-talitha-getty-on-a-terrace-patrick-lichfield.html

On a more shallow note, I love Gail's flat.

diddl · 16/10/2018 20:48

They all seemed to be living quite a lifestyle somehow, yet not working, didn't they?

elephantoverthehill · 17/10/2018 21:57

Ruthless.
