How does tonight Coronation Street help mums with postnatal depression?

Can't find a thread about this already so if there is one apologies.

How do you feel about the fact that Claire has been arested on the basis that she was sectioned due to Post natal depression.

When they first showed the fire last week the first thought I had was I bet they'll use her post natal depression against her.

Lots of women already suffer in silence because their afraid of the come back it could have so has tonight helped or hindered?

Probably not put it very well but there we go.

"I would expect them not to take an issue like pnd and deal with it so insensitively and incorrectly."

Would you? Ah you have a lot more faith in TV programming and possibly human nature in general than me, then

I am sorry for people who have been affected by this, btw

I am not saying you should not feel upset, more, kind of, well what do you expect from those sods?

FrannyandZooey · 29/05/2007 15:48

No it sounds shoddy beyond belief Fio

but what is more entertaining and shocking and exciting? The truth or a load of old cobblers? People don't watch soaps to get accurate information IMO they just want to be thrilled and appalled

I think to be fair to the scriptwriters, they are probably trying to show how dreadful the prejudice against women with PND is.

Thing is, they're not showing it very well.

Maybe someone should send the producers this thread

TootyFrooty · 29/05/2007 15:54

Of course I would expect the producers of a soap opera to behave responsibly when it comes to issues such as pnd. I don't expect crap misinformed tv at every turn. Although it's certainly what we get a lot of the time.

Have coronation street ever had a storyline where a baby has been born and nothing tragic has happened to the baby or the family?

LOL @ cornsilk. Don't be so ridiculous

GiantSquirrelSpotter · 29/05/2007 16:02

Hmm, am racking my brains Cornsilk...

LoveAngel · 29/05/2007 16:04

I hate Corrie anyway, and this has made me even more contemptuous of it. Who wrote the script? Someone informed on postnatal issues in the age of Queen Victoria? FFS!

Very, very poorly researched.

(Find the actress who plays Claire incredibly annoying. Just had to share that - aaah, feel better now).

GiantSquirrelSpotter · 29/05/2007 16:06

Claire is so irritating

And I've never understood why she has to have those terrible glasses. Although i think they've got rid of them now, haven't they?

Haven't read the whole thread as desperately trying to tear self away to eat, but is this the same storyline where ages ago she pushed the pram into the road? If so, I think it probably hinders awareness/understanding of PND - for a while I was convinced PND meant I would try and kill my baby.

divastrop · 29/05/2007 17:13

i think alot of people believe what they see in soaps.i know that where i live now there is a widely help belief that all sothereners are miserable gits who speak with mockney accents thanks to eastenders(i got called a cockney for the first 5 yaers of living here even though im from essex).in the same way,my sister has always judged northerners by what shes seen in coronation street.

the actors who play villains get verbally abused in the street, when a character is wrongfully imprisoned the press run a 'free so and so' campaign.people do take soaps very seriously,as sad as that may be,so i think they have a responsibility to at least get their facts straight.

by the way,i think one of the soaps should run a really shocking storyline, where somebody gets married and nothing goes wrong, then gets pregnant(by their husband)and goes on to have a normal pregnancy and gives birth to a healthy baby.it would make such a change..
