I’m a bit of a TV Luddite. I can get to grips with Sky Plus but I’m new to all this streaming
We have Amazon Prime because of the delivery and have got Netflix because of Lemony Snicket.

DS is doing A level French so thought there may be something out there to interest him?...

Spiral is one of our favourites... gritty French police series.

Destinysdaughter · 09/04/2018 09:37

On Walter Presents ( C4) there is a funny comedy called Kabul Kitchen. It's set in Afganistan and is about a Frenchman who is trying to run a restaurant. I really enjoyed it and it's all in French!

flissfloss65 · 09/04/2018 09:40

The Bureau was really enjoyable. About a spy in the French Intelligence Service.

It’s on Amazon and there are three series.

La Mante on Netflix

The frozen dead on Netflix.
Also you can many UK programmes like The Crown in French, you just have to change the settings.
It's worth putting the French subtitles on as well if you are learning.

arielmanto · 09/04/2018 09:45

Witnesses was fantastic (noir style detective series)

CatelynStark · 09/04/2018 09:46

Black Spot on Prime is really good.

SnowOnTheSeine · 09/04/2018 09:46

No idea if it's available but "SODA" with Kev Adams is a funny teenager sketch show

glitterbiscuits · 09/04/2018 10:39

Thanks so much. I had no idea there would be so much.

Another vote for "La Mante" on Netflix. Great series, very dark.

Swallowedbyasnake · 09/04/2018 10:47

Call my Agent on Netflix is also great, really funny

boxyfingo · 09/04/2018 11:56

I would also recommend Walter Presents on All 4. Resistance, about WW11, is on there and is pretty good and fairly easy to follow.
I find a lot of thrillers/detective shows quite hard to understand without subtitles as they speak so fast and use lots of slang whereas period films tend to use more the standard of French that is taught at A level.

DGRossetti · 10/04/2018 09:58

I think "The returned" (originally Les revenants) is on NetFlix...

Unihorn · 10/04/2018 10:01

When I was studying for A Levels I used to stick subtitles on films I'd seen a couple of times to learn new vocab. Netflix has subtitles and audio available in French for a huge amount of shows so definitely look into that as well.

Allthebestnamesareused · 10/04/2018 10:04

Spiral (as mentioned above)

Also Spin (political thriller)

glitterbiscuits · 10/04/2018 10:42

Thanks everyone. DS knows all about the power of Mumsnet!
This way he can be revising without trying too hard

"Call my agent" as mentioned above is brilliant.

SnowOnTheSeine · 10/04/2018 12:54

It's not so fun as watching other stuff, but get him to watch 10 or 15 minutes of the news (you can watch TF1 etc. on replay on the internet).

The French they speak is very clear and no slang and if he has an idea of what is going on in the world anyway, that will help. I did French at uni and in the first year we had to watch and transcribe the news. I wouldn't recommend the transcribing (boring!) but watching it is good.

Andylion · 20/04/2018 21:51

Third vote for Call My Agent.

skippy67 · 22/04/2018 21:50

The Chalet

PetulantPolecat · 30/04/2018 21:58

Les Beaux Malaises is very funny.

Here’s a YouTube of his version of Peppa Pig’s Daddy Pig hanging up a family picture

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 08/05/2018 09:15

I liked Les Revenants (not so much the second series, but first was good), Spiral and The Chalet.

midsomermurderess · 10/05/2018 20:58

Dead Beautiful on All4. It even has Thierry Goddard (Gilou) from Spiral in it. It's a Paris-based crime series.

Pollaidh · 10/05/2018 21:10

The Bureau is absolutely brilliant. They're got the first 2 seasons on Prime (and we've now got the French DVD of season 3). If he liked The Night Manager, it's similar in terms of tension - all about the French security services. Very well written, cleverly done and utterly gripping. Also quite complicated so I watch with subtitles even though I speak fluent French, or I'd probably be lost.
