I’ve just heard that this will start in the US at the end of this month but Channel 4 haven’t said when they’ll start showing it yet.

I hear you Zibbidoo it’s impossible. My DH is a pretty savvy bloke with next to none patriarchal values but it just goes to show how ingrained it is, that he didn’t even realise how bad it can be and what it actually means.

I’ve read we’ll see more of Aunt Lydia’s backstory which I’m looking forward to.

honeysucklejasmine · 20/05/2018 22:46

I wasn't too worried at the beginning - as if Gilead would kill that many fertile women. But the natural progression to that would be "but they might wish they had", and sure enough...

I suppose there might be some hope, or I think more of them would have killed themselves.

Hobbes8 · 20/05/2018 22:46

Diddimus I work 4 days per week and my husband doesn't work. I was leaving the office one night at 6-ish and someone said to me "you must never see your kids". it's these tiny comments that chip away at our attempts at equality every day.

theredjellybean I read the book in the sixth form in the mid-90s. I loved it but it felt so far removed from our reality. I re read it before series 1, aged 40, with young kids and having worked for a while on contraception and abortion policy and I found it terrifying!

madeyemoodysmum · 20/05/2018 22:48

I thought the doctors but was extremely chilling too and so close to reality.

Our parent power is eroded more and more

Fines for school missed
Sweeteners now stuffed into fizzy drinks without public consent
Employees harassed for time off for sickness of themselves and children
Zero hour contracts
And on and on

And we put up with this???

BeyondPink · 20/05/2018 22:52

That was brilliant, and though I need to know what happens next, I think I will again need the whole week to get up to the next episode.

Gun, she really should have heated the scissors in the fire...

PleaseAndThanks · 20/05/2018 22:52

Can anyone recommend any similar books? I’ve read the article on the last page and it talks about a lot of books from the same genre- has anyone read anything they enjoyed?

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 20/05/2018 22:54

Exactly made. And it happens so very slightly that we don’t even notice. One new rule here, another new protocol there.

BeyondPink · 20/05/2018 22:54

Iirc I remember reading June's awesome mum will be in this season

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 20/05/2018 23:01

I loved it... but wouldn’t they have tracked her ear tag straight away and followed the van?

BeyondPink · 20/05/2018 23:04

I think it's more of a shoplifting alarm than a tracker?

boatyardblues · 20/05/2018 23:06

I was pondering whether an intravaginal wand was necessary for an early scan (never had one), as that seemed like another assault where June’s consent was immaterial.

Dancingmonkey87 · 20/05/2018 23:07

I don’t think it’s a tracker but a tag like what the nazi did to the Jews to mark them for the camps. The tag on June’s ear would locate her to her which post she belongs at.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 20/05/2018 23:07

I have had an early scan and it was too early for a normal ultrasound. They did try it first though.

Eastcoastmost · 20/05/2018 23:07

Wish the UK would show this at the same time as the US! I’m a few episodes ahead watching it on Hulu stateside!

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 20/05/2018 23:07

I think that was the point boatyard. Having said that I know for very early pregnancy an internal scan is sometimes better.

CruCru · 20/05/2018 23:08

boatyardblues They used an intravaginal wand with me while I was having IVF - during the process (to see whether I had follicles etc) and once it had been successful (to see if there was actually anything there - the scanner on the stomach wouldn’t pick anything up at five weeks I think).

UrsulaPandress · 20/05/2018 23:14

Well that was a hard watch.

DiddimusStench · 20/05/2018 23:14

boaty to see the baby in the sac (which is what they stated they saw) at 5 weeks gestation they would have had to use a transvaginal scan. With an ordinary US you’d perhaps see a tiny sac but nothing else. But I think you’re right also.

Peachsnowpop · 20/05/2018 23:15

Fantastic opening to season 2. But ! What is gonna happen when she meets her hubby (which I'm certain she eventually will do) and she's also in a relationship with Nick ...

Peachsnowpop · 20/05/2018 23:16

Oh and I hate aunt lydia beyond belief. Evil twisted fuck, I hope someone kills her brutally

BeyondPink · 20/05/2018 23:18

You would need a TV scan to see anything at five weeks, however in June's case, did they need to see it that early at all...

CruCru · 20/05/2018 23:19

Ah you see, I think Aunt Lydia is a true believer. She genuinely thinks she is doing the right thing and is looking after the Handmaids.

OP posts:
ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 20/05/2018 23:22

I’m not convinced. I think Aunt Lydia knows how to play the game for survival. Perhaps she has gotten to the point where she has just started to believe everything she was pedalling. Maybe that was what she had to do in order to be able to do her job properly.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 20/05/2018 23:25

Anyone of the handmaids can be pregnant at any time and not know.. you think they’d treat them anazingly if fertility is so precious.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 20/05/2018 23:28

That’s what i was thinking too Mary. When they were out in the rain and then she suddenly swept June away for dry clothes and food I thought, but surely they should all be getting properly nourished and a stress free environment that didn’t involve stress positions! Because that’s how to make the best environment for pregnancy!
