Netflix Subtitled Gems

A thread to make a note of foreign language subtitled gems you’ve chanced upon on Netflix.

Chalay Thay Saath Really gentle romance / cultures collide road trip travelogue in Urdu and Chinese. The scenery and cinematography is stunning - set in the far north of Pakistan on the border with China. There’s drama, warmth, heart, music. The colours are super-saturated, which works well with the austere mountain backdrops. A wonderful escape from real life for a couple of hours. Star

Let’s be having yours!

That sounds intriguing Burnt - will check it out.

I recommend Fauda, an Israeli drama about the Palestine conflict. Surprised it hasn’t already been suggested.

OvaHere · 05/08/2018 23:35

El Ministerio Del Tiempo is very good, it's a Spanish historical sci-fi/time travel theme.

sassolino · 05/08/2018 23:53

Magnificent century is a splendid costume drama about the life of Sultan Suleiman, and his harem.
Another series about the Royal harem is Empresses in the Palace.

From the crime drama Bordertown was good, such an unusual protagonist.
Enjoyed two recent Russian crime series - Silver spoon, and The sniffer.

Call my Agent

In French and very funny.

boatyardblues re episode 9 of Mr Sunshine; I didn’t even spot the coffee placement on first viewing so went back & yes it is obvious once you’re looking. I googled & the coffee company sponsor this show & also a couple of others by the same writers. Have started watching one of them - Goblin- and there is the same coffee placement!
Am now up to date on Mr S and frustrated at having to wait for new episodes!

boatyardblues · 07/08/2018 13:44

Oh Betty, its so nice to have someone to share the pain. Smile I will be away for the next couple of weekends, so not able too keep pace - I will duck out of this thread until I catch up, but will hlad to compare notes then.

I can't read Korean so didn't realise what it was! Blush & I have to focus on the subtitles.
I have fallen down a kdrama rabbit hole.

boatyardblues · 07/08/2018 17:37

I can’t read Korean either! If I recall at least one word (COFFEE in big letters) was English with a .com for good measure. Soooo contemporary to 1905... Grin

Also, all the “hey, check out this exciting new drink introduced by the Westerners” scenes make sense now I know about the sponsorship.

Another vote for Occupied

boatyardblues · 07/08/2018 19:30

I enjoyed Occupied when it was on Sky. Mind you, not much of a stretch to imagine it happening, which mean it was unsettling too. Are they making any more of it?

I now have a much larger Watch List on Netflix - thanks.

I would add Lava Field to this, a short Icelandic series (crime).

boatyardblues · 13/08/2018 09:47

Lava Field had some great scenery and a surprise - the lead (Icelandic) actress is Elizabeth in Poldark. She does English aristocrat vey convincingly!

I loved The Rain (Danish).
Also watched Dark and enjoyed it. Occupied was brilliant. Loved it, but couldn't get in to Noble.

Moknicker · 18/08/2018 22:41

Thanks for all the great suggestions.

Dark - obviously
Hotel Beau Sejour

Tabula Rasa
Secret superstar
Salt Mango Tree
Narcos
La Case De Plata

Perdida is worth a watch, an Argentinian thriller with a female detective as the lead

chickedychicked · 11/09/2018 20:25

Has anyone watched The forest/La foret? I'm partway through watching lad case de papel but started watching The forest and I'm a little bit hooked but only on episode 3, not sure to carry on or not.

Bea · 04/10/2018 20:55

It's a guilty pleasure but "GOOD MORNING CALL" is hilarious in a disturbing way... Japanese teen manga rom com... Fascinating to see how Japan does teen scene... Frightening as the main "hero" is a complete idiot and lovely female character just let's herself be treated like dirt.. It's odd... Goes against my feminist ethics... But strangely absorbing and quite sweet... A very guilty pleasure! Blush

boatyardblues · 04/10/2018 23:32

That sounds like a goid pick Bea - I need a break from Kdrama (Betty & I are gradually filling a separate thread with our Kdrama picks.)
