Let’s get June out of there!

At least - Emily stabbing AL then getting whisked away just as June was escaping was one example of how far fetched it was but it is what it is.

In my head it went like this:
Emily attacked AL
C Lawrence had to arrange to get Emily out which meant contacting the Martha Army.
Perhaps Rita, being a soldier, heard a rescue was happening and asked if her friend and baby could go with as it would be their only chance. So June only got the chance because Emily attacked AL.

@kashleesi June has the support of her Martha who is also feeling guilt over Eden. We don't know how many Martha's are involved, or how long it's been active

MazDazzle · 12/08/2018 23:23

That seems likely Sister.

inquiquotiokixul · 12/08/2018 23:24

Next season we had better ensure that the thread starts with a very very simple explanation of the rules of a UK pace thread. Not sure what IQ level to pitch it at.

Comment or description about something that hasn't yet been broadcast in the UK (even if it will be broadcast in the next 10 minutes) = spoiler, not allowed.

Comment or description about something that has been broadcast in the UK (even if it was only broadcast 3 seconds ago) = not a spoiler, very much allowed.

Whining about how mean people are for explaining this = just really really boring and an easy way to convince people that you have nothing worthwhile to say.

WellWhoKnew · 12/08/2018 23:24

I usually watch 30 mins behind, and skim read the comments during ad breaks. Mostly, I only read a few at a time - I really enjoy the input of others to enhance what I've just watched.

Many of them are of the "no" "crikey" type so it's easy to see if I've read on beyond what I've watched and can stop reading til I've caught up.

That's a world away from someone putting the entire plot down.

Anyone else want Season 3 NOW?

I've read digital spy's anticipation....

HannahnotAgnes · 12/08/2018 23:24

Now that it's been mentioned, I think I remember reading on one of the first threads that the tv series deliberately stayed away from the racial aspects of the book so that the effects on women weren't minimised or derailed.

Not sure how true that is, but it was definitely a comment early on (series 1).

WitchSharkadder · 12/08/2018 23:24

Cagey, in the book people of colour are labelled ‘children of ham’ and sent off.

The series creators decided to not use this aspect of the book as excluding black actors was racist. Commander Horace is black, as is Moira and the handmaid Oferic who is a regular extra.

I quite like the fact that they abandoned the race element. It may not be completely realistic but it’s good to have a show that only focuses on the oppression of women.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 12/08/2018 23:24

Yes, I understood it as June only getting the opportunity because an extraction was happening anyway

MazDazzle · 12/08/2018 23:26

The thread didn’t have a spoiler issue, it had/has a troll issue.

WellWhoKnew · 12/08/2018 23:27

I'm glad they removed the racial aspect for real world reasons although I have to suspend belief because I firmly believe it would be a factor ordinarily.

user1475530080 · 12/08/2018 23:27

The directors decided with Margaret Atwood (author of the book) that the main focus should be in the oppression of women and how fertility often trumps all other issues in Gilead. By not including people of various races, the audience might question why their point of view isn't being shown and would distract from the overall message of the plot. According to IMDB anyway Grin

WhyDoesItAlways · 12/08/2018 23:27

I thought June looked satanic at the end but think that was just the red reflection.

SisterNotCisTerf · 12/08/2018 23:28

Surely they can’t just drive to Canada? There are checkpoints and a handmaid with a baby rings all sorts of alarm bells. You can’t export babies from Gilead! Grin they must have to go on foot to cross the border like Moira did.

OMG! A Martha Underground Railway Network. Never saw that coming, mind you, nor did the Gilead high command.

What an episode, talk about cliffhangers, my fingernails will never recover.

I assume June has gone back for Hannah, and maybe for whatever is left of Nick once Fred has finished with him. hope Emily and Nichole make it this time.

I need a stiff brandy after that, or a mug of hot milk and honey.

CageyBee · 12/08/2018 23:28

Witch thank you. I haven’t yet read the book but tend to agree with you as I have so enjoyed feminist television. However I look forward to the novel and expect that the race element as well will be even more unsettling and upsetting.

Commenting what happens in the book is a spoiler though surely? There's nothing wrong with my IQ level thanks I did not once say that no one should comment on the thread as everything was spoilers I commented saying that any comment could technically spoil it for anyone. What Cinderella did was wrong but as I've pointed out before it was what Cinderella did not what I did.

Why you're jumping on it I really don't know. Maybe you don't have anything to say?

llangennith · 12/08/2018 23:29

Like any sensible person I didn't come on this thread till I'd watched the programme, as I'd recorded it.
I was a bit confused at some parts but thanks to this thread I'm a lot clearer now. Still not entirely clear though...🙈

WellWhoKnew · 12/08/2018 23:30

My theory on CL is that Cora (and her eye injury) are the key for him turning against Gilead. Perhaps she was a student of his or is a relation. After they removed her eye...

So I'm thinking he's a bad guy going good. That's said my last theory re setting up Nick/June being caught was completely wrong.

inquiquotiokixul · 12/08/2018 23:30

PP have occasionally referred to the books in the plural. I am only aware of one book. There wasn't a sequel was there?

psicat · 12/08/2018 23:31

It's a brilliant powerful book CageyBee, you'll love it. I must go reread it yet again!

I admit though it left me really wanting a sequel so I'm loving this series even more.

ALSO didn't June finally tell Nick she loved him? That was such a lovely moment when he finally got to hold his daughter 😭

SisterNotCisTerf · 12/08/2018 23:32

I do worry about series 3 though. I felt there were a couple of holes in series 2, they could be overlooked because they were fairly minor. I just hope it doesn't get silly

SisterNotCisTerf · 12/08/2018 23:33

She did psicat, it was lovely. Like a perfect new family moment.

Agree Sister or I'll lose the will to live

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 12/08/2018 23:35

@inquiquotiokixul

The old GOT threads always started with a lengthy "rules" post, it just proved necessary, unfortunately.

There's been covert as well as overt twattery over the weeks I feel too...

I became completely spoiled from maybe Week 6 onwards. In part through clicking on the wrong link and then via choice.

I always took care then, never to speculate or comment on a speculation as I knew for a fact whether it was right or wrong.

I felt personally (though I'm not pointing the figure) that not everyone was as circumspect about that and as the weeks went by I felt I could tell the difference between "obviously speculating" and "speculating are we? Aye, ok then" I could see them, and don't think I'm alone.

Twats are gonna twat unfortunately

It's a great shame this formerly great thread will end on such a sour note.
