So, classic Eastenders starts airing on the UKTV Drama channel from tomorrow! Two episodes from noon, and they’ll also be on UKTV catchup.

Use this thread to talk about Den, Angie, Arthur, poodle perms, poor fashion choices and Ethel’s Willy.

Love Ethel!!!

tobee · 31/10/2018 01:32

Michelle's bump!!! It's just like a cushion stuffed up her top. Couldn't they do better than that?

AamdC · 31/10/2018 08:45

Quite deceptive arnt they the houses of Albert square they dont look much but can be converted into several flats as and when needed and also come and go as per charcarchters Grin

dingdongdigeridoo · 31/10/2018 09:29

Stacey and Martin’s house, formerly Pat’s place, is like the tardis. You can fit 10-12 adults in there at any time without them complaining about lack of space. The Vic also has magical bedrooms that appear as needed.

Hes like a pantomine baddie ,Nick Cotton 😂😂

BrennieGirl · 31/10/2018 18:47

I don't know if I imagined it, but in this afternoons episode Last Christmas was playing in the pub. I thought it was supposed to be spring time not Christmas. And then later Angie was arranging daffodils!

AamdC · 31/10/2018 19:05

Yeah i heard it too oddGrin

tobee · 01/11/2018 00:49

Gordon Bennett Pauline's carpet. Give you a migraine!!

I remember that look Sharon's school uniform:- short skirt and light grey thick tights. Wtf were we thinking?

AamdC · 01/11/2018 08:12

Im slightly younger than sharon (only about 4 yrs) it waa all rolly down socks and hair stuck up like a pineapple by about a can of hairspray Grin

AamdC · 01/11/2018 12:35

The hypocrisy. 'Dens' allowed to have an affair for years and get 16 year old girls pregnant but God forbid Angie does the same Hmm

dingdongdigeridoo · 01/11/2018 13:47

Speaking of music, if you ever listen out during scenes in the market, they play the same song over and over. It’s like a bassy riff that repeats over and over. You can even hear it in the caff and laundrette at times. It’s very weird.

pinkchampagne1 · 01/11/2018 17:11

Yes I noticed that same music seems to be booming all the time. You can hear it in some of the houses too. It would drive you mad!

tobee · 01/11/2018 22:02

You confused me there for a bit, @AamdC, talking about rolly down socks 🐩 🐩 🐩

siakcaci · 04/11/2018 00:52

brennie. I just watched that episode, 24th April 1986 it was aired, but Last Christmas was playing in the vic. I was raging at DH about how ridiculous it was!

gower4 · 04/11/2018 08:10

We're gearing up to Angie "I've got six months to live!!!"

dingdongdigeridoo · 04/11/2018 13:05

For a while, I thought the music was Peaches by the Stranglers. It sounds like that riff. I wonder if it’s because modern speakers are so good that it picks up all the background noises? So maybe it wasn’t as noticeable on 80s TV or something?

I can’t bloody wait for Angie and THE Xmas episode. I need to catch up though. Only just got past Southend. It’d be great to have the divorce papers Xmas episode on before Christmas so I can watch it on the day.

That last scene with Pauline in today's second episode was very well done.

My family were a bit like that in the 80's. Five kids, Dad often unemployed. My mum worked full time and kept everything together. There was never any money and lots of fights and tears so it really resonated with me.

So 30 odd years later, well done Wendy up in heaven or wherever you are.

auberbene · 05/11/2018 16:03

I completely agree @BrennieGirl

AamdC · 05/11/2018 16:43

Yes i agree Brennie Arthur is pissing me off , though i realise its not his fault hes in and out of work but he could do more around the house and with the baby!

tobee · 05/11/2018 19:57

The 80s were not a fun time for many families.

AamdC · 05/11/2018 20:13

I was at school for all of the 80,s i finshed high school in 1990 , my family were ok tbh but we didnt live in the south east and both my parents were in secure full time emplymemt , they both worked at the Gas board as it was than so we haf foriegn holidays etc , eastenders was llike another world to me. We were lucky suppose

Cutthedrivel · 05/11/2018 22:36

Last Christmas did hang around a while, though.
I organised a Valentines do for police civil staff that year and it was played there by request.
Markets and fairgrounds always play old music. In fact, the small fair at Dymchurch was still playing Althea & Donna last week.

gower4 · 06/11/2018 12:00

We've got Venice before the Christmas episodes! Exciting.

In my opinion, it never recovered once Den and Angie split up.

tobee · 06/11/2018 12:41

There's definitely a case for saying that. But I suppose the characters had to leave because they'd pretty much done everything, in terms of their relationship. Maybe it was too much about them and so most other storylines paled into insignificance.

gower4 · 06/11/2018 13:17

Yes, they were too large for the show really.

They were both incredibly charismatic actors and they feel a bit out of place in some ways.
