First of all, I love Hugh, we've watched him from the start of River Cottage. Second I think a programme on obesity & raising awareness etc is a good thing.

However AIBU to feel like we've seen it all before? I'm sure I've watched almost exactly that programme with Jamie & Tom Kerridge & probably someone else too?

I think that food education in schools needs to change too, my daughter was taught to make a bolognaise, the ingredients to take in were mince,an onion, and a jar of sauce, not exactly cooking skills? I think teachers should get children to try to source the cheapest fresh foods and then all learn how to make meals out of them from scratch, no-one seems to know how to cook anymore. We never had any money growing up, my Mum used to make everything as cheaply as possible to fill us, thankfully we never went hungry, we always had a plate of bread on the table too, but we also never really snacked either, it seems to be that children have free range to access the cupboard for crisps, biscuits, fizzy drinks etc, we were never allowed to do that, having said that, they weren't so freely available , we had sweets as a treat at the weekend. Don't get me wrong I love a bit of junk food, but know if I eat it all the time I put on weight so quickly. Re. the question of cost I bought a small chicken for £2.25 at Aldi, it did 2 of us for a roast dinner, chicken sandwiches for two days for school and tonight it will be coronation chicken for dinner, scraps for the cats , no waste at all. I know most children aren't very keen on veg and fruit, but the more it becomes a norm, the easier it is.

£1.75 = 25p per chocolate bar.

In Aldi you can get a banana for 13p.

Not easy I know but there are healthy cheap options too.

It was me who said about the multipacks of chocolate. Currently at one supermarket 7 packs are £1.75. I get that that is a bargain and people would obviously always rather save money where they can, me included. But, and maybe this is just me personally, I would eat a snickers/mars/whatever once in a blue moon but I would resent the expense of a single bar compared to the very cheap price of a multipack so would maybe choose the multipack. Then I’d have 7 bars in the house, I’m not pig enough to eat them all in one go but once they’re in the house, even if I had one a week, over that 7 weeks I’d have eaten 7 chocolate bars I wouldn’t have otherwise eaten. Probably not a massive deal but there are so many crazy offers like that on crap food and some people would just go through them. I see the same people buying stuff like that at my work every single week.

Sorry if that makes no sense, dp has the tv on and it’s loud and distracting.

And Hugh hugging the bus driver over and over, and going for a pint with him

It is almost a class comedyGrin

I suspect Krispy Kreme and other food manufacturers have done a shitload of research into the cheapest and most addictive proportions of sugar and fat.

Yes riversleep by the programme or the company that produce them do you think?

Helena I was shocked about a junior\infant school I taught supply in . They were punishing the children by keeping them in at playtimes. Shock I took a class for R.E. in the afternoon and the majority of them were uncontrollable (which is not usual for my classes Grin ) The TA came in to help and told me they had been kept in, at morning break , had a shortened lunch break and they don't HAVE afternoon breaks !!!!!! FGS. 7 year olds Shock

ppeat Apparently by far the most popular Krispy Kreme doughnut is the glazed ring. It has exactly 50% proportions of fat and carbs! That must have been researched!

Have a think about it. This problem is multi faceted. We have to look at ALL the changes that have occured in the past 30 to 40 years.

Mars bars are bloody rank.

Report
ppeatfruit · 10/05/2018 19:50

The real problem with things like Mars Bars ( and all high sugar\ chemically sweetened drinks and foods) is the amount of sugar they contain which, once your body gets used to it, means you're more likely to become addicted to those foods, therefore you're on the slippery path to obesity and diabetes type 2. There was an interesting programme about sugar and fat , it said that the foods containing 50% of each are the most addictive of all!

I can't see the problem with buying a fourpack of mars bars. I just did today. Does not mean I have to eat them all.

I like having them in the house for when the kids or I DO want one.

Who the flip eats 4 mars bars in one sitting? Don't think I know anyone who would. Not even my teenage boys....

Not yet seen episode 3. Was shocked by statistic of number of takeaways people are eating in an earlier episode.
I think it’s good he is focusing a lot on the environment we live in and how that encourages excess consumption.

To the PP who asked who pays 60p for a chocolate bar when they are 4 for £1 in the supermarket - I do. It is a conscious decision not to have chocolate in the house (except very dark for cooking) as I know it will get eaten. I can and still do buy bars from the vending machine at work or when I’m in WHSmith buying something else but it’s a conscious decision rather than just eating what’s lying around and is maybe once a week / fortnight.

To be fair where else could they send them?

Report
HelenaDove · 10/05/2018 00:45

I question the ethics of sending ppl to Slimming World or Weight Watchers though. They rely on repeat custom

My parents owned a shop years ago so I knew about the come fridges. I did find it interesting. I was glad he was badgering government and big business all the way through. Julie was good at putting her point across but every time they showed her, she had one of those massive milkshakes in her hand. Where I live, they cost about £4, never mind the calories. I'd never buy one due to the cost! I liked that he demonstrated little things like putting the steps in the tube station and the scales in the doctors surgery.

Cherrypi · 09/05/2018 22:06

The only new thing I learnt was that coke paid for the fridges and dictated drinks content and position. It did remind me a lot of the breastfeeding/ formula marketing debate.

Ive really enjoyed the series. Agree
Nothing new but the slant that’s its
Big business problem was different. I liked way it makes it obvious that small changes can make a difference. Not just fat coke to diet but things like beans or kechtup andhow much sugar in fruit juices. As well as a bottle of take away organge juice you may et on a healthy meal deal is 3-4 times size of a portion you should be having.
