Who do you think are the worst parents on tv?

The question came to me because I am watching The Americans Season 5 and I think Philip and Elizabeth are just dreadful parents to Paige and Henry

In the early series it was just deceit and neglect but as time goes on they just narrow focus on Paige and damage her and basically don't seem to care about Henry at all, when they find out he is gifted, Elizabeth is borderline sneery about it because it doesn't fit with their "Henry is a bit of a waster" narrative

I also hate Adam Braverman on Parenthood, though several scenes regarding his autistic son are very well acted, he is consistently a massive wanker to eldest child Haddie, to his siblings and his wife and is in general an arsehole.

He will often disregard Max's boundaries, behaviour management strategies and schedule if it doesn't suit him and what he needs regardless of how it impacts Max, whilst at the same time throwing massive hissy fits at anyone he thinks hasn't made adequate adjustment for Max regardless of whether this is accurate or fair. He gives me the absolute rage even though it's a great show and fictional Blush

The Gellar parents treatment of Monica though played for laughs is really not funny at all

Mind you, Colin’s dad in Secret Garden was even shittier than Sarah’s dad. Talk about abandonment. Poor Mary has to do all the fixing as a female of course, then once Colin’s up and going and happy - dad comes back.

Frank Gallagher from Shameless (US) is hands down the worst. Debbie is pretty terrible too.

Ross Gellar -- where did Ben go in the last season of Friends?

Peter + Lois Griffin. Treat Meg like a dog.

Emily + Richard Gilmore. No love/respect for their daughter, will throw money at every problem and hope it goes away.

All the parents on Lost were pretty terrible too.

I have to disagree about Adam Braverman though, OP! I thought he was pretty great Grin

Sorry I know it's a film and not TV but Kevin's parents in Home Alone.

So obsessed with themselves and have so many hectic kids around them they don't even notice one is missing...

Nooo : @schoty77

Examples : Storming round to Haddies boyfriends house barging past his parents and dragging her downstairs

Banning her from seeing Alex from the Shelter for obvious prejudices

Trying to ban her from going to uni because he didn’t want her to get a loan

Missing Nora’s birth because he was at Mister Rays house

Getting annoyed with Max because he doesn’t show enough interest in him

Disrupting Max’s schedule for his own benefit but screaming at anyone else who tries

Sneering at the Lessings as beneath his friendship

The time Sarah and Hank rightly denied Max the use of the printer and he tore a strip off them

Not wanting the children’s entertainer at his autistic child’s party because he was also autistic!

The time Kristina ran for the council and he massively patronised

The time he became a self appointed headmaster and tried to blame the girl his son was harassing for being unwilling to be his girlfriend

Redeeming moments :

The car scene - one of the best scenes in TV ever

His punch ups! Crosby and the guy in the shop

His dancing

He’s still a massive arsehole though

Arrested Development for me - George Sr and Lucille, Lindsay and Tobias, and Gob are all terrible parents on so many levels: Even the 'straight guy' Michael is quite crap, he's so domineering over George Michael. Though one of the things that I love about the show is that it's completely ridiculous but smacks of the truth of dysfunctional families
