I thought Dylan's accent sounded Liverpool. So maybe N Wales is similar?

LillianaVess · 27/07/2018 07:31

Ahhh that makes sense now. My family are from South Wales I think so maybe I’m more used to their accents.

TheRealKimmySchmidt63 · 27/07/2018 19:21

Agreed my friend but I googled him and he is welsh born and bred but there were times when he really sounded like he was from Liverpool.

Great drama though really liked it - possibly expected a bit more of an ending but all in all was one of the best dramas I've seen this year.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/07/2018 18:42

"The North Wales accent is quite different to more Southern areas and it is a bit jarring, to me, that the accents aren't right for the area. "

The accents are a bit all over the place in this programme. I presume the producers just decided to get the best people for the job. Similar criticisms were levelled at Hinterland that the dialect spoken was more Carmarthenshire than Ceredigion.

The actor for Dylan is from north east Wales, but uses a north west Wales accent in this, very convincingly. The woman who plays his mother is a well-known actress from the south west and this is the first time I've seen her play with a north Walian accent. I thought it was quite good, but of course because I know her real voice, I did find some mistakes. In the Welsh version the student Megan and her friend are south Walians at uni in Bangor, which is pretty common, but I think that in the bilingual version they're not Welsh speakers.

Cadi's family is a mix, something a lot of people have criticised, though it does happen sometimes. The father and the younger daughter have north Walian accents while the two older daughters sound south Walian. I imagine that the family possibly lived in the south when the older daughters were small and then moved to the north, where the father is from. It's quite strange that in the bilingual version we're asked to believe that they're all first language Welsh speakers living in a mainly Welsh language area, but speak English to each other.

The other police officers are all north Walians, but a few of them sound second language. The little girl's accent is also a bit strange, as if she's from another area or a second language speaker, which she wouldn't be in real life growing up with the Welsh speaking father and grandmother and having no contact with the outside world at all. I presume we're meant to believe that she learnt English with television as it doesn't seem that she goes to school or plays with other children.

I hope that long explanation helps!

I wondered if Cadi's mother wasn't Welsh speaking/dad had lived away for a long time, or even if he had moved to Wales himself when younger.

AIUI there was the generation that never spoke English (my late FIL grew up in Mid Wales in the 20s and didn't know English till he left home), then the next generation weren't allowed to speak Welsh at school and that would be Cadi's father.

drspouse · 28/07/2018 20:23

(I don't recognise accents in Welsh but I know what my FIL sounded like in English, and people from his area).

Gwenhwyfar · 28/07/2018 22:43

"I wondered if Cadi's mother wasn't Welsh speaking/dad had lived away for a long time, or even if he had moved to Wales himself when younger."

No, the father speaks Welsh like a first language speaker who uses the language regularly.

"AIUI there was the generation that never spoke English (my late FIL grew up in Mid Wales in the 20s and didn't know English till he left home), then the next generation weren't allowed to speak Welsh at school and that would be Cadi's father."

No, I don't agree with that chronology. Cadi's father would be about 70, way after the Welsh Not finished. He might have had some lessons in English at school, but grew up in an area that 60 years ago would have been even more Welsh speaking than it is now and is clearly from a Welsh speaking family anyway.
Even in the bilingual version we hear him speak completely fluent, flowing Welsh to his grandchildren.

I think it's just a dramatic licence thing.

Just finished watching this on iPlayer and it's one of the best series I've watched in years. One question though, how did Mali escape? Did he let her go?

petrolpump28 · 29/07/2018 14:22

I enjoyed this mostly because of the language and some strong performances. In the end though it was just nasty mad man kills pretty girls.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 29/07/2018 16:37

Dylan told his mam he fell asleep when Mali escaped, presumably leaving the door unlocked.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/07/2018 22:22

" In the end though it was just nasty mad man kills pretty girls."

I don't know. We got to see his mother and his daughter so we found out a bit more about him than we do in many crime series. A bit like The Fall in that respect, although in The Fall the perpetrator's family seemed completely normal until we found out more about his childhood.

SuperSuperSuper · 30/07/2018 10:58

I've just finished this on catch up. What a phenomenal series. The actors who played villains Dylan and Iona were particularly superb, as was the Megan actor. It's a sign of a great drama when you feel sorry for a serial killer who has lost his job!

I am hoping for a second one. Not just for another case, but to explore Cadi's personal life a little more, and to see where (if anywhere) the sergeant's interest in the detectve constable goes.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/07/2018 22:12

I wondered how Mali escaped - he found her easily in van so must have been only few mins asleep

Bless the daughter setting girl free. She will have w much better loving life then living with NAN and dad

Sad her mum died in childbirth hence buried

Was sad the old ex employer who got stabbed then died

Was hoping police would get there in time :(

Over all very good

Just finished it.
I thought it was a great series but with a slightly unsatisfactory ending.

colouringinpro · 07/08/2018 22:28

I'm up to Episode 4. Actually finding it pretty heavy going, not sure I can face another 4!

BuzzLiteYear · 30/01/2020 11:17

Zombie-ish thread...

Just finished watching this on iPlayer, absolutely loved it.
If you like scandi-noir you'll love this.

rosegoldwatcher · 31/01/2020 13:19

@BuzzLiteYear - Series 2 is being advertised as 'coming soon' to BBC4. By my estimation (if it occupies the Saturday 9pm slot) it could be on as soon as a the 8th Feb.

BuzzLiteYear · 31/01/2020 13:37

Brilliant, can't wait. Thanks 🌹

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/02/2020 21:30

Hope so soon

Not next sat - just checked listings :(

rosegoldwatcher · 02/02/2020 11:03

According to BBC page it starts on Tuesday 11th Feb at 9pm - but only on BBC Wales. So it might be in Welsh! Guess we have to wait for the English language version?

BuzzLiteYear · 02/02/2020 12:28

In the version I've just watched most of the dialogue is in Welsh but some is in English.
Do you mean that they shoot the English language bits also in Welsh?
Confused.
I'd be happy to watch it all in Welsh with subtitles.

MollyButton · 02/02/2020 12:38

Agree if its on iPlayer - I'd happily watch the welsh version as long as there are English subtitles.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/02/2020 13:29

Happy to watch in welsh as well

As long as subtitles

I love all the Norwegian ones. Just on e 8 of wistling. Last one

That’s worth a watch if hasn’t seen

FintyTin · 02/02/2020 14:08

There was a trailer for it (English language version) on BBC4 last night. No air date though, just “Coming soon...”

rosegoldwatcher · 02/02/2020 16:23

@Blondeshavemorefun - Do you have Netflix? I can recommend a few Scandi-Noir series on there.
