Netflix Subtitled Gems

A thread to make a note of foreign language subtitled gems you’ve chanced upon on Netflix.

Chalay Thay Saath Really gentle romance / cultures collide road trip travelogue in Urdu and Chinese. The scenery and cinematography is stunning - set in the far north of Pakistan on the border with China. There’s drama, warmth, heart, music. The colours are super-saturated, which works well with the austere mountain backdrops. A wonderful escape from real life for a couple of hours. Star

Let’s be having yours!

El ministerio del tiempo (may be spelt wrong?) It is great. Original Spanish version that Timeless is based on. Quite humurous and gentle going in parts, less guns, violence and shouting than Timeless.

The same sky
East:West drama with plenty of politics but also social and emotional drama
Set in 1974

I didn't like the second series of 3%. The Melanie/creepy boss story line gave me the heebie geebies.
We're enjoying Bordertown. It's Finnish. The language sounds really different to the other Nordic languages. I love the sound of Danish/Swedish in The Bridge because it's so mellifluous.
The Dark was brilliant. Really kept me guessing.

I was talking to a Finn about this recently. He said Finnish was in a different family to most other European languages, but includes Hungarian and Estonian.

Love per Square Foot - romance set in Mumbai. Very enjoyable.

I just finished watching Dukhtar after it was recommended here. I'm glad I watched it.
pashtun tribes in Pakistan are known to marry off their young girls, they don't follow laws or rules of the rest of the country.
it was an insightful movie.

Will be trying out more of the movies mentioned on this thread soon.

ducked12 · 15/07/2018 22:51

oh and I enjoyed the invisible guest, a Spanish thriller, it had a few predictable twists but all in all an enjoyable movie.
Boy missing another Spanish one was very good, turned out to have a very different ending to what I thought.

agedknees · 22/07/2018 20:30

Just binge watched Bordertown (Finnish). It’s really good and gruesome.

implantsandaDyson · 04/08/2018 09:09

I loved Bordertown. I’ve just finished Sacred Games, it was well worth a watch, really enjoyed it.

I am well stuck into Mr Sunshine on Netflix now and loving it.

If anyone else is watching, am I imaging the stonking great coffee brand placement in the Glory Hotel restaurant in episode 9 or did it really happen? For the uninitiated, it was about as subtle as seeing the McDonalds sign in a street scene in an Austen adaptation or Poldark. Most peculiar.

I’ve started watching Stranger. It’s good but I have to be unusually wakeful as the dialogue/subtitles nip along & you need to pay attention to the subtext. It’s a bit of a workout on school nights.

Ooh boatyardblues I have been saving Mr Sunshine up I’m glad it’s good may start watching it. I also found I had to concentrate on ‘Stranger’, but it was worth it. I really enjoyed ‘Black’, though it jumped the shark at the end, and also ‘Saimdang’ ( same actor from Black) although it was a little overwrought. ‘Life’ with the lead from ‘Stranger’ has just started which looks good. I am really enjoying finding out about Korean history & culture.

boatyardblues · 04/08/2018 22:10

Pleeeease watch Mr Sunshine Betty - I need someone to discuss it with. Grin

I am really enjoying finding out about Korean history & culture.

Having watched Me Sunshine, the US getting involved in the Korean war in the ‘50s - which always puzzled me - makes more sense.

boatyardblues two episodes in to Mr Sunshine and I am hooked! As usual there is so much going on I am a bit lost and will have to go back and watch the first episode again as I can't work out where the red-shirted rebel came from and Ae-sins family set-up.
Plus will need to read up a bit on the history as Joseon seems to lurch from an isolated traditional nation to one being thrust into modern society and fought over.

boatyardblues · 05/08/2018 08:42

If tou remember the shoot out with the rebels in the paper-walled house and the woman with the baby - that’s Ae-Sin’s mother & her father is one of the men who escaped through the basement.

Has anyone seen La Mante with Carole Bouquet? Serial killer thingie and very gruesome at times but really good. Thing is I can't remember if it was Netflix or Amazon Prime.

purplemunkey · 05/08/2018 08:49

Occupied, Nobel and The Rain are all good.

I always search out the foreign language series on Netflix, it's some of the best stuff on there. And yes yes to turning off the dubbing.

cheeseoverchocolate · 05/08/2018 08:53

bettys · 05/08/2018 09:46

Betty - I was being deliberately oblique to avoid spoilers. Maybe get your last post deleted?

Yes, a K-drama thread would be good. Something in the Rain was good and I’m dipping into Stranger and Live at the mo.

Viktoria is a superb herman movie made all the more fantastic by it having been filmed in a single take. Story of a Spanish girl getting mixed up in robbery gone wrong. Fantastic.

burnttoastandmarmalade · 05/08/2018 15:54

*German!

bettys · 05/08/2018 16:20

Oops sorry it was in the first episode so not really too spoilery but will report.
