Did anybody watch the first episode tonight? Dysfunctional in more ways than one.

Enjoying it very much so far. No one is that likeable though!

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 13/09/2018 00:05

Did anyone see the recent film? He wasn't likeable in that either.

I normally love Donald Sutherland but I'm not feeling it here. Anna chancellor iseems to just be doing an impression of Kirsten Scott Thomas playing mrs Churchill in Darkest Hour.

Lottapianos · 13/09/2018 06:39

I really enjoyed it. Donald Sutherland looks absolutely marvellous and pretty terrifying. Yes, dysfunctional doesn't even begin to cover it

placemats · 13/09/2018 07:11

I enjoyed watching it and will continue (perhaps online). Fascinating insight into the family dynamics although the story of the young JPGIII was terribly tragic.

wowfudge · 13/09/2018 08:31

I've worked for someone wealthy whose kids were a disappointment to them - very sad as it's often down to the parent being controlling then wondering why the kids can't stand on their own two feet. When you're as rich as Getty was you can do what you want pretty much.

I thought it was great. I dimly remember the news story (was very young at the time). Looking forward to next week! Donald Sutherland was magnificent.

LightastheBreeze · 13/09/2018 09:29

I liked it. I think it said the whole lot was on iplayer now. I though Donald Sutherland was great in it

wowfudge · 13/09/2018 10:18

Yes - Donald Sutherland was excellent.

Wasn’t sure what to expect, but I enjoyed it. I watched it with DS, 19, and he liked it too.

I can clearly remember when it actually happened, I was about 14 and it was quite upsetting. It is a real morality tale about the perils of being so rich, but I think that Paul the son ended up finding a sort of peace and became a UK citizen and a great patron of the art.

IcedPurple · 13/09/2018 17:30

I enjoyed it. I know almost nothing about the story so will be trying my best to avoid spoilers, though I know I'm not good at that!

I found it strangely comforting in a weird way, seeing all these super-rich people who are utterly miserable!

placemats · 13/09/2018 18:53

Wow Well, I think being barefoot and rocking up as a fifteen year old barely dressed might ring alarm bells? Certainly his mother thought so and she was effectively pushed out of the family. And when it came to the tragic crunch, it was JPGIII's mum who looked after him. She even had to sue his dad for money.

placemats · 13/09/2018 18:55

Avoiding spoilers?

You might as well say that about watching the life of Princess Margaret.

placemats · 13/09/2018 18:57

Spoiler alert

JPGIII's son Balthazar, as a married man with four children, was involved in an affair with Sienna Miller.

midsomermurderess · 13/09/2018 19:08

Little about the Gettys is likeable. But the young lad, and he was only 16 when he was kidnapped, never recovered from the trauma. He took a massive overdose only a few years later that totally buggered him up. It's so sad, knowing what is coming.
I'm enjoying it but I do like Danny Boyle and I always enjoy his choice of music. Even if it is a bit 'Homes Under the Hammer' obvious so far.

wowfudge · 13/09/2018 19:12

HUTH - I thought it worked without being quite so cheesy Grin

placemats · 13/09/2018 19:20

Let's be honest though. £6000 in the early 70s was a lot of money and would have bought most people their home outright. This was a 16 year old with those debts.

placemats · 13/09/2018 19:23

15 almost 16 when kidnapped and 16 when released.

Can you imagine it now?

IcedPurple · 13/09/2018 20:03

Did anyone think the actor playing JP Getty lll - though excellent - looked rather too old to pass for a 15 year old?

As I said above, I don't know anything about the story so when I saw the scene where Paul's 'concubines' were feeling guilty for lusting over John Paul lll in the pool, I was a bit puzzled. He didn't look much younger than them! But when it turned out he was actually a teenager, it all made more sense. Mind you, I don't think they were too fussy about such trivial matters as age back in the 70s!

HouseOfMouse · 13/09/2018 20:21

I was aware of this when it happened but was very young (8 or 9). Extraordinary that he was a magazine centrefold at 15/16. The 70’s really were a different place.

midsomermurderess · 13/09/2018 21:41

I agree that the actor looks too old for JPGIII but it would strain credulity today that to see an age-appropriate actor and accept that he was living it up in Rome with coke and champagne. I also think he is probably too buff and toned. Did people really work out like that then? And as for being in Playgirl, blooming heck.

LizzieSiddal · 13/09/2018 21:59

I loved it, thought Donald Sutherland was mesmerising.

IcedPurple · 14/09/2018 09:45

Did he really do the 'Playboy' centrefold? Full-frontal?

And IIRC, even though it wasn't full-frontal, Samantha Fox was only 17 when she first did Page 3.

theredjellybean · 14/09/2018 09:48

Loved it.. The young actor playing jpg3 is so beautiful.

IcedPurple · 14/09/2018 13:49

He is lush, isn't he?

Like the 'concubines' mentioned above, I felt a bit pervy about fancying him when I found out he was only supposed to be 15! But then I checked out the actor's Wiki entry and seems he's about 22 - still young enough to be my son, but at least a legal adult lol!

HouseOfMouse · 14/09/2018 14:07

It was an Italian mag called “Playmen” (along the same lines as Playboy) and he was “nude”. I don’t know whether the pics have survived - I think the magazine itself is long gone. Still weird to think about it now though, it seems so inappropriate from a 2018 viewpoint.
