First of all, I love Hugh, we've watched him from the start of River Cottage. Second I think a programme on obesity & raising awareness etc is a good thing.

However AIBU to feel like we've seen it all before? I'm sure I've watched almost exactly that programme with Jamie & Tom Kerridge & probably someone else too?

why have you linked those threads? Confused

Have a think about it. This problem is multi faceted. We have to look at ALL the changes that have occured in the past 30 to 40 years.

ppeat Apparently by far the most popular Krispy Kreme doughnut is the glazed ring. It has exactly 50% proportions of fat and carbs! That must have been researched!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 10/05/2018 22:01

Just watched the latest episode - then signed this!!

Yes riversleep by the programme or the company that produce them do you think?

Helena I was shocked about a junior\infant school I taught supply in . They were punishing the children by keeping them in at playtimes. Shock I took a class for R.E. in the afternoon and the majority of them were uncontrollable (which is not usual for my classes Grin ) The TA came in to help and told me they had been kept in, at morning break , had a shortened lunch break and they don't HAVE afternoon breaks !!!!!! FGS. 7 year olds Shock

Thanks for that link Butterfly

I suspect Krispy Kreme and other food manufacturers have done a shitload of research into the cheapest and most addictive proportions of sugar and fat.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 11/05/2018 22:58

Just watched it

Loved Ross Noble being patronised by Hugh, Ross took it quite well

And Hugh hugging the bus driver over and over, and going for a pint with him

It is almost a class comedyGrin

HFW is a nice bloke, but he is sooo patronising Grin

It was me who said about the multipacks of chocolate. Currently at one supermarket 7 packs are £1.75. I get that that is a bargain and people would obviously always rather save money where they can, me included. But, and maybe this is just me personally, I would eat a snickers/mars/whatever once in a blue moon but I would resent the expense of a single bar compared to the very cheap price of a multipack so would maybe choose the multipack. Then I’d have 7 bars in the house, I’m not pig enough to eat them all in one go but once they’re in the house, even if I had one a week, over that 7 weeks I’d have eaten 7 chocolate bars I wouldn’t have otherwise eaten. Probably not a massive deal but there are so many crazy offers like that on crap food and some people would just go through them. I see the same people buying stuff like that at my work every single week.

Sorry if that makes no sense, dp has the tv on and it’s loud and distracting.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 12/05/2018 07:10

£1.75 = 25p per chocolate bar.

In Aldi you can get a banana for 13p.

Not easy I know but there are healthy cheap options too.

I think that food education in schools needs to change too, my daughter was taught to make a bolognaise, the ingredients to take in were mince,an onion, and a jar of sauce, not exactly cooking skills? I think teachers should get children to try to source the cheapest fresh foods and then all learn how to make meals out of them from scratch, no-one seems to know how to cook anymore. We never had any money growing up, my Mum used to make everything as cheaply as possible to fill us, thankfully we never went hungry, we always had a plate of bread on the table too, but we also never really snacked either, it seems to be that children have free range to access the cupboard for crisps, biscuits, fizzy drinks etc, we were never allowed to do that, having said that, they weren't so freely available , we had sweets as a treat at the weekend. Don't get me wrong I love a bit of junk food, but know if I eat it all the time I put on weight so quickly. Re. the question of cost I bought a small chicken for £2.25 at Aldi, it did 2 of us for a roast dinner, chicken sandwiches for two days for school and tonight it will be coronation chicken for dinner, scraps for the cats , no waste at all. I know most children aren't very keen on veg and fruit, but the more it becomes a norm, the easier it is.
